haVoc 0 Report post Posted August 19, 2004 Has anyone seen Metallica recently? Radio is dropping hints that they will be coming here for the first time in years and I'm thinking about going. I haven't seen them since '91/92 (Black Album) and was wondering if they're still worth seeing? Plus, they're still touring with Godsmack, right?
jimmy no nose 0 Report post Posted August 19, 2004 I haven't actually been to the concert, but I have seen video, heard audio, and read the setlists. Their playing and stage presense is as good as it has ever been. The sets usually consist of 2 songs from St. Anger then all old stuff. I think Fuel is the only song from Load or Reload that is played often. They have been busting out some more rare stuff recently too. I think it's well worth going to see them still. I will soon be buying tickets for the Pittsburgh show coming up next month. First time they've been here in 6 years. Godsmack are still on the tour. I hate them. I'll probably show up when they're almost done playing.

They pretty much kick 30 different kinds of ass. They only play 2 songs from St. Anger and then they play all the good old ones.
Robert 0 Report post Posted August 19, 2004 I'm going to see them tomorrow at the Bradley Center.
Guest PlatinumBoy Report post Posted August 19, 2004 I saw them last Summer, and they still put on a great show live. And they only do play 2 songs from St. Anger (St. Anger and Frantic for us), plus they gave 3 encores when I saw them which was fairly cool. So I'd say if you like the old stuff, go--because thats what they still play--and play it well.
LatinAssasin 0 Report post Posted August 19, 2004 I saw them last summer too and they really rocked it. Like everyone's said, they've been busting out more of their classic stuff, even Dyers Eve which they've never played live before. I wish I could see them again this year, but I'm way low on cash. So if you have the money, then yes, go.
caboose 0 Report post Posted August 20, 2004 I saw them on my birthday last year, and they still had it. Earlier I'd read somehwere that some shitty emo band had played beneath them at a festival and the Emo band claimed Metallica had forgotten how to play the classics. Absolute rubbish. Master of Puppets, Welcome Home, Sandman, One, Seek & Destroy, Four Horseman and Nothing Else Matters were all faultless. They were absolutely amazing. skullman80 0 Report post Posted August 20, 2004 I got my tickets through the Metclub for the Pittsburgh show next month...first time they have hit Pittsburgh since 97 or so. I havent been this excited in a long time, I've heard some boots from the tour..and they still bring it live, I am a bit biased though as Metallica is my favorite band, even after releasing St. Anger. If I hear Harvester of Sorrow live my life will be complete...
Styles 0 Report post Posted August 20, 2004 Going to DC on October 17 and Phillie on October 19. Saw them last year, and say what you want about their recent albums, they still kick amazing ass live. Best live band you can see. Period.
Guest Mindless_Aggression Report post Posted August 20, 2004 Never quite got why Metallica was considered a sure fire great live band, then again, same with Kiss. People standing there never did much for me, although they were technically precise and all. The new bassists seems to inject some actual energy into the set at least. He moves and everything. Corey_Lazarus 0 Report post Posted August 20, 2004 It's just the overall aura of seeing them live. That's why they did so well before they got radio and video exposure: the live shows. They just bring this overall energy while playing that you wouldn't be able to understand unless you actually see them live. Ditto for Slayer (live footage of them makes it out to seem like the only one doing anything is Tom during the intro to "Hell Awaits," when he stands at the foot of the stage, but they're SICK live). NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted August 20, 2004 I refuse to support metallica. I don't care if they perform their old shit or not. There are plenty of other bands I can see that are still putting out good music that I can spend my money on.
Use Your Illusion 0 Report post Posted August 20, 2004 Go to the concert. You won't be disappointed.

