Must See Matches

Recommended Posts

Michaels re-MADE himself in that bout, solidifying his spot and going forward into a great year end bout with Triple H on Raw, as well as a decent effort at Rumble 04, a good match with Benoit in February on Raw, and the WM/Backlash main events.

Everyone was on in that bout. There were NO slow spots. All action. All bumping. Desperation on Austin's behalf. Drama.

It was **** 1/4 to **** 1/2 to me, depending on which time I viewed it, and the WWE Raw MOTY for 2003, actually just slightly behind Smackdown!'s Benoit/Angle at Royal Rumble 2003.

I reccomend that for the initial post.

Hope you noticed I was being sarcastic on my previous post. I totally agree with you on this, probably MOTY for RAW in 2003, although I also love HBK vs Y2J from WMXIX. Benoit vs Angle is my MOTY overall for 2003.

Christ guys, that match was not any good at all. They do absolutely nothing for 40 minutes with no build, no teases, no hints for the final section or anything, and it is just formula your move my move FINISHER crap. RVD, Booker T, Mark Henry, The Dudleys, Steiner, they all do nothing and are treated like nothing. Jericho and Christian aren't treated much better. None of them do anything interesting or special. For a match of EPIC PROPORTIONS~, nobody shows any intensity or desperation (except HBK in the very final minutes). Then it is down to 3 on 1 and while it is fine for what it is, there is nothing special at all about the final segment. HBK does his usual stuff which is sloppy as hell and then a run in for the finish. There was no strategy or anything displayed by anyone until the heels did the weak and short 3 on 1 segment at the end until HBK jesused up. Pedestrian stuff that they could have improved drastically by doing a better opening stretch or even thinking about structuring the match better by giving the nothing guys something to do other than "I'm going to hit my move, but you'll punch me so I'm on the defence now".

Since Sledgehammer basically said everything I would, I don't feel like repeating the same stuff, and I'll just add this in...

"Bitch, bitch, bitch..." is all I'm seeing about how the match wasn't good.

Well I guess I can't argue with those reasons.

You're retarded. While I disagree with Tawren's assessment of the match at least he actually you know broke down the match and said what he didn't like.

What did you contribute?

Austin/Angle from SummerSlam......2001 I think.

This is a debated match, some think it's not very good, mostly because of the crap ending, but IMO the rest of the match makes up for it. If you look back at shows before the match, then you get a better feel for it as well. As a matter of fact I'm going to watch it now.

That match is remarkable.

I love the ending. It furthers it and makes Austin seem like a complete coward. Plus, anyone who says "Austin as a heel failed" may have a point, but what about THIS match?

About the ending: It's Kurt Angle. Had it been Benoit or Rock getting screwed out of the title, then long-term there'd be something to complain about. But it's Angle, the two had a fantastic match, and for once, I loved the cop-out ending. It added to the story.

No love for Scotty/Malenko at Backlash 2000? True, Scotty the Dunderhead jumped on the leg that Malenko had been working all match when he did the worm, but the finish redeemed that slip-up in my mind. Even watching it live, before knowing much about supposed criteria for a good match, I said to myself "wow, that was really pretty good." Also throw in that it was pretty much a for-the-hell-of-it program between the two and the entire card was overshadowed by the heavy Austin promotion and it's what I'd call a forgotten gem.

I love that match. Malenko takes Scotty's babyface comeback and dancing and is basically like "Fuck you, watch this" and then drops Scotty on his head off the top rope. The best WWE Light Heavyweight Title match ever of the titles reintroduced period (97-01).

Here are a couple of matches that I really liked that get ignored because of their undercards.

1. Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar HIAC- No Mercy 2002

At the time, this was an awesome match as Taker and Brock had a really good storyline going, and this just cemented Brock as an unstoppable heel. The way that Taker was willing to screw up his broken hand because he wanted to beat Brock so bad, and Brock still just destroyed him was really good.

Of course, they completely ruined it on Smackdown by having Taker come out completely fine, and then giving Big Show credit for taking him out, but for a while it looked like they really had some.

