There was no show on my birthday either, there was a tv show on that day though.

Championship Wrestling taping:

10/23/82:

Superstar Billy Graham defeated Tony Rico at 1:40

Rocky Johnson defeated Johnny Rodz at 3:25

Buddy Rose defeated Victor Mercado at 2:50

Eddie Gilbert defeated Bob Bradley at 3:08

WWF Tag Team Champions Mr. Fuji & Mr. Saito defeated Curt Hennig & Barry Hart

Don Muraco defeated Jeff Craney at 1:40

Ray Stevens defeated Jerry O at 4:15

WWF IC Champion Pedro Morales defeated Tony Russo

Was Backlund heel champion at the time?

No, back then the face champion would often lose to the heel by Count Out or Dq before winning the blowoff to the feud in a gimmick match.

Who is Bellomo? Who is Demon? Fulton? DeCarlo? Hanson? Scicluna?

Bellomo and Scicluna were on tv nearly every week as jobbers.Hanson had a few shots at the IC title when Morales was champ and had matches with Slaughter and Graham at MSG

Backlund was the face world champion in 1982. His reign lasted 4 years from 1979 to 1983.

Hennig, I think he debuted earlier but that's definitely early in his career, he did a little jobber duty in the WWF before moving on to the NWA and AWA.

ecw_salbellomo.jpg

That's Sal Bellomo. He worked in ECW during their first few years, the Eastern days. He was your basic 300 lb brawler.

I recognize the name of Fulton, don't know much about him.

Swede Hansen was old school, 60's-70's, he played a Swedish strongman, was probably pretty old by 82.

Baron was also real old school, I think I have some black and white footage of him somewhere, he was your typical european heel, Maltese to be exact. I can't believe he was still working in the 80's, he must have been 50+ years old.

I don't know DeCarlo or Black Demon

Whoa! That's a pretty historic card. Inoki, Fujinami, Choshu and Sakaguchi working MSG. The Hogan-Dibiase match, and I didn't even know the title was vacated between Backlund and Duncum.

The Backlund/Duncum thing was due to the Backlund/Inoki Title switch.

Edit: Backlund lost the belt to Inoki in Japan, a few days later they had a rematch between Backlund and Inoki, Bob won but WWF "President" Hisashi Shinma reversed the decision on account of Tiger Jeet Singh's interference and gave the title back to Inoki. Inoki refused to accept it that way and it was vacated.

The match to fill the vacancy was held in NYC, involved Backlund and Duncum, and was going to be aired in Japan. However, since the fans at MSG had no idea what had happened Japan, they thought it was just a run-of-the-mill title defense. Backlund didn't have the belt in his possession and wasn't announced as the champion in the introductions, which they thought was weird (I believe Shimma actually came out holding the belt), but was nevertheless announced as "still" the champion after he won.

So basically, the whole angle was a Japan only deal and the title changes were never officially recognized by the WWF itself until several years back.
