Ace309 0 Report post Posted April 24, 2005 I was just browsing the archives looking for an old promo of mine and I found Ashes 2 Ashes 2002. This was a match I was really, really proud of at the time, and I think it's held up to time quite well. As some backstory, Thoth had been muddling around as a tweener for a while following the epic Clan-Carnival-Magnificent Seven storyline that finished with War Games at Ground Zero 2002. He had recently turned heel, becoming Orochi, the Lightbringer, to give him a new motivation. With that came a new resilience in the ring and a new take on wrestling - he was more violent, less cerebral than the Thoth we had come to know. Tom had won the ICTV from Perfect Bo at Genesis, when he took over the Magnificent Seven. The storyline between Tom and Thoth went back quite a ways, from Tom's transformation to Durandal in the JL after losing the World Title to Ash Ketchum. Tom had snapped and become a dark character which I had no idea what to do with. In character, after Tom returned to his Superior One character, he began to resent Thoth for making him a dark, gothic character (as a way for explaining the dryness stemming from my inability to write the character well). This was built up with, among other things, Mak Francis going tweener at Dissention 2002 and finally tapping out for the first time but refusing to respect Flesher, shaking Thoth's hand at the end of the match instead. Flesher began going to the Durandal roots, using Durandal's trademark icepick and black mist in a tag match against Thoth before the pay-per-view. Thoth became Orochi and was named as Flesher's opponent for Ashes 2 Ashes, the ICTV Title on the line. Tom Flesher vs. Orochi, Grudge Match, ICTV Title on the line. the.weej 0 Report post Posted April 24, 2005 I forget, was that one of the things I legitimately suggested you try doing (since you had to job the belt and felt very bland about it or something), or did you get it from someone else? Regardless, it's still a great match. Hey, also on that same PPV, probably the only good SWF mtach I ever wrote. It was notable for the fact I wrote 97% of it in one day... one evening... after doing Christmas shopping... hours before the PPV was due. It's 9300 words long and I think I broke 115wpm at least twice while typing. Alex Zenon vs Tod deKindes vs Nathaniel Kibagami -Z
King Cucaracha 0 Report post Posted April 24, 2005 Best match I've ever wrote. Not that I've wrote many matches that stand the test of time. This is the closest to doing it IMO. FAR too long (pushing 17k), but certainly my peak point in terms of SWF writing, no doubt. Landon Maddix vs. Johnny Dangerous- Ground Zero '04, ICTV Title EDIT: This only beats the Clusterfuck because hadly anyone else wrote for that. I am proud of my CFuck match too though. Toxxic 0 Report post Posted April 24, 2005 The Search function isn't working for me, so I can't link to the one I want. But if anyone else wants to find it for me, the match is me vs Dace Night for the World Title, taking place on Lockdown, August 11th 2004 from the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. [bACKSTORY] It's ten days after Toxxic won the World Title for the first time, and he's immediately put up against the man who had basically been his nemesis for much of his career, fellow Brit Dace F'n Night. They'd met twice before; once when Toxxic successfully defended his ICTV Title against Dace in what was, given our respective card positions at the time, probably the biggest upset of my career, and once shortly afterwards when Toxxic and Jimmy 'The Demon' Liston beat the team of Dace and his mentor Danny Williams (in another upset). Dace had said, correctly, that he had been in something of a writing rut at the time of those losses. The reason I am really proud of this match - even though my more recent stuff shows a better understanding of wrestling and pyschology - is that I went one-on-one with Dace Night, at a time when he was writing well and consistently, for the biggest prize in the fed... and beat him. Only just, but I beat him
Justice 0 Report post Posted April 24, 2005 Justice and Rule vs. Deja Vu, Tornado Tag Match for the Tag Titles And the beginning of the Infamous "OMG WTF TLC" debate. I personally just love this match because it was my first real comedy match, but was in an actual serious setting. That, and the ending was one of my absolute favorites to write. chirs3 0 Report post Posted April 24, 2005 I can't think of a match I wrote alone that I'm most proud of. My singles career was never really that great. My #1 pick, predictable as it is, would be Raynor/Edwin at G3. I really do think it's the best stuff I've ever written. If not for Edwin chipping in 3000 words and editing the ending to perfection, I could claim the whole thing as my own, but alas... I also beat Durandel. That counts for something, right? Ace309 0 Report post Posted April 25, 2005 I forget, was that one of the things I legitimately suggested you try doing (since you had to job the belt and felt very bland about it or something), or did you get it from someone else? Regardless, it's still a great match. You tried to talk me out of it... you were quite put off by the shifting perspectives, since I had come up with it as a way of getting around the blandness and you weren't sure it would come across well. That's actually one of the reasons I liked it so much - it was one of the few things you weren't coaching me on that turned out well. I was, however, a big fan of the match you linked to, Z, because it was part of a time where Zenon stopped being Z and started being his own character. It reminds me, though with less kidding-around, of the time that Z beat Wilson with the Stunner. It made me take Z seriously as a wrestler, not just a character. Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted April 25, 2005 My #1 pick, predictable as it is, would be Raynor/Edwin at G3. I really do think it's the best stuff I've ever written. If not for Edwin chipping in 3000 words and editing the ending to perfection, I could claim the whole thing as my own, but alas... That really is yours, though. Let's be honest, it was closer to 2700 words, I think. Though I will take credit for my cinematic writer-nerd editing style at the end, which was probably better work than the actual punch-kick sequences I contributed to the meat. Favorite collabo matches are, unsurprisingly, that match, and Grand Slam's retirement match. And those are my two favorite matches involving the Edwin character at all, I think. JHawk 0 Report post Posted April 25, 2005 ICTV-USJL Unification Tournament Round One: Jay Hawke vs. Todd Cortez There's not much to choose from in a two month career, but I was very proud of this one before I was even halfway finished with it.
