What is deal with Jack Johnson? That guy is terrible and yet seems to be a main act everywhere he goes. I mean, headlining with Pearl Jam, Metallica and Kanye West? What fucking planet am I living on?

I kinda like that Vampire Weekend album. It's not mind-blowing or anything, but it's pleasant enough and definitely less deserving of hate than a lot of other "blog-rock" (ughh) shit.

I bet it's terrible.

I don't think you would make it through the whole thing.

Guest Tzar Lysergic

Frat-a-riffic headliners for Bonnaroo. Let's hear it for drunk bros pissing off of the roof of an RV.

I'm aware it's been discussed fairly recently, but Bryan Ferry's 'A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall' is fucking tits as well.

Why aren't there more people here who realize this.

Thanks to Slacker, I've heard an awful lot of Ferry's Dylan covers. On the whole, they're surprisingly great. I really like "A Hard Rain..." and "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" in particular. It's also kind of cool and weird that they pop up on a bunch of different albums--yeah, there's a ton compiled on Dylanesque, but I think I've seen at least two separate albums that had just one or two Dylan covers tacked on.

When Jack Johnson plays "Bubblytoes," I just want to kiss guys relentlessly.

lol. That's one of probably only two Jack Johnson songs I actually like. The other being Flake. The next three CDs have not a single highlight.

I just found out today that The New Pornographers and Okkervil River are playing here in April. Tickets are only $15. I'm pretty psyched.

Well, his early solo albums were largely covers, and yeah, Dylan's songs would occasionally pop up. I can't stress enough that These Foolish Things is worth anyone's time.

Hey, speaking of Ferry, what would you guys recommend of Roxy Music or Bryan Ferry to me? I've always liked the little stuff I've heard from them and I've decided I want to pick some stuff of.

Speaking of shows coming around here... besides New Pornographers/Okkervil River there is also a Super Furry Animals/Times New Viking show coming up. I'm probably gonna skip that one, though. I'm having a very hard time getting through the Times New Viking.

The aforementioned These Foolish Things is full of an awesome range of covers. I haven't ventured that deeply into the Ferry solo catalog beyond that and scattered songs. For Roxy Music, I love For Your Pleasure from the Eno albums (the self-titled album is very good too) and Country Life after Eno left. I believe Inc is an Avalon guy.

It's tough to go wrong with any of those. Ferry had a really fantastic run through the early 70s.

The first Roxy Music album is flawless.

You think so? While I'll agree that the run of "Re-Make/Re-model" to "2HB" is almost perfect, the second half of the album bores me to tears. Well, "Bitters End" is nice enough, but not so much as to make up for soporific four songs that precede it.

Arbitrary Roxy Music Ranking

1. Avalon

2. Siren

3. Country Life

4. For Your Pleasure

5. Stranded

6. s/t

7. Manifesto

8. Flesh + Blood

Had the s/t just been an ep of the first five songs, it'd have been at least #2 or maybe even #1.

I can't remember the last time I listened to it, honestly. "Flawless" might have been a little hyperbolic, but it's a very good album.

That song "Ladies and Gentlemen" by Saliva really fucking sucks.

Well, it is Saliva.

What's the word on MGMT? My friend has been pimping them as I think her cousin is somehow involved, but I just can't get into them at all.

Eh - I like a few of the songs on Oracular Spectacular. It's a bit weird at times but I enjoy it.

Yeah - so the Grammy Awards are on. So far, the only highlites were Kanye's performance of Hey Mama and Alicia Keys performance. I don't really listen to her music but I always enjoy it when I hear it.

I'd have quit watching already but I'm wondering how Amy Winehouse's fresh out of rehab performance later tonight (via satellite) is going to turn out.
