Mik Posted November 5, 2004 Report Posted November 5, 2004 Houston Astros free agent center fielder Carlos Beltran is seeking a 10-year contract, his agent told a television station on Thursday. "All of the fundamental aspects about the desire of him to stay in Houston and to look at Houston as a serious contender for his services I think are there," Scott Boras said in an interview with KRIV. Boras said Beltran is also interested in a couple of other teams, but he did not name them. He declined to discuss salary figures. "He is going to just go through the process, talk to those teams, and we are going to evaluate the ability of the club to have a winning environment every year, and certainly the economics of it." Astros owner Drayton McLane told the station that the team will not receive the financial parameters from Boras until next week and won't respond until then. Beltran hit .435 in the postseason with a league record-tying eight homers, 14 RBI and 21 runs scored in 12 games. He came to the Astros in a midseason trade from Kansas City, and has few ties to the Houston area. Only a handful of teams will be able to afford the 27-year-old All-Star's soaring price tag -- the New York Yankees likely chief among his suitors. The Chicago Cubs were also said to be interested.

I have even more respect for John Stockton now, who always did his own contract negotiations with management, without some slimy agent making ridiculous demands for his own personal gain.

Even the Yankees would have to be leary about it, given that they're already stuck with a big contract they can't move (Giambi) due to injury and such. Not saying that Beltran's going to break down or anything, but I can't see him getting more than 5 or 6 guaranteed years.

If beltran gets between $20-$25 million, it proves that all sports needs a salary cup. I don't think even george would be willing to spend that much money on one baseball player.

I'm beginning to think that players, agents, owners and everyone related to the sport besides the little people (meaning fans, concession workers, etc.) are just fucking idiots now.

Beltran deserves a Vlad/A-Rod type contract, no question, because he is a yearly MVP candidate and can bring a team a championship and a ton of revenue, but 20mil for 10 years is outrageous, BUT, it's quite obvious that Boras wants a blood and guts bidding war and is setting the bar as high as possible. No doubt SOMEONE will pay close to that demand to get Beltran, could be the Mets, could be the Yanks, could be a wildcard.... Personally, I'd like to see him stay in Houston, I think he's a good fit there And I think 8 years at 14 mil per is, dare I say it, reasonable

Anyone remember when Kevin Millwood supposively had a 5 year/$75 Million offer on the table? The A-Rod type contract will not happen again, but Beltran will get a big contract. There are at least six teams seriously interested in his services. All of them are willing to pay $12-14 Million, I bet. This starts a bidding war, because some team has to set itself apart from the rest in order to land that contract. That team will likely be the team willing to risk seven or eight years. I would certainly question whether Beltran is worth that money. He is not a great hitter in the Rodriguez or Ramirez mold. .284/.353/.490 is hardly impressive, and you have to hope that this season wasn't a career year at the plate.

He has the potential to get there, but right now he's a notch below. And ten years is waaay too long. A good 5 year contract for 100 million is fine. And he's not going to get 25 million year, unless it's from the Yankees. I don't see any other team breaking the bank like that for one player.

He's also an injury risk. No one's getting A-Rod money anymore, as the game's salary structure has changed since then. Someone will offer Beltran 6 or 7 years at about $14m per year, and we'll see where it goes from there.

Mark Henry was a piece of shit from day one. Beltran can probably give them some value for the first four or five years of his contract, but who knows how fast his skills will diminish once he passes age 32?
