THE OFFSPRING AT THEIR GREATEST!

THE OFFSPRING are to release their greatest hits album in early 2005 - and it will feature new material.

The US punks, who played the Main Stage at this year’s Carling Weekend: Reading And Leeds Festivals, say that the album will also include a cover of a Police track. Frontman Dexter Holland won't divulge which one, though admits whether he can reach Sting’s high notes has played a part in choosing which one.

"I've been messing around with it in the car, like, 'Can I hit that?'" he says. "We're not doing 'Roxanne’. That's really up there."

The album will feature band classics such as ’Self Esteem’ and UK Number One hit ‘Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)’ as well as the new tracks recorded this summer with Morrissey producer Jerry Finn.

"I've gone back and forth about it," said Holland, "and just decided that, unfortunately, the way the world works now, if you really want to get people to hear about a greatest hits record, you need that new song.

"People think of greatest hits like, 'Oh, does that mean you're going into acting?'" Holland continued. "But I really want to put out another record next year. All the new songs feel pretty good," he explained to Rolling Stone.

Holland also revealed the band’s plans to join next year's Warped Tour.

"We've never done it, and I think it would be fun," Holland says, reminiscing about Warped shows they've attended. "We've run across everybody over the years, and I would be like, 'Oh! There's NOFX! There's Rancid. It's like a big bro-fest."

Huh? I never heard that. Whenever I get a "greatest hits" album it's to hear the most popular collection of song from a group that has released a buttload of albums.

And I agree Rando's post -- how do we know that new song or two will be a GREAT HIT?...

No Doubt released their Greatest Hits with a cover of "It's My Life" by Talk Talk.

The single and the album both did very well.

REM had "Bad Day" on their Best of album and it belonged, but under most circumstance, I think its a bad idea. And Offspring is no REM

It worked for Micheal Jackson when he did SCREAM on the HIStory album.

i wouldn't really say that "scream" got people to buy a greatest hits album, because 'history' wasn't really a greatest hits album, it was a hybrid: one disc of past hits, one disc of new material.

Offspring's greatest hits will NEED new material on it. I mean...these are the songs I can think of, off the top of my head, that would be on it:

"Gotta Get Away"

"Come Out And Play"

"Self Esteem"

"Gone Away"

"Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)"

"Go Get A Job"

"The Kids Aren't Alright" (best post-Smash Offspring songs, hands-down)

"Original Prankster"

"Hit That"

9 songs. Now, if these were 10-15 minute epics, yeah, it'd work. But these are 3 minutes and 30 seconds punk tunes. We're looking at perhaps 30 minutes worth of an album, and any greatest hits record should be damn near an hour.

That song "Gotta Get Away" is the perfect description of tripping off dextromethorphan. A seventh-grade buzzer pasttime, coincidentally the age at which I bought Smash.

I'd say "Want You Bad" was their lowest point, the lyrics are just really poor.

Cause Offspring has always been known for their lyrical brilliance.

"You can do it!

Until the break of dawn

Life, Life, Cannot go by the letter

Time, Time, Prozac can make it better

Noise, Noise, any kind will do

Can you feel it slip away, well it's all on you

Hey!

Crime, crime, rockin like Janet Reno

Time, Time, 18 and life in Chino

Freud, Freud, all alone it true

Well you see the coming day catches up to you, yeah

CHORUS:

Knock down the walls

It's alive in you

Knock down the place

You're alone it's true

Knock down the walls

It's alive in you

You're gonna keep your head up through it all

You're gonna bust out on it

Original Prankster

Break out, yeah

Original, yeah

Bust out on it

Original Prankster

You'll never stop now, stop now, that's what the main man say

You can do it!

You know it smells like shit, goddamn

Tag team, the double header

Son of Sam, fire always makes it better

Navigate, with style and aplomb

Cause wherever you are at that's the trip you on!

Hey!

Hey!

Lies, lies, says he down in the Bahamas

Tries, tries, bangin little hoochy mammas

No way, none of this is true

Well you see the coming day when the joke's on you, yeah

Hey!

CHORUS

Hey!

You can do it!

Time, time, so good to see ya

Nein, nein, don't wanna be ya

Dime, dime, so good to see ya

Nein, nein, don't wanna be ya

Crime, crime, fine sensimilla

Crime, crime, fine sensimilla

Crime, crime, fine sensimilla

When you see the coming day catches up to you, yeah

CHORUS

You'll never stop now, stop now, stop now, stop now, that's what the main man say"

Man I fuckin hate them.
