Guest OraleHolmes Report post Posted June 4, 2004 is the six sided ring the only ring they're gonna use?
Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2004 Watching it right now. First match just ended and they're playing that "JEFF JARETT HAS BECOME KING OF THE OFFICE" ad. Six sided ring is alright. I think it makes the show look less like a low-rent SmackDown, which is good. I don't like the clock and text at the top (and sometimes bottom) of the screen, though, because it's distracting. I have a widescreen TV and can just crop that stuff out by blowing up the image to fill the screen, but still...
Guest Evolution Report post Posted June 4, 2004 I liked it. I enjoyed the Jeff Jarrett promo, though, but that's because I'm a slight mark for JJ. Not too interested about him and the entire 3 Live Kru getting involved in a feud, however. The Truth/Jarrett is fine, but leave B.G. and Konnan out of it. The six-sided ring worked a lot better than most people were likely expecting, and it should be fun to see it every week. Hopefully the ratings are respectable for it so that Fox doesn't pull it. The opening match was a good introduction to fans who might not have seen TNA before or are wondering how the six-sided ring would work, Abyss/Shark Boy was a squash match to put Abyss over and that's fine with me, the tag title match was incredibly fast-paced and I was disappointed at its lenght, but you have to make time for other things, too. The main event also showcased the six-sided ring and the X Division, of course, and overall I can't really complain about the wrestling in this show--even Abyss/Shark Boy worked for what it was. Thumbs up for the show, though I'm not sold on buying the PPV, but I'll try to at least watch it for free somewhere.
Lightning Flik 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2004 Dammit... I want to see something different than WWE, but alas... I don't get Impact. From all the good things I'm hearing though right now, I'm kinda wishing I really could get this B-Show.
Guest OraleHolmes Report post Posted June 4, 2004 Knowing Vince McMahon, he'll make a HUGE announcment in the coming weeks and announce a new match concept that's never been done or seen before. It is the type of match that will revolutionize wrestling forever. It is a match so dynamic, so unique that it could've only came from the mind of Vince McMahon. It will debut for the first time LIVE on PPV at SummerSlam. It is called the "Hexagonal Havoc" match and consists of a 6 sided ring!
Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2004 (edited) Unfortunately, I wasn't able to see it today because Dish Network doesn't provide FSN (for some reason, I thought FOXWD was the same as FSN, but apparently it's Fox Sports WORLD because it had soccer on instead). Hopefully I can figure out some way to start seeing Impact regularly since Dish Network basically screwed me over. What Dish package do you have? Everything from America's Top 60 Plus and higher lets you choose at least one of the regional Fox Sports Net channels. EDIT: Nevermind, just read the rest of the thread. So far, Dallas has done three things: (1) Be tall (2) Flip his hair (3) Choke somebody out with his boot You know, when indie wrestlers are training to someday become Kevin Nash, I get afraid for the future. The Ill One 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2004 Well this was my first Indy show I've ever seen, period. I'm by no stretch of the imagination a picky fan so just seeing those cruiserweights hitting corkscrew moonsaults and flip-floppin' into different moves (even if it looks a bit sketchy) was insanely cool for me. I missed the main event with Styles, apparently, but I'll hopefully get to catch this. I'm impressed, to be honest, but I have never ordered PPVs so I don't think this will change that. Astro101 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2004 I dunno if anyone has an answer just yet, but I have a question. I've read from Keller's report that non title matches and title matches, if gone to a draw will have a judge decide a winner. Does that mean that titles can change hands on a draw based on the desicion of a judge?
Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted June 4, 2004 Yeah, they're going for the old school NWA approach to draws.
Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2004 Show just finished here. Seemed solid from start to finish, but I wouldn't order the PPV for two reasons: 1) I'm not interested enough in wrestling to spend money on it. 2) I have access to alt.binaries.pro-wrestling and could download it for free. When it comes to attracting the 'smart' internet crowd, I'm sure TNA will have no problem with #1, since most fans spend more on wrestling than I do, including the guys in the crowd where I saw a variety of masks, belts, etc. Not sure what they can do about #2 though. Guest JMA Report post Posted June 4, 2004 Did Test sell his '99 wrestling outfits to Dallas? They were eerily similar. Anyway, I really enjoyed the show. I've only seen one full TNA PPV and a handful of matches before. Like others have said, I thought the six-sided ring worked well. The Fox Box and the time-limit also made TNA look more "legit" IMO. My only complaint would be all the country music ads. The PPV pimping didn't really bother me because they should be promoting them heavily.
syxx2001 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2004 I still dont see the Kevin Nash resemblance. Test, yeah, but Kevin Nash. People are just nitpicking.
