Krankor 0 Report post Posted October 19, 2005 Stern said that the dress code will be a lot less restrictive than what people are speculating. He says it'll be out next week sometime. However, I dug up a nugget from ESPN and Marcus Camby that just baffles my mind... Denver Nuggets center Marcus Camby added that the players should receive a stipend to pay for the clothes. Un-fucking-believable. This nimrod wants money for clothes for the dress code. In this land of sports where you have the 12th man on any roster making what amounts to a first or second year doctor's salary, this request by Mr. Camby is ridiculous. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> No its not ridiculous. Not every player in the NBA is getting multimillion dollar contracts. Hell...alot aren't making a million a year. Plus you get taxed 40% when you make close to that amount. So that 1 million dollar a year guy is making around 600k. While living on the road. Not to mention family, yearly expenses and such. Camby is looking out for all of them. So you are asking guys making 100 - 200k per year to go out and get dozens of suits tailored? These ain't regular guys that can go take advantage of the KG 2- 150 deal people. A 7 foot 250lb man cannot buy off the rack. For a tailored suit on a guy of that size you are talking a pretty penny. If the NBA wants to tell these guys that their clothes aren't to be worn anywhere during the season (that is what they are pretty much saying) then they should pony up the bill instead of just saying hey, we pay you alot, so we can decide when large parts of your budget should change to fit our whims. They play SPORTS for a living. this whole dress code thing is just fucking stupid. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It's going to be rough for them to buy a couple of suits and ties with only making 600k a year. It's real tough to scrap together 100 to 200 dollars for a pair of slacks, shirt, tie, and sport coat. I don't know how those guys that sell TV's and electronic equipment at Rex are able to afford it. They must easily be making a lot more money than these players. bobobrazil1984 0 Report post Posted October 19, 2005 The fact that they even thought of this just shows how anal and PR-paranoid the NBA really is. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Speaking of him, artest challeneged ben wallace to a boxing match on PPV in a recent interview. Hey, wasn't it around this time last year Ronnie boy started the whole 'i want a month off for a rap album' thing? and the goofiness begins again
nogoodnick 0 Report post Posted October 19, 2005 Allen Iverson should buy one cheap ass suit and wear it every game just to piss off Stern.
the max 0 Report post Posted October 19, 2005 That's what I'd do. Buy a suit like Napolean Dynamite or something.
Hogan Made Wrestling 0 Report post Posted October 19, 2005 Other possible options: -wear a suit that is way oversized so that it's all baggy -dress like a total pimp, Deion Sanders-style
Precious Roy 0 Report post Posted October 19, 2005 There's SO many ways to bend the rules without breaking them, it just forces dudes who want to make a statement to be creative. I have faith in the Iversons of the game to shove this back in Stern's face without overtly breaking the rules, and that's where the fun starts...
Ripper 0 Report post Posted October 19, 2005 This is still bullshit. The "other companys have dresscodes" shit doesn't even work into the argument because when they aredoing their jobs, they are wearing their jerseys and shorts. They can have all the mandates in the world about that, but they are saying how these guys have to travel and dress basically outside of work. Iam going to predict the future here. They are going to outlaw cornrows soon. Call me paranoid or what ever, but they are going to start telling guys how to cut their hair pretty soon. And yes, 600k is alot, but when you have ALREADY spent money on a wardrobe then all of a sudden you have to buy a ENTIRE new wardrobe, we are talking alot of money. Big Ol' Smitty 0 Report post Posted October 19, 2005 <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Honkie is racial epithet. Used for white people. It was made popular by a man named George Jefferson in the 1970s. You see he and his wife Weezie had a dry cleaning business, so they moved on up to the East Side. To a DELUXE apartment in the sky. They finally got a piece of the pie. Whitey gon take our hair! Damn that hymie Stern. As I understand, high school athletes are asked to dress well for traveling and team functions, college athletes are asked to dress well for traveling and team functions, baseball players are asked to dress well for traveling and team functions, hockey players are asked to dress well for traveling and team functions. Why is it SO outlandish and unprecedented to ask NBA players to trade their $400 throwback jerseys and jeans large enough to smuggle a Mexican child over the border for a sport coat and a nice pair of pants when they're on a flight or at a community event? You know, dress like mature, grown men? I don't see how they have to buy a WHOLE NEW WARDROBE. If you're a professional at 25 years old, you have no excuse for not owning nice clothes. The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted October 19, 2005 It's not really draconian nor oppressive as it is, and it'll probably end up being relaxed, anyway. There's not really anything wrong with having to wear a dress shirt if you're doing some sort of charity obligation or whatever around town. Like we've been saying, the players did a good job of self-imposing a reasonable dress code before, and nobody had a problem with it.

Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted October 19, 2005 Does that scare you? Maybe it's because I live in NY, but I see no "OMG Thug". <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You tell me, honestly, if you were in charge of hiring people at a professional workplace- could be anywhere- that if someone were to come everyday to work dressed like that, or hell even come in to the interview like that in comparison to, say, like this: Who would you be more likely to hire and keep around, or even better, have to go meet clients? You want to look professional, as these guys are PROFESSIONAL athletes. I think dress codes are stupid, but I understand the reasoning behind them and don't think it's that big a deal. With the nearly $7/hour I make at Starbucks, they still expect us to abide by their dress code (black or white collared shirt, no logos, khaki pants, black shoes) and they don't provide any of us with a stipend or uniforms to do it.. What does my broke college ass do? Head over to Ross and buy some shirts, $10 each or something. Need shoes? Payless has got em for $30 or under. I don't fucking care, it's not worth getting fined over (in the NBA's case) or being sent home/fired over (in my case) in either case. Quit whining, the lot of you. Kobe wearing an Eagles jersey on the sideline while injured, and Tim Duncan wearing a huge white T and baggy pants on the bench isn't exactly professional. I'm all for the players wearing a suit while injured and sitting on the bench, but maybe the league should be a little more lenient about the dress code when the players are arriving at the game.
