Question, how/where/when did you guys get into (insert artist/group) in general? I need some guidance here cuz I swear, I haven't heard of 90% of the people mentioned in this folder, much less listened to their music (think I mentioned this before). Are they that obscure, or am I just not looking hard enough (or in the right places)? Pretty much any genre will do, particularly hip-hop/R&B.

It helps to read a lot of reviews and articles on music. If you like artist A, reviews will invariably bring up comparisons to artists B, C, and D, who you can then explore. The internet is an amazing tool in this regard, as there are countless sites where you can read about music, and then you can go elsewhere to either sample or steal the music you're curious about. Pre-internet, you'd frequently have to buy things with only a very foggy notion as to what they would sound like. But, yeah, recommendations from people whose taste you trust, websites, magazines, etc. are the key to finding out about all of this stuff.

The Kid A review is still the worst thing Pitchfork's ever published. I mean, holy shit

The experience and emotions tied to listening to Kid A are like witnessing the stillborn birth of a child while simultaneously having the opportunity to see her play in the afterlife on Imax.

I had never even seen a shooting star before.

I've had a few spirited discussions with Brent DiCrescenzo at another board. He's still ridiculous.

Yeah, just look around the internet in things that pertain to what you like. Like lately I've been into indie covers of pop songs, so I've been looking through those, which is how I heard of Travis, The Automatic, Hard-Fi, et cetera. Or since I like The New Pornographers I looked into the various members of the band and got into Neko Case, A.C. Newman, Destroyer, Immaculate Machine, and The Heartbreak Scene. And even if you're opposed to illegal downloading there are places like Stereogum and the like where you can legally download this stuff for free or at least listen to samples to see if you like it.

What would be a better Pantera song by my band to cover: "Cowboys From Hell," "This Love," or "Strength Beyond Strength"? I think we're leaning towards CFH if we do a cover at all, and even then only up until the second chorus, but I'm still pulling for "Strength..." because it sorta fits with the newer shit we've been playing.

Out of those three, Cowboys from Hell, but I recommend, "Hollow", "Floods" and "I'm Broken"

I thought you don't like Pantera, Corey? Or was it just Dimebag?

I can't recall ever saying I didn't like Pantera, at least not here (I went through a phase where I didn't care for them), so I think you're mistaken. I know I said I didn't like any of the Pantera off-shoots (Down, Superjoint Ritual, Necrophagia, and Damageplan; Rebel Meets Rebel is decent at best), so maybe that's what you're thinking of?

No I remember you stating that you didn't like something about Pantera, I just can't think of what it was.

If you don't have Pentagram's First Daze Here, then get it. Great stuff.

Sounds good to me.

I know I'm in the strict strict minority here but I love The Fratellis. Their second CD is just as ridiculous and over the top as the first and (in my eyes) equally as awesome. It's just fun.

They're a good singles band. I'm sorry but they are.

I heard a song by the Fratellis while flipping through the Music CHoice channels yesterday and thought absolutely nothing of it.

Check out the band iwrestledabearonce. They're fashioncore to the nth degree, but fuck...the singer is a chick who can growl deeper than most men. Not, like, uber-forced like Angela Gossow, and not just raspy-as-fuck like Wendy O Williams, I mean growl. Plus, she's kinda cute. A petite Asian scenester who can spew phlegm better than most of the well-known death/hardcore vocalists.

I just listened to them the first time a few weeks back and was pleasantly surprised.

I'm with ya. They're a lot of fun.

Know what else is a lot of fun? Girl Talk. I didn't think I'd be able to stomach an entire albums worth of sampling, but this is great. It's free, too, they're pulling a Radiohead.

"No Diggity" over the flashing lights beat is one of the more transcendent music-listening moments I've experienced lately. Night Ripper was a serious party mix, while this one plays a bit more like the prelude to throwing down. Quite fond of it all so far.

Girl Talk is a he, not a they.

Why? When it's done right sample-based song creation can be just as artful/worthwhile/interesting as "traditional" music (cf. The Avalanche's Since I Left You, which is maybe my favorite album ever).

Also, I don't really like Girl Talk. The whole enterprise leaves a sort of sour taste in my mouth for some reason.