Guest Real F'n Show Report post Posted June 4, 2004 I just got off work and watched the show that I recorded, and I have to say, I was impressed. Cool opening video and highlights throughout the show made it seem really professional. I also like the bar at the top that shows the match time and who's wrestling, but I agree with whoever said that two bars can be distracting, I took a glance at what the bottom bar was saying and missed a cool move in the first match, but luckily I could just rewind the tape. Team Canada vs. Red, Sonjay, and Hector Garza was a good way to open the show and showed off some cool moves to first time viewers, Great match. Abyss vs. Shark Boy served it's purpose, to put Abyss over. I like Abyss alot more than Kane, mostly because of his cool moveset. Plus Popeye came out for Sharky after the match so it's all good. AMW vs. Dallas/Kid Kash was also a good match with a hot ending sequence. My only complaint is the match ended with a roll-up, but other than that, I'm happy AMW are tag champs again. I fast forwarded through the Dusty Rhodes/Jeff Jarrett stuff. Main Event was excellent. All 4 guys showed off some great moves, I liked Sabin's springboard tornado DDT, Elix's rope-walk rana to the outside, and Styles' insane somersault plancha the best. Really good match and a great way to introduce new fans to the X-Division. Overall, I think the show was awesome and will definately start taping it every week. I order PPV's occasionally, so this is also a good way for me to decide if I should order the PPV that Wednesday or not.
Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2004 Well, I'm not familiar with Kash but I know he's been around a while, but when they came out of the tunnel I immediately had flashbacks to Shawn and Kev, even if they weren't acting like it at all. That "big guy with long dark hair and small annoying guy with long dirty blonde hair" routine made it a little hard not to think about it, and I wasn't even watching the WWF back then and have only seen a few videos of that period. But as he started hair flipping, then the choking, then the boot-oriented offense, the whole Big Kev thing was like a prophecy fulfilled.
geniusMoment 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2004 The problem is the show was basically just an infomercial for their ppv. Even when ECW was giving away big matches with a much bigger fanbase in a better timeslot they did not draw. TNA needs to make this show feel like something special or it will fail. Except for Jarrett this show did not get anyones personality across.

Mecha Mummy 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2004 Now I really hope my VCR's working properly so I can see the show. I'm getting really excited to see this despite myself. Addendum: THE STUPID MOTHERFUCKING VCR DID NOT FUCKING WORK JESUS CHRIST.
Guest Ronixis Report post Posted June 5, 2004 Impact worked. Much better than the last 5 or so Smackdowns. It was NOT enough for me get the PPV on a weekly, but it was enough to get peoples heads turning. People in my school (Dont ask me how, we just did) saw it, they went nuts. They started asking questions, I did the best I could. . They have something here.
JustJoe2k5 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2004 The video packages were some of the most professional I've ever seen from TNA. The crowd seemed to be enjoying it and that definitely help me get into the show, and once the wrestlers get comfortable inside the six-sided ring we could see some really cool matches. I really hope this is a success and I will definitely be watching every Friday.
Guest TDinDC1112 Report post Posted June 5, 2004 1. If you have the DirecTV sports pack, you can watch the west coast Fox Sports channels and see the show at 6pm, like I did. 2. Who cares about country music ads? They should be happy to get any ads they can get. 3. People are complaining b/c it pimps the ppv? - That's the point! They need people to see the shows and they need to make them want to buy the ppv. 4. A few people on here said they've never seen TNA before, and won't buy a ppv for now, but they'll watch. TNA has succeeded there. They now need to keep having fun matches and do angles that will get you people to care so much that you will buy an occasional ppv. JJMc 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2004 I liked it. Great production quality, and that's basically all it takes. I kind of liked the Worldwidish lighting. It was nice instead of the WWF's WHAT WILL HAPPEN TONIGHT~!?! atmosphere.