2. Brock Lesnar vs. Big Show vs. Kurt Angle- Vengeance 2003

Speaking of nonstop action, this match had plenty of it. It seemed like every five minutes they pulled out a spot that I'd never seen before in my life. Also, the psychology was pretty good for a triple threat, as the guy would only stay down for a while if there had just been a huge spot hit first. Also, I really liked the finish. It would have been easy for them just to cop out and let Angle pin Show or do something similar to protect Brock, but instead they used the idea that Brock's back had been getting beat to shit the whole match and a simple Angle Slam was enough to pin him.

Finally, a guilty pleasure of mine from around the same time:

Kurt Angle vs. Big Show and TWGTT- 3 on 1 handicap match: Hardcore rules

Yes, by their very nature, handicap matches break the bounds of logic, and completely bury the team involved, even if they win the match. However, for one guy beating up three guys, they made it look as realistic as possible,. They let Angle be smart enough to get the weapons and use those as equalizers so he could put oe guy down while he'd work on somebody else. Also, moving around the arena made it make more sense that he could get away from the lumbering Big Show. Really though, my inner Angle mark was just having an orgasm the whole match watching him destroy three guys, and then get the win on top of everything.

Vengence 2003 isn't ignored. It was widely and rightfully claimed by many in 2003 to be the Best PPV that year. The undercard was really strong with a fantastic tag team title match, a really good Cena/Taker brawl. A short but surprisingly entertaining Knoble/Gunn match, a somewhat amusing apa skit and the trainwreck that was mcmahon/gowan.

No, I wasn't saying they got ignored because their undercards were bad; I was saying that (at least in the IWC), they got overshadowed by them.

A lot of people considered the Tag Title match from No Mercy to be the WWE MOTY, and whenever you hear talk about Vengeance, it's usually the Kidman/Mysterio vs. TWGTT or Benoit/Guerrero in the finals of the tournament for the US Title.

However, the HIAC match from No Mercy was an emotional conclusion to one of the best feuds the WWE's had in the last two years that told a great story, and it really doesn't seem to get it's due.

And as far as Triple Threat matches go, I'd say the Vengeance Triple Threat was actually better than the main event from WM XX. They got away from the typical formula, and actually worked at a high pace the entire match, instead of just laying back and then saving some nearfalls toward the finish.

I haven't watched since WM 19, Brock Lesnar vs. Kurt Angle.

What are some matches anyone can recommend to me since then?

And by the way, I really, REALLY hate Shawn Michaels especially with the shit he pulled at WM 19 where Jericho should have gone over, by all means.

*still a Y2J mark after all this time*

Lesnar/Angle at Mania 18 isn't loved by many, mainly because not only the way the two wrestlers hyped it, but everyone seem to hype it...it was going to be the greatest match of all time.

But with Angle's neck injury going into it, alot of it got changed. And the finish really took a lot away from it as well.

And considering Brock's long gone, alot of the match's aura is gone with it. I remember liking it, and liking their Summerslam match as well.

It definately wasn't as good as it could of been, and for a Wrestlemania main event it's not as big as something like Austin/Rock, but it's solid.

If you're talking PPV, then I'd say these are the bet of the bunch since WM 19 (including every PPV at least once):-

Backlash 03- WGTT/Los Guerreros

Judgment Day 03- WGTT v Eddie/Taijiri (ladder match) Lesnar/Show (Stretcher)

Bad Blood 03- Goldberg/Jericho Flair/Michaels

Vengeance 03- Watch it all- it's all entertaining

Summerslam 03- Elimination Chamber Angle/Lesnar US Fatal Fourway

Unforgiven 03- I wouldn't really recomend anything from here!

No Mercy 03- Mysterio/Taijiri Cena/Angle Benoit/Train Show/Eddie

Survivor Series 03- Both Raw and SD Elimination matches are top notch stuff!

