Worst ending to a PPV?

Recommended Posts

What is the worst ending to a PPV. Could be an anti-climax, a bad main event, or a dodgy angle. What are you personal 'most hated'?

For me, I'm going with Summerslam 93. Maybe it's because I'm not American, so I could never really get into the Mr USA gimmick Lex Luger had going, but this ending was a massive letdown for me. All the hype, and he wins by count-out. And then celebrates (with half the roster) at winning, but not winning the title.

Undertaker vs Underfaker from the following years SS, deserves a mention as well. From a storyline point of view, I guess it had to go on last, but I would have preferred the Bret/Owen cage classic to end the show, even with the post-match beatdown.

I'd say that the Heidenreich-Undertaker angle from No Mercy last week qualifies. The match wasn't that good to begin with, but the whole car crash angle was a downer on the entire show.

I was pretty disappointed with HHH retaining at WM 2000, but in hindsight, it wasn't that bad. It made for a better storyline with Rock needing Austin's help at Backlash to beat HHH and the Faction.

And Undertaker vs. Undertaker was definitely a BAD way to close Summerslam, especially after such a great Bret-Owen match.

Triple H's win at Wrestlemania 20 was the most shell-shocking thing I've ever experienced as a wrestling fan. Though it was the smartest move to do because it got a HUGE buyrate the next month, I couldn't except it. Even if I was a Triple H mark back then.

The Summerslam 93 stuff was just ridiculous. "Yeah! He beat him by count out! YEAH!!!!"

IYH#4 had the bad Diesel/Bulldog match with a DQ finish the fans shit all over.

I am one of the few that like Wrestlemania 9, but the end sucks, I have to agree.

King of the Ring 1994 is a good show that ends with a horrible Lawler vs. Piper match. Ugggh.

I'm sure there's a lot of WCW stuff I'm forgetting too.

I think you mean Wrestlemania 2000. :)

Judgment Day 1998, what a bunch of crockshit that was.

I guess Starrcade 1999 would be on the list too.

Jarrett defeats Raven after kicking out of the DDT twice. Easily the moment TNA started to downfall for everyone who was starting to pay attention.

Raven chases and chases and chases and then loses to the weakest Stroke ever delivered.

ANY ppv with a main event dq/countout/non-finish. Fans pay to see feuds settled, not hyped as if it were just another Raw or SD. Unforgiven 02 and Judgment Day 04 come straight to mind.

I sometimes agree with that, but in the age of 14 PPV's a year, it's hard to keep a feud going without the occasional DQ ending. When there were only 5 PPV's a year, a DQ ending was just inexcusable, but with the current product, I think it's more acceptable sometimes, if not necessary.

I really don't mind it too badly as long as A) the match itself was at least watchable, and B) the ending helps to advance the storyline to an even more watchable match at a future PPV.

I think dq endings are for free tv. All ppv main events should have a finish. It doesn't have to be clean, but there should be a real decision of some kind. I agree that a dq ending can advance a feud, but it should never end a show. Look at Summer Slam 01. Austin/Angle was the real main event, but went 2nd to last so as to accomidate the dq finish, which actually helped that feud.

While they may not be the worst endings. I lost all interest in the two 2000 shows that had Benoit winning the title from Rocky, only to have the decisions quickly reversed, leading to an overly predictable Rocky wins finish.

Starrcade '97. Specifically Nick Patrick's uber-slow "fast count."

Great American Bash '00. I mean...GOLDBERG TURNS HEEL FOR NO REASON, ONLY TO TURN FACE A MONTH LATER!?

Greed (March '01). Steiner retains against DDP via knockout (DDP passed out in the Steiner Recliner after Steiner had used a lead pipe on DDP's back a few times). WCW had to know that this was their last PPV. And they ended it with Steiner defeating Page AGAIN (I don't think there's been a single Page/Steiner match that Page won). I'm all for Booker T winning the World title on the last Nitro, but that was too rushed, and this match was pretty solid and would have been a whole hell of a lot better if DDP got revenge on the man that took out his two best friends in the company (Goldberg and Kevin Nash).

I'm saying Bast at the Beach '98. Goldberg vs. Curt Henning. If there was anyone who could carry Goldberg at the time, it was Henning. And it was 4 minutes long. Henning gets a title shot, and it's a fucking squash.

Well, "technically" that doesn't count, since that wasn't the end of the PPV. The Goldberg/Hennig match was before the main event, if I'm not mistaken.

I just watched it about a week ago, I could have sworn it was the end. Maybe that's just where I stopped watching.

Guest Phenom

WCW Uncensored 1998: You got Hollywood Hogan and "In The Navy" Randy Savage, built up for weeks, made into a STEEL CAGE match, for what? A no contest. You had great matches, like Sting vs. Hall, Booker vs. Eddie, and Bret vs. Perfect, and you up up with a dusty finish. Pitiful.

Oh, and Royal Rumble 1999.

Hogan/Rodman vs. Page/Malone was definitely the last match at that PPV.

But I'm surprised nobody mentioned Uncensored '98. Hogan vs. Savage in a cage, Sting comes in, Savage beats him up, and leaves. And that's it. No decision or anything.

Edit: The post before this was NOT up before I posted what you see above.

Nope . . . . Hogan/Rodman vs. DDP/Malone was the main event for that show. But you're right about the Goldberg/Hennig match sucking fairly badly - Hennig deserved a bit better than a four-minute squash in a World title match. Then again, SO MANY wrestlers deserved a bit better than the shit sandwiches they were dished out while working for WCW.

I just remembered when someone mentioned Hogan.

I don't think that changes my choice, though.

All the WCW ppvs from the nwo-era where Hogan went over at the end...so many dissapointing shows back then.

Even when Hogan got beat it was bad - how about Uncensored 99 where Ric Flair beat him for the World title in a First Blood cage match. He won by PINFALL!