TNABaddboi 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2004 The problem is the show was basically just an infomercial for their ppv. Even when ECW was giving away big matches with a much bigger fanbase in a better timeslot they did not draw. TNA needs to make this show feel like something special or it will fail. Except for Jarrett this show did not get anyones personality across. Xplosion is an infomercial for the PPV and this was definitely not Xplosion. This is basically what Heat was originally supposed to be when it was first added in 98. Shorter mid-card (and in this case X-Division) matches and the appearance and angles by the main eventers to get you to want to watch the main show (RAW in 98, the TNA PPV in this case). It's the only way they can have a success doing both Impact! and the PPV every week and for one week at least, I think TNA passed with flying colors. I'm sure they will pop a decent buyrate from people who just discovered AJ Styles and want to see if he's going to win the belt. And even though I like the 3 Live Krew characters should have been established more to accomplish what they wanted to accomplish with that segment, people may tune in to see if they interrupt Jarrett's "coronation." They probably won't convert many casual viewers into weekly buyers, but they could conceivable convert non-buyers in casual buyers if they hook them with Impact!. The show has to feature enough action to be deemed an event in itself and not just an infomercial, but ultimately, it exists solely to make you want to order a Wednesday show. As I said, TNA towed that line perfectly today and they can continue to do it, they may have a shot.
Guest Donners Report post Posted June 5, 2004 Sounds like one of the best possible shows they could have put on. They didn't overshadow regulars with "big names", they didn't waste time with debuts (which would have meant nothing to the many new fans who wouldn't realise that the new person wasn't part of TNA's roster) and they went some way to building up their top talents (Red, AMW, Styles, etc) for the new fans. Whether that translates into ratings and buys is another matter, but at least they've given it a good shot.
Silence 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2004 1. If you have the DirecTV sports pack, you can watch the west coast Fox Sports channels and see the show at 6pm, like I did. I would watch Impact on DirecTV if my dad still had an illegal DirecTV card that still works, but the guy who usually fixes his card, Rick, doesn't have a fix for it anymore and is trying to get a fix for the new illegal DirecTV cards. The thing about the Dish Network card my dad has currently is that there must be a certain process to get most of the channels seen on DirecTV onto the Dish Network card (which would obviously include the FSN channels) along with extra channels since my dad talked about it in the past, though the only Fox channels on the Dish card are FOXWD (Fox Sports World) and FOXMO (I guess it's a movie channel). The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2004 The show looked hella-slick. Of course most of that is just because I've been watching the same presentation every week for nearly 100 weeks now on ppv...but it fealt fresh. I thought it was a good first effort at making a TV show. If they want to focus on the X division and put it on TV for free...they'll get no complaints from me. Also...I liked the 6-sided ring. The performers didn't really do anything special with it...I just liked the way it filled the screen.
syxx2001 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2004 My cousin came downstairs and goes "Whats that? A hexagon ring? Why doesnt the WWE do that?" Its always a positive when #2 does something #1 doesnt do and people wonder why #2 did it first.
The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2004 I also wanted to say that I thought AJ Styles looked more like a star than I can really remember him looking like in TNA. Mostly because Shane, Sabin and Skipper didn't look in his league....which can be taken more as a negative... Anyway...Styles just looked like he belonged as the centerpiece of that show. Make it so! NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2004 ok I taped it and just got done watching it. First impressions: It was definately different from WWE, which is GREAT, no matter how you look at it, just for the fact that it is a true alternative. I do kind of get a WCW feel to it. Positives: X-divsion (duh) smaller ring Mike Tenay 1 hour of WRESTLING Different Wrestlers = Different styles Negatives: (Bear with me, because I am just basing this on today's one hour show) The whole country-redneck-southern niche has got to go, if they seriously want to make an impact on the national market. For the flashbacks, they need to show better stuff. Not celebrity stuff, because that doesn't make anyone care about the product. Jeff Jarret as the head booker. I really hope he has the "what's best for business in his mind" because if he is just booking himself as champ to try and show Vince he can carry a company, TNA won't last that long. Overall I would give the debut show a thumbs up. It definately established itself as a different product from WWE. While I didn't fall head over heels in love with NWA-TNA from what I have seen so far(tonight and past shows) it is definately something WORTH WATCHING. Lets hope they can keep the good stuff coming.
