I say it with Green Bay and Tennessee, but that's really about it. They're the only two teams with which I feel I can do it since I've followed them through and through since 1996. Other teams in other sports are mentioned in the third person.

Well, actually 1991, because I didn't have a team before that. So, I just latched on from the very announcement of a team.

No.

Are you on the team? Say "the patroits fucking took it to you." Don't say "We fucking took it to you". The person who generally says "we" is the fat ass who stained his couch with his greasy hands from eating too many Doritos.

What he said. I use it on rare occassions, but I usually try to avoid terms like that, as well as referring to it as MY team. They're my favorite team, but they're not MINE.

No matter how much time and money you devote to a team, you're never really part of it, so it's stupid to use terms like that. We may pay their salary, but they're out there doing all of the work. We're just the cheerleaders and critics.

I try not to, but after the Steelers gave me about 37 heart attacks yesterday I feel I earned the right to.

It's not a HUGE deal but I think it makes you sound like a dumbass and a wannabe.

'91 and '92 were tough seasons for the Fish. They didn't win a single game.

Well, that's how much of a loser I am. I picked them as my team from that moment on and patiently awaited their first game. Hell, I was 9 and 10 those years, what did I know. I was barely old enough for little league.

Its really ashame Mark Patrick lost his radio show on Fox Sports Radio in the mornings.

He used to go by the rule that the only sports fans who can say WE are Packer fans in the actual city of Green Bay, graduates from a school, or people that own stock in teams that have stock.

Otherwise, he'd break their balls if they said we (sound of a rack of billiards balls being broken).

I was wondering what happened to him. Does he have a show anywhere now?

The Patriots tend to say the true fans are all members of the team, and the new Red Sox ownership tend to say that Red Sox Nation is a part of the team so I guess its ok, although I don't really say "we".

I don't think Damaramu should ever use the term. He doesn't even know who he's cheering for half the time.

They just say that shit about their fans because it sounds nice and the fans have $$$. If the fans are part of the team, they should get a salary like the REAL members of the team do. The only time it's remotely acceptable to say we is when you're talking about the school you attend.

What if I use the sun's reflection on my watch, to blind the opposing team's batter from the bleachers, such as in the film Bleacher Bums? Then am I not part of the team? What if I talk about an outfielder's mom constantly until I can tell he's distracted?

It's more that you're a fan of the team and you're talking about the team and I guess it's a way to let others know you're a fan? That's mostly why I do it. I only say "We" for The Sooners, Eagles, Celtics, and Sox.

Any other team I may like I just say "Yeah they're cool" as opposed to any rabid devotion.

I think a lot of people are trying to take the high road and say "only a loser would do that. You are not part of the team!" Then again, I've grown up exposed to years and years of

"what's the score of the Bears game?"

"we're winning by three"

"do you think we have a good shot this year?"

"of course not"

"yeah we got another three-peat!"

and such, without anyone ever challenging our right to associate ourselves with the teams that represent our community.

But if the team is in your city/community then you probably could get away with saying "we", since arguably it is your city that has won, since the team is supposed to represent the community.

How about when it's a national team??

I feel fine saying "we" when referring to the Australian cricket team or an Australian Davis Cup team, etc.

1996? Wow. You truly are a fan.

How old do you think I am. Geez, I was like, 12 at the time. Fuck.

I agree big time with saying "we" about international competitions.

You can say it, but it just makes you a dumb-ass. Although the remark about ownership, or if you went to that particular university could qualify as exceptions...

Yeah

Yeah, that's why I say "we" for the Cubs, but not the Senators.

I voted no ... unless you specifically are part of the team, you can't say "we" ... no exceptions.

Re: the "I've been a fan for a long time": What if you're a fan of a band for a long time? Can you say, "We played a good show"? No, of course not. Or, if you're a fan of a TV show for a long time, can you say, "We had a funny episode last night?" No. So why should you be able to say 'we' for a sports team?

I think it depends on how big a fan or how passionate you are about the sport or team in general.

I've sort have moved away from most sports and lost intrest so I would not use "we" when referring to any team in any sports, even the ones I used to follow.

I think personally that it's acceptable if a fan who watches/attends every game whether they win or lose, and actually care for the team to say "we".

Also, if its in a situation where two fans of different teams are in a debate over "who is better" etc.

I think there needs to be a "La Parka" option because, honestly, who really cares?

If people say "we", then my impression is that they're a dedicated (maybe slightly misguided) fan of the team. How dare people even think of having any sense of attachment to a team.

If people don't say "we", then they're a sports fan and that's that. Sip beer, move on.

In either case, I usually don't even notice it 90% of the time unless the person (the offender) is an annoying little troglodyte...and, if that's the case, the "inappropriate use of we" is probably just the cherry on the shit sundae.