janusd 0 Report post Posted April 25, 2005 Far too lazy to look for it, but one of my favourite matches from times long by, back when I was still somewhat n00bish to the whole thing, was my SJL match against Ejiro for the Euro... ahem... Ejiropean title. Ejiro was such awesomeness at the time compared to me, and I -just- managed to trounce him. It still makes me proud, even if it really sucks by now. Backstory: Janus was a n00b and a face in the SJL, and having worked his way up the ladder, got a contendership for the European title. Ejiro Fasaki, part of the JL M7 at this point, had made it the Ejiropean title. Janus won the contendership match, and in an attempt to weaken the champ they set up a Fisherman's Wharf Brawl which Janus also came out on top of before finally beating the dominant Ejiropean Champion in the title match. Shortly after this Ejiro planted the seeds for a heel turn and I started killing people =D
the.weej 0 Report post Posted April 25, 2005 (edited) Don't ask me why, but I decided I'd be a pal and dig up Ejiro vs Janus. So, let's take a trip back to SJL Crimson, December 12th, 2002! TheBostonStrangler 0 Report post Posted April 25, 2005 I don't think I'll bother linking to it, but a personal favorite of mine was a tag match from the summer of 2002 (the June 12, 2002 Storm, to be exact). I had recently rejoined the fed as a member of the then-new Magnificent Seven (which at the time was Wilson, myself, Stryke, TNT, Frost, Danny Williams, and Outcast, IIRC). I was still trying to establish myself as something, and had a random tag team match against Thoth and Spider Nekura, who had just returned. As I recall, Stryke didn't write much of it (if any...I really don't remember), so I just wrote a match and turned it in. Somehow, it won. I was never more proud of a match. I got a triple threat match against Edwin and Spider, which I lost, but it helped to establish me as an upper-midcard type, which I was quite happy about. Right about then, I started feuding with Erek, which was the best thing I ever did in the SWF. Basically, this match elevated me when I really needed it. Good times. The Amazing Rando 0 Report post Posted April 25, 2005 Of course, for myself it's Clark vs. Thugg FTF 04. The idea for it came from the moment Thugg told me I could write what I wanted. I didn't want Thugg to so much as leave his feet until late in the match (He does end up sitting on a table early on backstage, though). The other thing I wanted was a memorable ending, and the "Chokeslam Escape" sequence around the bus, and well, the entire bus section, still makes me smile. I used to have the link in my sig, so I don't feel like finding it. Through all the stuff I did with the HoT, I felt better about my losing Final JL Match Evah than any of the other stuff I wrote against Landon (Iron Monster included). Season's Grievings was fun though.