Its just the stage presence. Have you ever been to a Met concert? They demand your attention and are just so precise and powerful live, its a really amazing thing to see. I like pits as much as the next guy, but Metallica isnt about that, just banging your head and singing along...
mw679 0 Report post Posted August 21, 2004 Its just the stage presence. Have you ever been to a Met concert? They demand your attention and are just so precise and powerful live, its a really amazing thing to see. So true. I saw them in 2000 on my 21st b-day, at Foxboro stadium. I'm not sure how many people were actually there but the stands were full, as well as the field portion, and I overheard some people talking about how when Metallica hits the stage that the whole field would be like a giant moshpit. Wrong. When Metallica came out everyone stood up and just watched, like, you just to be there and feel the energy that they bring, it really is awesome to hear 65,000 people screaming "DIE!!!" to Creeping Death. Oh, also got my tix for the Fleetcenter show in October, I hope they bust out something rare, I heard they have been practicing Trapped Under Ice..... Corey_Lazarus 0 Report post Posted August 21, 2004 I would see 'em if I didn't hate Godsmack, and if there was a promise that they'd play "Four Horsemen" and "Dyers Eve." I was actually surprised they busted out "No Remorse" at Summer Sanitarium '03. Even more surprised they didn't play "Horsemen," since that's the best song off Kill 'Em All (that and "Motörbreath," IMO).
Guest Mindless_Aggression Report post Posted August 21, 2004 I have actually seen them live, on the original Summer Sanitarium tour. Jason Newsted was pretty much the only one with any genuine passion, but I became pretty jaded with guys making "metal" faces while playing their guitars. Very precise though, can't fault them that, just fairly cheesy in that Hettfield just can't help making some of the goofiest faces on the planet while still standing in one spot. Not saying they're bad, just very overrated IMO. But it was better than Korn.
Zetterberg is God 0 Report post Posted August 22, 2004 I would see 'em if I didn't hate Godsmack, and if there was a promise that they'd play "Four Horsemen" and "Dyers Eve." At one of the Calgary shows this year, they did just that. It was awesome. It was only like the third time ever that Dyers Eve was played in its entirety. skullman80 0 Report post Posted August 22, 2004 They have been playing almost all old stuff this tour. Only St Anger and Frantic off of St. Anger, and Fuel off the Load's...other than that its all Black Album and earlier..which always shapes up to be a good list. I wish they would only play stuff from Kill Em All to Justice..but they have to throw in other stuff...but the setlists I have been seeing, some with Leper Messiah, and Disposable Heroes, and Dyers Eve...makes me very happy... NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted August 23, 2004 Seriously though, James Hetfield is one of the most overrated frontman ever. I just can't stand the way he modifies the notes for certain songs so he can execute it live. It sounds like trash. If you can't execute certain singing/screaming LIVE, then don't sugercoat it on an album......(not like this ONLY applies to Hetfield, but just saying since it is a metallica thread).... Yeah, totally agree. The times I've seen them, it wasn't even close vocally. But hey, he sure did stand there and look agitated really well. Feh.
Slickster 0 Report post Posted August 23, 2004 I hope they bust out something rare, I heard they have been practicing Trapped Under Ice..... My God, if they played that live that would be SICK. They haven't done that one live in at least 10 years.

DMann2003 0 Report post Posted August 24, 2004 I heard Hetfield just can't DO that kind of singing anymore. His vocal chords have changed? Years of heavy drinking and screaming at that level for 20+ years will have that kind of effect on a voice. Look at what drugs/smoking did to Steven Tyler and Al Pacino's voices. DMann2003 0 Report post Posted August 24, 2004 Think about it, who here thinks they could do Ride the Lightning when they're 40?
Corey_Lazarus 0 Report post Posted August 24, 2004 If Lemmy can do "Ace of Spades" when he's in his 60's/70's, then Metallica can do "Ride the Lightning" in their's 40's.
Red Baron 0 Report post Posted August 24, 2004 and Bruce can do Run to the Hills and Hallowed Be Thy Name, and he's in his 40's
Guest GreatOne Report post Posted August 25, 2004 For me, if they play ALL old stuff, I'm talking even minimum Black Album fuck Load, Reload, and St Anger, and they play them TRUE (as opposed to say speeding Creeping Death up to where it sounds like a really fast pop song or NO REMORSE BABAY!!!!) I'm up for it. Sadly in '97 this was not the case. Then again I realize these are mostly 40 year old businessmen and to expect them to put out a Puppets-era show (my first concert ever in '86) is as likely as the RAW divas busting out a ***** match, so I have no interest.
