Movies that killed a career

Recommended Posts

So when did Sylvester Stallone's career completely fall apart? Was it with "Stop or My Mom Will Shoot!"? I mean, the never-ending sequels of "Rocky" and "Rambo" weren't great or anything, but they weren't nearly as brutal as "Stop!"

None of those have left him kicking at dust as much Cop Land.

Tons of hype over that movie, as it was supposed to be his big dramatic effort, Oscar-quality performances, etc., the kind of thing that would get him away from the Judge Dredd/The Specialist/Assassins sort of shlock as he was getting older. It ended up being a below-average potboiler with way too many big-name actors and side plots fighting for screen time.

Since Sly failed as a dramatic property, he's been pretty much on life-support.

Compromise and say The Tuxedo started it, and Around the World in 80 Days was the nail in the coffin.

But if Farrell doesn't come up with a hit on his own soon, his marketability will be shot.

He already has a new movie coming out..(Damn this guy is making big money) But it just looks like Alexander...in a different time to me.

Something about some Indians/Native Americans...that my mom calls Pocahontas (that's not the name though) because...well, that's what it looks like.

The New World.

I thought it was a remake of Last of the Mohicans when I saw the preview until some Spanish guy....played by Colin....stepped off a boat.

That movie looks painfully bad.

Sadly, it won't kill his career. He has MIAMI VICE already lined up.

what about guys like Peter Weller, Lou Diamond Phillips, Kiefer Sutherland (until 24 came out) and Rutger Hauer, big in the 80s, straight to video in the 90s...especially Rutger Hauer, his role as Roy Batty in Blade Runner is up in my top 10 of all time movie villians and he really hasn't done shit since...

EDIT: Phillips was great in the Big Hit, but the movie sucked so...

What movie can we blame with killing Jackie Chan's AMERICAN film career?

The Tuxedo or Around the World in 80 days?

How did Shanghai Knights do?

Rutger Hauer is in Batman Begins

I think Farrell should stick to stuff like Tigerland and A Home at the End of the World, maybe an occasional Phone Booth.

Lou Diamond focused more on theater and less on movie projects. Phillips was recently in "The King and I" return to the stage and did very well. Surprisingly, this is the same thing that Steve Guttenberg did. Both do some movie projects off and on but are less selective and rely more on what is available in the time frame they have open.

Hence lots of crappy direct to dvd/vhs releases for both.

Lou Diamond did take time off from the theater to work on "Wolf Lake" but that was the wrong station for that show by a long shot.

Lou will return soon with Mariah Carey in...."The Sweet Science" about a female boxer (Carey). May god help him.

Peter Weller ummm well your guess is as good as mine.

Shanghai Knights made 60 million dollars off a budget of 50 million. It wasn't a hit but it was a success.

Actually he recieved a lot of critical acclaim for that role. It's just everytime he puts together a few movies that are any good (on the "action movie sliding scale" Demolition Man, Cliffhanger) he fucks it up with a couple shitty ones.

Michael Caine somehow escaped having his career going down the toilet after doing that Jaws movie.

Did that fuck up Elisabeth Shue's career just as badly?

Then can we say The Medallion closed the casket and threw it into the ground? I'm sorry, but Claire Forlani, Action Hero just does not sound right.

However, I'm willing to give Rush hour 3 and the rumored "Shanghai Dawn" a chance before I say his career is dead and gone.

Couple other notes about earlier posts:

1) Elizabeth Shue has looked hot in damn near everything since (and including) Adventures in Babysitting.

2) In today's "questionable decisions" topic, I see Kevin Bacon is going to be in Queen Latifah's "Beauty Shop". Yeah, he'll fit right in.

3) Always thought Alicia Silverstone was one of the cutest (not necessarily "hottest") women in Hollywood. I liked her in"Blast From the Past" and "Excess Baggage".

What people fail to realize is that while Jackie is good, and I do love his stuff, he needs a buddy to work with to make the movie really good. He, unfortunately, just can't carry a film himself.

I've always liked Michael Keaton for some reason, and I think White Noise has him poised for a comeback. I can totally see it becoming a surprise hit.

the exception proving the rule being that Dirty Work is my favorite comedy ever. It's a mad, mad world indeed.

I wouldn't say it's my favorite, but it's up there. Norm MacDonald and Artie Lange are gods among men.

I hope you mean this since he's not as physically amazing any more. When he was able to do incredible and crazily comedic antics like in Drunken Master 2 and Fearless Hyena, he can easily carry a movie.

Dont forget Twin Dragons, that was fucking great and he played two characters (both twins)

Let's look at Chris Tucker's filmography over the last seven years.

Rush Hour 3 (2005) (pre-production) .... Detective James Carter

Rush Hour 2 (2001) .... Detective James Carter

Rush Hour (1998) .... Detective James Carter

Of course, this could be due to his outrageous salary demands.

Eddie Murphy got hurt by Harlem Nights I am pretty sure. Prior to this movie, was Coming to America, which was the pinnacle of his comic genius. Harlem Nights had one of the better African American ensemble comic casts and no one seem to click right in that movie. It got smashed by critics and audiances did not go. Eddie had been on a box office roll and this movie really sent him into a tailspin of mediocrity. I don't know if every actor thought that swearing every other word was supposed to be funny, but I just felt this movie just did not have good writing on it and the movie just really was a disapointment to me. Afterwards Murphy went on the skids, making movies likeVampire in Brooklyn, Boomerang, and I think Beverly Hills Cop III (man talk about unecessary sequels). It was not until The Nutty Professor that Murphy made a comeback and had the top comedy of the year. Murphy has made family oriented films his priority since then and they were ok, but nothing classic by no means. I am not sure why this has been, maybe becuase he has children of his own and wants them to be able to watch his movies before they are 17. But Daddy Day Care, Haunted Mansion, Pluto Nash, Dr. Dollittle I & II, and that one where he is a cop on that reality show really does not stand up to 48 Hours, Trading Spaces, Beverly Hills Cop, Delirious, Raw, Coming to America, and even The Golden Child (one of my more guilty pleasure movies). His new movies don't even stand up to his stint on SNL, where he carried the show.
