MFer Posted June 19, 2008 Report Posted June 19, 2008 Question, how/where/when did you guys get into (insert artist/group) in general? I need some guidance here cuz I swear, I haven't heard of 90% of the people mentioned in this folder, much less listened to their music (think I mentioned this before). Are they that obscure, or am I just not looking hard enough (or in the right places)? Pretty much any genre will do, particularly hip-hop/R&B.
Kinetic Posted June 19, 2008 Report Posted June 19, 2008 It helps to read a lot of reviews and articles on music. If you like artist A, reviews will invariably bring up comparisons to artists B, C, and D, who you can then explore. The internet is an amazing tool in this regard, as there are countless sites where you can read about music, and then you can go elsewhere to either sample or steal the music you're curious about. Pre-internet, you'd frequently have to buy things with only a very foggy notion as to what they would sound like. But, yeah, recommendations from people whose taste you trust, websites, magazines, etc. are the key to finding out about all of this stuff.
Guest Jesus Freaks on Coke Posted June 19, 2008 Report Posted June 19, 2008 The Kid A review is still the worst thing Pitchfork's ever published. I mean, holy shit The experience and emotions tied to listening to Kid A are like witnessing the stillborn birth of a child while simultaneously having the opportunity to see her play in the afterlife on Imax. I had never even seen a shooting star before. I've had a few spirited discussions with Brent DiCrescenzo at another board. He's still ridiculous.
Ravenbomb Posted June 19, 2008 Report Posted June 19, 2008 Yeah, just look around the internet in things that pertain to what you like. Like lately I've been into indie covers of pop songs, so I've been looking through those, which is how I heard of Travis, The Automatic, Hard-Fi, et cetera. Or since I like The New Pornographers I looked into the various members of the band and got into Neko Case, A.C. Newman, Destroyer, Immaculate Machine, and The Heartbreak Scene. And even if you're opposed to illegal downloading there are places like Stereogum and the like where you can legally download this stuff for free or at least listen to samples to see if you like it.
Smartly Pretty Posted June 19, 2008 Report Posted June 19, 2008 I sometimes follow wikipedia links and find out who my favorite bands toured with.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted June 20, 2008 Report Posted June 20, 2008 I forgot how much I loved the live version of "Gone" that's on the bonus disc from M83's Dead Cities, Red Seas, & Lost Ghosts." Made my morning.
Ravenbomb Posted June 20, 2008 Report Posted June 20, 2008 So the Violent Femmes did a cover of "Crazy" by Gnarles Barkley that's pretty good. I got the acapella version.
Corey_Lazarus Posted June 20, 2008 Report Posted June 20, 2008 What would be a better Pantera song by my band to cover: "Cowboys From Hell," "This Love," or "Strength Beyond Strength"? I think we're leaning towards CFH if we do a cover at all, and even then only up until the second chorus, but I'm still pulling for "Strength..." because it sorta fits with the newer shit we've been playing.
Nighthawk Posted June 21, 2008 Author Report Posted June 21, 2008 I'm listening to Don't Break the Oath right now, and the bonus track is on. A "Death Kiss" demo. Holy shit, King Diamond sounds exactly like Vince Neil on this.
Corey_Lazarus Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 King Diamond...oh man. I've tried to get into him, but I just can't. I like the new single, "Give Me Your Soul," but most of it...ugh. His voice completely ruins it for me. It's fun to parody, but not much else.
Red Baron Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 What would be a better Pantera song by my band to cover: "Cowboys From Hell," "This Love," or "Strength Beyond Strength"? I think we're leaning towards CFH if we do a cover at all, and even then only up until the second chorus, but I'm still pulling for "Strength..." because it sorta fits with the newer shit we've been playing. Out of those three, Cowboys from Hell, but I recommend, "Hollow", "Floods" and "I'm Broken" I thought you don't like Pantera, Corey? Or was it just Dimebag?
Corey_Lazarus Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 I can't recall ever saying I didn't like Pantera, at least not here (I went through a phase where I didn't care for them), so I think you're mistaken. I know I said I didn't like any of the Pantera off-shoots (Down, Superjoint Ritual, Necrophagia, and Damageplan; Rebel Meets Rebel is decent at best), so maybe that's what you're thinking of?
Nighthawk Posted June 23, 2008 Author Report Posted June 23, 2008 You know, I'm going to call "Hennessy & XTC" by B.G. featuring Big Tymers a very underrated rap song. It's seriously one of the funniest things I've ever heard.
PUT THAT DICK IN MY MOUTH! Posted June 23, 2008 Report Posted June 23, 2008 The video's pretty sweet too (warning: prob. NWS)
Red Baron Posted June 24, 2008 Report Posted June 24, 2008 I can't recall ever saying I didn't like Pantera, at least not here (I went through a phase where I didn't care for them), so I think you're mistaken. No I remember you stating that you didn't like something about Pantera, I just can't think of what it was.
Gary Floyd Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 If you don't have Pentagram's First Daze Here, then get it. Great stuff.
Bruiser Chong Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 The video's pretty sweet too (warning: prob. NWS) I haven't thought of this song in years. So long in fact that I didn't even realize Mannie and Birdman had anything to do with the track.

Ravenbomb Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 So some people like Dan Bejar and Marcy Emery have gotten together to form a Mark Szabo cover band. For the most part I like the originals better, though they're really good covers, but on this one I think I prefer the cover. http://www.seeqpod.net/search/?plid=8d82797563
Mik Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 I know I'm in the strict strict minority here but I love The Fratellis. Their second CD is just as ridiculous and over the top as the first and (in my eyes) equally as awesome. It's just fun. They're a good singles band. I'm sorry but they are.
Guest !!! Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 I heard a song by the Fratellis while flipping through the Music CHoice channels yesterday and thought absolutely nothing of it.
Obi Chris Kenobi Posted June 26, 2008 Report Posted June 26, 2008 So, this new Weezer Album (red)... is it a joke? Seems like Weezer taking the piss out of themselves. That or they let a bunch of 12 year olds write their songs now.
Corey_Lazarus Posted June 26, 2008 Report Posted June 26, 2008 Check out the band iwrestledabearonce. They're fashioncore to the nth degree, but fuck...the singer is a chick who can growl deeper than most men. Not, like, uber-forced like Angela Gossow, and not just raspy-as-fuck like Wendy O Williams, I mean growl. Plus, she's kinda cute. A petite Asian scenester who can spew phlegm better than most of the well-known death/hardcore vocalists.

They're a lot of fun. Know what else is a lot of fun? Girl Talk. I didn't think I'd be able to stomach an entire albums worth of sampling, but this is great. It's free, too, they're pulling a Radiohead.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted June 26, 2008 Report Posted June 26, 2008 "No Diggity" over the flashing lights beat is one of the more transcendent music-listening moments I've experienced lately. Night Ripper was a serious party mix, while this one plays a bit more like the prelude to throwing down. Quite fond of it all so far.

Annabelle Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 weezers cover of the weight is awwwful. so bad.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 Ew. I'm not even gonna try that. The excessive and wrongheaded yelping must be terrible.
PUT THAT DICK IN MY MOUTH! Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 I didn't think I'd be able to stomach an entire albums worth of sampling, but this is great. Why? When it's done right sample-based song creation can be just as artful/worthwhile/interesting as "traditional" music (cf. The Avalanche's Since I Left You, which is maybe my favorite album ever). Also, I don't really like Girl Talk. The whole enterprise leaves a sort of sour taste in my mouth for some reason.