Armageddon 03- Orton/RVD (Foley is ref) Battle of the sexes is a curiosity

Royal Rumble 04- Royal Rumble Match HHH/HBK (Last Man Standing)

No Way Out 04- Eddie/Lesnar Mysterio/Chavo

Wrestlemania XX- Watch it all apart from the tag 4ways and womens matches

Backlash 04- Orton/Foley Benoit/HBK/HHH

Judgment Day 04- Eddie/JBL

Bad Blood 04- Shelton/Orton Kane/Benoit

Vengeance 04- Benoit/HHH Orton/Edge

GAB 04- Eddie/JBL Mysterio/Chavo (Kenzo/Gunn and Holly/Mordecai are funny)

Summerslam 04- Benoit/Orton Eddie/Angle

Unforgiven 04- Benoit/Regal v Batista/Flair Jericho/Christian (ladder)

Taboo Tuesday- Orton/Flair (cage) Shelton/Jericho HHH/HBK

No Mercy 04- London/Kidman

Survivor Series 04- Raw elimination match Shelton/Christian JBL/Booker T

Armageddon 04- Another shitty ppv, but the Fatal 4way in the main event is ok

New Years Revolution- Elimination Chamber

Royal Rumble 05- Royal Rumble Match Angle/Booker/JBL

No Way Out 05- Angle/Cena

Wrestlmania XXI- All good stuff bar the sumo, womens and JBL/Cena matches

Backlash 05- Benjamin/Jericho Edge/Benoit

Judgment Day 05- All good, even Heidenreich entertained me!

I know you hate HBK but in all the matches he's in on here, he looses, including getting squashed by Goldberg at Summerslam 03 and tapping out at WM this year...

As for TV stuff, from what I can recall:-

Jericho/Christian in a cage from Spring 03

Jericho/HBK from Raw Summer 03 (HBK jobs)

Anything with Kidman/Mysterio as a team around Vengence 03 against WGTT

Anything with Eddie from Vengaence 03 onwards including the streetfight against Cena and the match against Chavo after No Way Out 04

Angle/Taker and Angle/Brock (iron man) from September 03

Lesnar/Benoit and Lesnar/Mysterio from December 03

The Benoit and friends/Evolution matches from after WMXX through to August 04

JBL/Eddie in a cage from July 04

The Angle/Eddie series from August/September last year

Mysterio/Angle from October 04 in the UK, and from January 05 in Japan

Benoit/Batista from Janaury 05

The 5 London/Akio matches from velocity are worth hunting down

There's definetly more but I can't think at the moment!

Forget tracking down the last one. It wasn't up to the level of their other ones.

Add: the 2 London/Knoble Velocity matches (3/6/04 and 6/19/04), and the Knoble/Rey Velocity match (5/1/04).

Eddy/Booker vs Rey/RVD from the December 30, 2004 Smackdown is hell of a tag match with a great ending with Mysterio and Guerrero. Had RVD not been injured in January, I bet the series would have continued to Wrestlemania 21.

Just a quick note about this thread:

In my opinion, when somebody says "Must-see" when it comes to matches, I'm thinking of matches that are not just some of the best WWWF/WWF/WWE matches ever, but some of the best matches EVER, period. A lot of the matches selected are based on fan appreciation, which is OK, I guess, but it's like people are just throwing a bunch of matches out there from the last few years and saying that they're better than something like Bret/Perfect from KOTR 93, which is the best WRESTLING match in the history of the WWWF/WWF/WWE.

All I'm saying is that people should really sit down and think about why each match is great, come up with the reasons as to why it's so great, and then post it. Just listing a bunch of so-so or good matches with one or two legit very good/great matches with little or no claim to back them up just ends up being Listmania at its very worst.

SNME #31, which was also the last SNME that ever aired.

Shawn Michaels faces IC Champ Davey Boy Smith.

I won't spoil the ending and result for those who still haven't seen it, but I'll just say this much. Its one of the most entertaining and well worked "short matches" I have ever seen. Its only 11 minutes long, yet it looked like 30. They told a story most guys today will take 40 minutes to tell. Seriously a classic. ****1/4

Which Iron Man was Better? (sorry if this takes from the intent of the thread)

Benoit/HHH Or Brock/Angle?

I wasn't able to see Brock/Angle. It was because of one of those damn hurricanes! I regret living on the coast.

Bad Blood 04- Shelton/Orton Kane/Benoit

What? No Love for HHH/HBK? I found it to be the most entertaining HIAC that stayed completely in the cage. Sure......it....went.....a.....little.....long. :(

Since everything well-known has been mentioned, I'd like to comment on a less popular match. There was a Taker/Angle title match in July 03 Smackdown. I found it to be the best Taker match since 98! Taker actually impressed me(or maybe it was Angle's carrying, IDK). It was pretty damn good in my opinion. :headbang:
