1234-5678 Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 For a story I am writing, I needed a list of "racially charged" movies, to mention, and for reference. The only ones I can think of are American History X, Higher Learning, and A Bronx Tale. What others (probably some really obvious ones) am I missing?
Guest Mindless_Aggression Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 Just find Spike Lee's library and go to town.
spiny norman Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 That's a bit of a vague title. If you mean movies about racism, none for me surpasses To Kill A Mockingbird.
1234-5678 Posted August 18, 2004 Author Report Posted August 18, 2004 Ok, let me amend. Movies where it pits one race against another, or more then that, and involving youth.
UseTheSledgehammerUh Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 Remember the Titans pits a high school football team of black & white dividied groups against each other, although more toned down.
Kardo Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 Romper Stomper. I live in Footscray where the movie takes place and when they beat up the two guys at the start at Footscray station I thought it was a bit weird considering there's no tunnel nor has ever been one at Footscray station.

Black Lushus Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 A Time To Kill, that's the one where the two KKK guys rape Samuel L. Jackson's daughter and then he kills them both and goes to trial for it...decent movie, nothing great though...good performance from Kevin Spacey in it... Let's see, what else....Mississippi Burning with Willem DaFoe and Gene Hackman, though that's not necessarily focused on youth....Rosewood with Ving Rhames and Jon Voight, kind of a silly movie but racially charged nonetheless...
Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 The Defiant Ones Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? The Adventures of Robin Hood ('40's) The last one is built around the Norman/Saxon conflict.
razazteca Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 Everything Melven & Mario Van Peebles did. Especially Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssssss Song.

It's worth it to see Sandra Bullock looking super hot, and for Matthew McConaughey's ridiculous overacting.
nl5xsk1 Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 Porky's 2: The Next Day Good call on the Porky's 2 ... such a classic trilogy. Wicked underrated. How about Birth of a Nation? It's only the most controversial movie about racism of all time.
Youth N Asia Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 In The Heat Of The Night Freakin' classic!
Angel_Grace_Blue Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 Sort of about race, and youth, but it was a TV movie, I'm talking about Crown Heights. Howie Mandel = best rabbi ever. Because he raps. Peace between the Jewish and black communities after the Crown Heights riots through that glorious thing known as hip-hop. I only saw part of it, though. But it had some rapping Hasidic Jewish kid, so, uh, yeah. I'll leave this thread now...
1234-5678 Posted August 18, 2004 Author Report Posted August 18, 2004 I don't see my story having much comedy in it.
Guest MikeSC Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 You could do "White Man's Burden". Not a good movie, mind you, but it seems to fit into your criteria. -=Mike
Guest Evolution Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 You could do "White Man's Burden". Not a good movie, mind you, but it seems to fit into your criteria. -=Mike Interesting concept, bad execution. I second Mississippi Burning and In The Heat of the Night as selections. I'm still looking for the In The Heat of the Night movie soundtrack so I can hear "Foul Owl on the Prowl" again.
Guest Retro Rob Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 I think Do the Right Thing is a great race-driven movie.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 Rob beat me to it. Do the Right Thing seems perfect for what you're after. Look at West Side Story too. There certainly isn't anything as heavy as Spike Lee in there, but it'd be fruitful to look at the broad strokes used to contrast different races in something as popular and consumable as the musical.
Anakin Flair Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 Mike beat me to it. Ok movie, not gret, though. To Kill a Mockingbird, or course.
Guest Crazy Dan Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 To Kill a Mockingbird In the Heat of the Night Do the Right Thing Cry Freedom (About So. Africa and Apartied, has Denzel Washington and William Hurt in it) A Dry White Season
Guest NaturalBornThriller4:20 Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 Do The Right Thing is the definition of a "Racially charged" movie. - American History X - Higher Learning - A Time To Kill Sort of about race, and youth, but it was a TV movie, I'm talking about Crown Heights. Howie Mandel = best rabbi ever. Because he raps. Peace between the Jewish and black communities after the Crown Heights riots through that glorious thing known as hip-hop. I didn't like the idea that it implies that every white person is rich and well off and every black person is dirt ass poor. Crackers are poor too.
Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 Do The Right Thing is the obvious answer. I guarantee no one else will be examining the complexities of the relationship between the Angelo-Saxons and their Norman lords.
Guest Evolution Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 You could do "White Man's Burden". I didn't like the idea that it implies that every white person is rich and well off and every black person is dirt ass poor. Crackers are poor too. That would be the part that I would classify as the bad execution. I know they were trying to establish the role reversal, but they should've kept it somewhat realistic and had some poor black people representing poor white people. Then again, they didn't set it in the South. *rimshot*
Ravenbomb Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 not sure if some of these count, but Do The Right Thing American History X Schindler's List Taxi Driver (has some racist stuff in it) 12 Angry Men (again, some racist stuff)
