Isn't that song one of the first people learn to play? I remember a couple of years ago when a family friend was learning to play and she was playing that song within a couple monthes.

And again; I don't think that playing something really easy, badly, means you can "play" it, at least not in the sense that when someone asks "what do they play?" it's a suitable answer.

 

I mean, if I could play a single simple song on guitar, I wouldn't say that I played guitar.

I tried looking up reviews from her latest concert tour- I did find one that mentioned the drums.

 

Avril was nowhere near the microphone, she was in fact perched up by the drum kit waving the crowd to cut the noise. Yes, another side to Ms. Lavigne, she is a very able drummer, and proceeded to play the drums to a Blur track that I honestly can’t name. So if Avril was on the drums, who would sing, the answer, Simple Plan’s bass player.

I remember the entire "alternative" genre of rock music started to come into question as Smashing Pumpkins would continue to win awards under the "alternative band" category, but people started asking the question of, how can you be considered the alternative when your album is the top selling album out there. I think I was about 16 or so at the time, and that is really when I started question thing such as, the radio, mtv's music, and mainstream "artists" in general.

While I'm not nearly the fan of Avril that others (Barron) are, I certainly don't mind her ... and I can actually take a certain pleasure in the fact that she's going to be wicked rich while all the message-board-haters are just getting more and more jealous about it.

The fact that the people defending Avril pretty much conceded the point that, while she technically can do such things, she's not very good at them.

 

And again; being able to play one easy song on drums (which is all we currently have evidence she can do) doesn't make you a drummer.

 

And for the record, I already knew that Avril did some writing; I more or less wanted to know exactly what she had wrote though, because I recall having arguments with other people about other bands, and even though they used the defense "they do write some of their own stuff!", the some in question turned out to be one or two songs.

 

I also find the jealousy bit comical. I'm not jealous of a pop fabrication. I may be jealous of some things and people, but she ain't one of them.

 

And people like Avril are only really considered alternative by the same stupid teenage girls who think she's punk.

Not a good one, but a drummer nonetheless.)

 

And, regarding the song-writing or jealousy aspects, there wasn't really one poster in mind ... I really don't pay much attention to who's posting what, for the most part. It just seemed like an avalanche of people shitting on her, and as soon as BB refuted an argument there was something else.

I'm only gonna say this once more, because I'm sick of saying it.

 

She plays ONE EASY SONG.

 

If I go learn one easy song on a guitar, that doesn't make me a guitarist. At least, not in the sense that if someone asked me what I play, I'd respond with "the guitar", because I only know one song, and it's easy.

 

Now, if she played a variety of songs on drums, then I'd say she was a drummer. But by all current accounts, she doesn't. She plays one.

 

Thus, she's a person who can play one song on drums. Which, in my eyes, is not a drummer.

I taught my brother how to play jingle bells on guitar. While I'm sure that there are songs that are easier to play on guitar, he would not know how to play them since he only knows this one in a "Paint by numbers" sort of way. It's more like a condition, like a very specific function that a robot can do.

You're right ... she's not a drummer. She's a singer/songwriter. But she can play the drums. No one here is claiming that she's John fucking Bonham. People are claiming that she knows at least one song ... which is indicative of being able to play the instrument. Plus, even if it is just one song, how many songs does one need to be able to play to get the classification of being able to play that instrument? Two? Five? Thirteen?

 

And I have to disagree with your "if she doesn't play guitar/drums well, it doesn't count as playing them" theory ... to further my cocksucker reference from earlier, my present girlfriend is horrid at going down on me ... but does that mean she doesn't suck dick? No, she still does, just not that well. Doing something is one thing, doing it well is another. If Special K had originally asked, "Can Lavigne at least play an instrument proficiently? Then you'd have a point. But he didn't, his question was:

Can Lavigne at least play an instrument?

 

And, Paragon, the same way that Barron can't prove how many songs she knows on drums, or guitar, or whatever-else, how can people prove that she doesn't know drums, or guitar, or whatever-else?!?
