The Convention

Recommended Posts

What do you expect the conservative pundits to do? Say how great the Convention is going?

I remember how Big Media tried to make Cheney's remarks back at the 2000 Convention as some vicious partisan attack when he said something like "Now it's time for the grown-ups to take charge." Not much news is made during these events, so I guess Big and Small Media have to grasp at straws. Hell, a certain cable news channel that really made me laugh out last last night was comparing Kerry's bio-weapon outfit to that of Dukakis driving the infamous tank back in '88.

And I'll give Novak props for being a bitter old man.

EDIT (I forgot about this until after hitting send the first time):

It's a pretty sad day when "shove it" is more offensive to the ears of neocons than "FUCK OFF!"

Or "girly man." Actually, I think one reason this is getting pimped more than it should was because Mrs. Horse Face had just given a speech on how politics needs to be more civil. Hell, she called some of the political discourse "un-American."

Oh, and I heard the NY Slimes reported that there will be so many vets at the D. Convention that one might mistake it for the GOP Convention. I guess this is the Dem's answer to the GOP and their use of black people in their convention...

I expect pundits to be fair and call a spade a spade... the convention last night was not this huge bush bashing party... the central themes, as pointed out in Clintons speech, are economy/healthcare/foreign policy/terrorism... and they're driving those points home. The criticism of Bush last night was fair and TYPICAL of a convention. So when I turn the television and hear some blowhard conservative pundit crying foul over nothing, I get extremely annoyed. They would have a fucking point if last night was nothing but mean spirited, Michael Moore/MoveOn.org style attacks.

And "Mrs. Horseface" was pissed that a reporter put words in her mouth... I'd have been pissed about it to. "Shove it" isn't exactly my idea of a news story. Now if she would've said "go to hell you son of a bitch asshole" then yeah, I think everyone would have a right to complain... but "shove it" ?! OH MY GOD! LOOSE CANNON! GET HER OUT OF THERE!

How do we know that the reporter did? Actually, the reporter was the editoral page editor of the most conservative newspaper this side of the Washington Times.

I agree with you that's it's not that big a news story -- it's just the setting in which it occurred that makes it funny as hell.

If you're looking to get in a pissing match regarding this topic, you need to try harder...

Didn't Mrs. Ketchup say something about "un-American" in her speech? How was the reporter putting words in her mouth in that case? (I don't know if she did or not... I actually haven't seen much of the news in the past day or two, but the blurb I caught seemed to indicate that she did.)

I didn't watch the convention, and I won't watch the GOP's dog-and-pony show, either. I don't expect the tone to be any different than what I've read of the Dems' so far, though I expect the same amount of bitching in the media, this time from the left.

I kept flipping back and forth between Fox and CNN after the Clinton speech, comparing what their respective pundits said. I mostly listened to Fox and was rather disappointed how one of them insisted the entire speech was a vicious partisan attack. Mountains out of mole hills, really.

I like Lewis Black's take on why the hell are there conventions in the first place? We know who the candidates are, so why have this big schmoz over it? Black insists that the balloon industry must have both parties by the balls with an iron clad contract or something.

Wha?!?!

I hate these conventions. Nothing but circle-jerks for the two respective parties.

Although I probably will turn in to see Arnold give a speech.

I heard most of the convention on Michael Savage's radio show last night. His running commentary was HILARIOUS. I was dying of laughter. If you can hear his show (6-9pm ET or 3-6 PST) do so.

The only good thing about the conventions thus far has been for talk radio fans, because a lot of the big names from both sides are all condensed into one building so you have everyone going on everyone's show to bitch, for example, Hannity was on Franken's show, the NAACP president was just on Larry Elder's show. Janeane Garafalo just had a showdown with Larry Elder on his show, and then he will be going on her show in about a half hour. It is just weird to hear some of these people on each other's show going to battle for their party lines....lol.

I dont remember seeing him speak before, but he's reminding me of one of those preachers on the Church channels, just by the way he looks.

O'Reilly vs. Moore will be interesting.

I'm sure you know how JFK spoke, right? Just imagine that only with some slurring and wheezing and you have Uncle Teddy.

Just watched The Factor on Fairandbalanced TV with the Moore vs O'Reilly Cage Match.