Mr. S£im Citrus 0 Report post Posted April 25, 2005 Well, in terms of matches that I wrote on my own, it has to be Clusterfuck '04 against Flesher. Not only did I become World Cruiserweight Champion in this match, but it remains, to this day, my only legit (read: non co-write) singles win on PPV: C'Fuck '04: WC vs. Flesher (ladder match) In terms of my favorite collaboration, it has to be the 8-man elimination tag from Ashes to Ashes '03, for a couple of reasons: 1) I was the driving force behind the whole thing; all I had to do was convince Taamo that it was his idea... 2) It was the match in which I finally got closure for the WC/Ejiro storyline, and 3) It was, to this day, my only PPV main event. Cuban Linx 0 Report post Posted April 25, 2005 As I recall, Stryke didn't write much of it (if any...I really don't remember) I wrote the opening portion to the match, but what i did do was just awful, so not only did you beat Thoth and Spider Nekura, but you did it with the the handicap of a useless parter as well. Cuban Linx 0 Report post Posted April 25, 2005 As for me, my numerous failures have left little to be proud of, though there's a small handful of matches that seem to indicate i didn't always totally suck. There's a few back in my IGNJL/SJL days before i became the no-showing monster i am today, from the SWF there's only really one match that warrants mention. 13th Hour 2003 The opening match of 13th Hour to be exact, Beezel vs Crow vs Renegade vs Johnny Dangerous vs Stryke, five-way elimination for the ICTV Title #1 Contendership, one of my countless return matches. Off the top of my head it's the longest non-Clusterfuck/Non-Wargames/Non-Divefire match i can think of, clocking in at a verbose 17,002 words. I don't know if it still holds up, and looking back it seems part of the middle section with the first elimination was cut off when it was posted, but it's the only SWF thing i've done that got any notable amount of praise, and i suppose i am rather proud that i was able to turn the ultimate thrown-together PPV match into something memorable that got more comments than anything else on the show, putting over the debuting Crow something huge as well which i always wanted to do with new guys. Out of my many blown opportunities to be something in the SWF, this also stands out as probably the biggest, after this match and then beating Danny Williams for the ICTV on the next show (he no-showed to job the belt, but we can overlook that) i was the highest i've ever been here, but as is my style i made a royal mess of things and within a month had no-showed my way back out of the SWF again. Angel_Grace_Blue 0 Report post Posted April 25, 2005 I just remembered that I kind of liked the first 13th Hour triple cage match for the Stable title because I was one of the first (If not the very first) to kill (Or at least maim horribly) Chris Wilson by throwing him from the second cage (HIAC-type) into the crowd because he was leaving. Of course, like two weeks later, he was back, and in perfect health. I can't find the damn match, though. Had they won, I would say my world title match against Stubby, Riley, and Fallout (I think it was Fallout. Might've been someone else), or the one against Toxx, but alas, I losted thems. Toxxic 0 Report post Posted April 25, 2005 Whatever multi-team tag match had me as the referee diving onto everybody on the outside rather than counting everyone out. I know I wasn't even involved in writing it in any way, but still... Toxxic & Davis vs Team ANGER vs Martial Law (if they were called that at this point - it was Cortez and Ghost, anyway) for the Tag Titles. If I remember correctly Sarah had promised to write but then didn't write, so I threw the thing together. I was rather uninspired and needed something to keep me interested, so I did the whole 'multiple cruiser bumps to the outside' spot, then had Ced do a Fire Soul from the top rope 'to regain control' before ordering everyone back inside. Mike hated it apparently, but every now and then I need to do something stupid to re-interest me. The Sexual Pandasaurus from Rev-0 vs Urban Empire was in a similar vein ("Dude... you just threw a panda at me!"). And Calvinball II was PERFECT for recharging the ol' batteries... TheBostonStrangler 0 Report post Posted April 25, 2005 WC, I loved that match as well. That 8-man was fucking awesome. In terms of storylines, it's one of the best matches I've ever seen. It provided perfect closure to the epic Wildchild/Ejiro feud, worked on W&D vs. Justice and Rule, had me and Tom on the same side after our feud, furthered TBS vs. Taylor, worked on Flesher's stuff with Ash (I think), and was a kickass match to boot. Awesome stuff that I'm gonna re-read right now.
Ace309 0 Report post Posted April 25, 2005 Flesher's stuff was mostly focused on Ejiro, actually. We were trying to build Ejiro as a contender, and so I was actually quite excited when WC suggested the match because it was going to allow me to take a clean, high-profile loss to Ejiro - shock the kids, and all - without losing the belt. And I loved Stryke's match.
Above Average 0 Report post Posted April 26, 2005 Strike's match was the shit, because it reminded me of why Stryke beat Erek fucking Taylor. And Z's match ruled because I always thought Z was the best writer in the fed, if he could get off his ass and show and that proved it. The 8 man was special because I like to think I see stuff. And as I was reading it, and starting feeling the pacing quicken and see the style change. I noticed it but didn't REALLY notice. Like it made me smile, but I didn't know why. The same thing has happened to me numerous times, and still does when I think I catch something in a match, but this time I had no fuckin' clue what it was. Cause I used to read all of WC's WF stuff and I was like... wow, what the fuck is going on. Then I read it again, after Tom mentioned what happened and thought: damn they actually pulled that kind of stylistic writing off and I didn't see it coming. It blew me away. My favorite co-write is the JL cage match with Drew. It was just fun to write and made the CIA/Mak feud. Written by me, I'd have to say... my pay-per-view match with Craven at 13th Hour if only because I wrote a longer, more devious squash match than Flesher. And I wrote two other matches that I really, really like, but I can't link them for obvious reasons, to the people that know. Muhahahaha.
