The Mandarin Posted November 7, 2004 Report Posted November 7, 2004 Same thing as the Kubrick poll. I've seen bits and pieces of many of his movies, but the only ones I can recall seeing in full are Schindler's List, AI, Minority Report and Catch Me if You Can. Schindler's List is easily the best from there, but Minority Report ain't such a bad movie. Discuss.
Nighthawk Posted November 7, 2004 Report Posted November 7, 2004 Jaws. Judge the movies by how well they succeed in their own genre and you'll agree. Schindler's List seems like a good movie, and it is, but it never made anyone afraid to sit on the toilet.
Nighthawk Posted November 7, 2004 Report Posted November 7, 2004 I see someone voted for Saving Private Ryan. That's not a very good movie. It does have one of the greatest scenes in a movie, the opening, but the whole movie isn't that good.
Vern Gagne Posted November 7, 2004 Report Posted November 7, 2004 Jaws. Judge the movies by how well they succeed in their own genre and you'll agree. Schindler's List seems like a good movie, and it is, but it never made anyone afraid to sit on the toilet. It did make people afraid to be Jewish. Oh and my choice is Duel.
the max Posted November 7, 2004 Report Posted November 7, 2004 Other: Hook! *runs from the masses that hated Hook*
bobobrazil1984 Posted November 7, 2004 Report Posted November 7, 2004 I'm gonna have to go with Raiders of the Lost Ark!
Youth N Asia Posted November 7, 2004 Report Posted November 7, 2004 I think it's a matter of opinion, so I voted Saving Private Ryan. Cause I like the whole movie...so maybe you're wrong and I'm right.
Kahran Ramsus Posted November 7, 2004 Report Posted November 7, 2004 Raiders of the Lost Ark is in my top five movies ever, and is one of the most influential films ever made. It is also his best directing job. Plot-wise, it isn't exactly original, but it is just masterfully shot and performed.
Kahran Ramsus Posted November 7, 2004 Report Posted November 7, 2004 Other: Hook! *runs from the masses that hated Hook* It was better than 1941.
godthedog Posted November 7, 2004 Report Posted November 7, 2004 'schindler's list'. it's not even close. it abounds with fantastic scenes, and is the only work of art in the 20th century i can think of that dares to even try to personalize the holocaust while maintaining its enormous scope. it doesn't quite succeed, but it goes farther than anything i've ever seen in making us remember that each of these people had a name and a face. using the list as a symbol is a brilliant answer to the kind of dehumanization the holocaust has come to stand for, and spielberg's constant focus on the human face feels just right.
sfaJack Posted November 7, 2004 Report Posted November 7, 2004 Of the films listed that I've actually seen, I enjoyed Raiders of the Lost Ark the most, so that gets my vote.
The Czech Republic Posted November 7, 2004 Report Posted November 7, 2004 Eegah. Watch out for snakes! I voted for Schindler's List, no question. One of the most significant movies ever. Saving Private Ryan is a close second.
Guest Shutterspeed Posted November 7, 2004 Report Posted November 7, 2004 Agreed. There are some brilliant films in there, but Schindler's List is the most brilliant.
Guest Vitamin X Posted November 7, 2004 Report Posted November 7, 2004 Spielberg is a god-awful fucking director. Schindler's List is the only piece of tripe he's made that's actually moving, and damn good. Although I voted for Jurassic Park, because that was the most entertaining flick. It was great watching his reaction when the Academy announced American Beauty as Best Picture for 1999 against his beloved Saving Private Ryan.
godthedog Posted November 7, 2004 Report Posted November 7, 2004 'shakespeare in love' beat 'saving private ryan'. which was all the more entertaining, cause 'shakespeare in love' wasn't all that great.
Guest Vitamin X Posted November 7, 2004 Report Posted November 7, 2004 Okay, actually I'll take it back. Spielberg isn't a bad director, I just hate how he turns everything into a merchandising machine.
BlackFlagg Posted November 7, 2004 Report Posted November 7, 2004 BEST is Schindler's List, no question...but favorite, Raiders
Tawren Posted November 7, 2004 Report Posted November 7, 2004 I've never seen Schindler's List, so my vote goes to Jurassic Park. Just an awesome fucking movie.
bob_barron Posted November 7, 2004 Report Posted November 7, 2004 Okay, actually I'll take it back. Spielberg isn't a bad director, I just hate how he turns everything into a merchandising machine. Like the Terminal, Amistad, Catch Me If You Can, and Schindler's List? The Shakespeare in Love upset was in 1998. Spielberg did win best director that year
Guest Vitamin X Posted November 7, 2004 Report Posted November 7, 2004 The term 'everything' was used loosely there. Amistad and Schindler's List were blatant attempts at trying to win an Oscar, however. It's difficult for me to respect someone as an artist when there's an alternate motive behind the films instead of trying to convey whatever meaning is behind it, even if a film is just for pure entertainment purposes instead of artistic.

Considering Spielberg is Jewish and did it for free- I don't think Schindler's List was an attempt to win an Oscar at all. He wanted to tell an extroardinary (sp?) story that affected his own people.

I have all six Schindler's List collectible cups from Burger King. The Ben Kingsley one is too short.

AboveAverage484 Posted November 8, 2004 Report Posted November 8, 2004 Hey Vern, I had Guderian up in my sig for like a week or two. I wouldn't necessairly call him a mastermind or anything. Manstein was a better tactician and strategist. Unless of course he's one of the "bad."
