How important is your city?

Recommended Posts

It was stated (However this could be horribly wrong) in the book Microserfs that you could determine how important your city was 'circa 1950s' based solely upon area code. Simply add up the numbers (A zero counts as ten) to see how you stack up. The basis for this is that NYC has the lowest area code (212), and that was easiest to dial on a rotary phone. LA with 213 follows, so we know that those cities are important, but what of others?

I've gone from 915 (El Paso, TX), a 15, to 601 (Petal, MS), a 17, to now 334 (Auburn, AL), a 10. I guess I'm doing well.

That's the thing, Norman, I'm not sure how things go for non-US cities, as that wasn't addressed in the book...but from the looks of it, I guess it applies. We just need some British and Canadians to reply and see what kind of numbers they've got.

Baton Rouge (formerly 504) to Hattiesburg, MS (601), back to Baton Rouge (now 225)

That's 19 (5+10+4) to 17 (6+10+1) to 9 (2+2+5)

(The (504) to (225) changeover happened around the same time I left for college.)

I started in 708 (15) but they re-divided the suburbs so I fell under 847 (19) then. When I moved to 414 (9) that soon changed to 262 (10). Now I'm in 815 (14).

It's a junk theory because they've added new area codes, and if it was based on importance, every area I was in would be 111. Ohhhhhh yeah.

Ottawa.  613=10, which is lower than Toronto (416=11) and the GTA (905=14).

Don't front on the 905. We hold it down f'real.

Bout!

9 + 0(10) + 5 = 24

My cellphone is 647.. which is 17.

905 For me.

Stupid Toronto and Ottawa, they have "better numbers", but down in the Niagara Penninsula, we've got great wine, and a canal, and Niagara Falls, and great strip clubs.
