FINALLY the Jays make up a game on somebody.  I still think they're too far out (4 1/2 back of Oakland), but there's still lots of baseball to be played.

Wow....that was just a horrible play by the Cubs. Why didn't the catcher just step on the plate for the force?

 

I knew the Jays were going to make some noise in the race this year. They're meeting the Yankees soon, I think, so they've got a shot at passing them. They scare me a bit, since the Sox haven't been able to beat them lately for some reason.

Jay's go against the Yanks this weekend, actually. I fully believe they can take 2 from them, with Chacin going Friday, and Leiter scheduled to start Sunday's game. Especially if Halladay makes his return on Sunday.

Watching the Braves/Reds on TBS. It's amazing what the Braves organization has done over the last 15 years. No organization has enjoyed as much success bringing up young talent. This year they've produced Jeff Francouer, and rather than having him sit in favor of washed up veterans like Raul Mondesi, the Braves jettisoned the dead weight and Bobby Cox plays him. The Braves bring in young players one or two at a time, trust them to produce, and the on-field results are clear.

 

And what's truly scary about it all is that no team in their division looks better going forward over the next few seasons.

I refuse to believe Mazzili was the reason the Os were in such a funk, but its crazy how improved the team became just from getting him out of there, but this team wouldn't have won like they did today even last night, so maybe it is.

Abreu did well today. I give him props. Hit a meaningful big-time home run.

 

Even ESPN had the "At bats without a HR" meter on during the highlights, though. So they knew he was slumping.

 

But he did good today.

If he hadn't done so well in the derby, ESPN wouldn't be giving Abreu's slump any kind of attention. Even great players slump. It's stupid to judge a player's ability by a lone month of stats.

I don't wanna argue about it. I've given reasons for those, and they are my opinion. Maybe he can keep it up and make me happy.

 

They're got 3 with the Brewers, who they play well against, so we'll see. They've got a TOUGH September, though, if they make it to where the games matter.

Just wanted to jump in here with two quick things on the Phillies.

 

Abreu gets shit on all the time around this city for the things UTSH is mentioning, and I don't think that it is fair to him at all. If you actually look at his stats, they are about the same in all situations (runners in scoring position, late in games, late in close games, etc.). I think that he got shit on by 610 and people picked up on it, and now you remember the bad. If you think about it, someone who fails 2 out of every 3 times is considered very good in baseball, so it is easy for people to find examples of Bobby getting out in clutch situations and they stick in your mind. Now, on the other hand I don't always get the feeling that he is giving it his all in the outfield. It might just be that he's not the greatest fielder ever, but that is where my problems with Bobby come from, not anything he does at the plate.

 

The other Phillies point that I don't think has been mentioned here, is that by doing nothing, the Phillies have given Ed Wade a 2 year contract extension. Unbelievable to me. He has made maybe 2 good trades during his time here, the team has not made the playoffs once and he hired the worst manager I've seen in a long time (well, not that long since we've had our share). What is it going to take to get Wade out of here?

LaRoche is fourth on the team in games and at bats. The Braves have a nice platoon going, and if Julio's putting up even better numbers, there's nothing wrong with that.