O'Reilly won. Moore had one good thing going where he compared Bush's "mistake" in the WMD info to the mistake of a guy running someone over in a car, and then asked O'Reilly if he would hold the driver responsible if he had hit O'Reilly's child. O'Reilly tried to say only if was intentional (his point was that Bush couldn't have lied because he didn't have the right info).

But then O'Reilly asked Moore how he'd remove dictators if not through force, and Moore said some bullshit about the people rising up, and the world rising up like in the case of South Africa (rrriiggghhttt).

The icing on the cake was O'Reilly's last word, after Moore had left, when he said that Moore was a 'blind ideologist'. When Bill O'Reilly is calling you a blind ideologist, you know you lost.

I disagree with you so hard. Moore's "hit by car" example was emotional treacle, and his notion of a people earning their own government rather than having it installed was his best-made point.

I don't know if either of them "won." I just wanted them to kiss a little.

I think it's funny (sad ?) that Ben Affleck come off looking smarter then Moore did.

Affleck could be a good Politician someday, he at least knows some shit.

This convention IS positive... especially if you've seen previous conventions

Last night was NOTHING compared to the venom we're going to see at the Republican convention.

Because, as we know, Republicans are just mean, ornery bastards.

My complaint is that conservative pundits are complaining... sometimes I get the impression that they expect the Democrats to hold hands with the Republicans and sing 'shining happy people'

You mean like the NAACP bitching that Bush won't speak to them after some of their comments over the past 4 years?

Did you miss his Eulogy Speech? 1980 Convention?

The man is a true icon of oration, regardlass of political viewpoint.

I don't like George Bush but that doesnt change the fact that his post-911 speech is among the greatest in the history of America.

Have you heard Teddy in the last 15 years? Less coherent than Bob Dylan.

Well, unlike Teddy, Bush hasn't directly led to the death of anybody. I suppose the sign of good liberalism is to allow a woman to drown to death in your car.

Moore said some pretty stupid things, but O'Reilly could've owned him a lot worse than he did.

Apparently Moore doesn't know what a lie is. O'Reilly explained to him why Bush had good reason to think there was WMD (about the british and russian intelligence telling him the same thing), and Moore just ignored it and kept coming back and saying he didn't tell the truth. That was funny.

lie v. lied, ly·ing, (lng) lies

v. intr.

1. To present false information with the intention of deceiving

Also I love Moore asking O'Reilly if he would sacrifice his children over and over, totally missing his point. It's their choice to sacrifice themselves, not their parents, and not Bush. The only sacrifices were made by the soldiers themselves. That line made no fucking sense. I'm surprised O'Reilly didn't tear him apart on that one.

Interestingly enough, just about every serviceman I've talked to has stated quite plainly that they're ready to head to Iraq, both at the outset and now. Now and then you have the exception, but not by and large.

Moore's comment doesn't really fit, despite him trying.

All I have to say is oh my god who's decision was it to let Theresa Heinz Kerry speak? She was supposed to speak about why Kerry would be a good president, and instead spoke all about herself. She made an incredibly stupid comment about the Peace Corps making the biggets sacrifices for our nation when soldiers are dying, and just a lot of other odd, off topic things about feminism, South African apartheid and how John Kerry will "step into the line of fire". WTF? They are lucky as hell they have someone as shrewed and capable as John Edwards speaking tommorow to cover up that disaster.

Okay, so did anyone see Obama speak?

Obama did very well, (Chris Rock: "He speaks so well!), but a lot of his content was empty rhetoric ala Clinton, but I must say I admire him for speaking out for the inner city to take responsibility for their education, by not allowing a black kid to be afraid to read a book because he'll be "called white". Very brave, especially after the heat Cosby has took for saying basically the same thing, and with Jesse Jackson in the audience. On the surface I liked him.

Ron Reagan was impressive too and got over a complicated issue in a simple, to the point way, and made a very convincing argument for stem cell research. It was absolutely eerie at times watching him how much his inflections and head movements exactly mimmicked that of his father's.

Even Dean seemed to be on his best behavior, YARRRGH!!!!

But Theresea Heinz Kerry...oh my. Chris Wallace on Fox after had me laughing by suggesting he was waiting for her to break out in "Don't Cry For Me Argentina". Trmendous, but almost eerie how much like Eva Perot she seemed to be...
