CanadianChris Posted August 15, 2005 Report Posted August 15, 2005 Useless fact: Today marks the latest a division leader has been below .500 during the course of a season in MLB history, that being the Padres. The old mark was August 12, 1994, when Texas led the AL West by a game, despite being 10 games under .500, on the day the '94 season was halted.
mike546 Posted August 15, 2005 Report Posted August 15, 2005 Yanks start a series against their big bullies, the D-Rays.
King Kamala Posted August 15, 2005 Report Posted August 15, 2005 I just heard on Cold Pizza, that the D-Rays are 18-11 since the break. I think that with a few more veteran pitchers they could be a .500..........................which of course, will never happen.
CanadianGuitarist Posted August 15, 2005 Report Posted August 15, 2005 Huge series in the Wild Card Race, a 3 game set between Toronto and Anaheim(sorry, I won't say LA). Â While Anaheim does have the AL West Lead, Oakland will win the division ultimately. With 3 teams between Toronto and Anaheim, this could shake the Wild Card Race up pretty substantially, especially since Toronto swept three weeks ago.

I think that with a few more veteran pitchers they could be a .500..........................which of course, will never happen. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Â Look for Delmon Young either next month or starting next year. Â Amazing talent. I'd reckon instant All-Star, like Cabrera, Pujols, and A-Rod were.
The Czech Republic Posted August 15, 2005 Report Posted August 15, 2005 Useless fact: Today marks the latest a division leader has been below .500 during the course of a season in MLB history, that being the Padres. The old mark was August 12, 1994, when Texas led the AL West by a game, despite being 10 games under .500, on the day the '94 season was halted. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The Braves are praying that the Wild Card comes out of the East so as to set them up with the Padres.  Also, the DRays would be better just from having Rocco Baldelli in the lineup again, I'd reckon.
bob_barron Posted August 15, 2005 Report Posted August 15, 2005 The Braves are praying that the Wild Card comes out of the East so as to set them up with the Padres  Yes. Then we can finally break our division series slump.
Fartsauce Posted August 15, 2005 Report Posted August 15, 2005 In a series that the Padres will pull off the 'upset'.
The Czech Republic Posted August 15, 2005 Report Posted August 15, 2005 You know, they probably would.
Guest Fishyswa Posted August 15, 2005 Report Posted August 15, 2005 ^I wouldn't be suprised. Anyone know if a team finishing under .500 has made the playoffs, or gone somewhere? Â I really want the Yankees to get within at least 3 games this week. 3 games can be made up in a series, 4.5 not so much. If Boston drops 2 of 3 and we finally beat the shit out of the D-rays like we should of been doing all year, I can see us taking it from there. Boston's offense has been scary lately though so I don't see how Detroit is gonna take A game let alone 2. Hopefully this is the series where they go flat.
The Czech Republic Posted August 15, 2005 Report Posted August 15, 2005 The Texas Rangers were leading the AL West when the strike hit, but because of the nature of two-division play, no, a losing team could not advance to October.
CanadianChris Posted August 15, 2005 Author Report Posted August 15, 2005 The Mets came awfully close in 1973, going 82-79, but no sub-.500 team has ever made the playoffs, and it's doubtful one will this year.
cabbageboy Posted August 15, 2005 Report Posted August 15, 2005 It seemed like the AL and NL west divisions were both awful in 1994 or 95. Didn't the Dodgers get in with a .500 type record in 1995?
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 Dodgers were close to .500 in the strike year but well above in 1995. I think the strike year was a little disceiving as a shorter season tends to allow extremes in these kind of things. Â CanadianChris already pointed out the '73 Mets. The 1987 Minnesota Twins were the worst team record-wise to win a World Championship, going 85-77 in the regular season.
Vern Gagne Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 It should be pointed out the Twins ended the season on a long losing streak after they add already clinched the AL West. So had they needed to their record would probably of been better.
NoCalMike Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 The Texas Rangers were leading the AL West when the strike hit, but because of the nature of two-division play, no, a losing team could not advance to October. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Â The A's were so going to overtake them though.
TheDevilAndGodAreRagingInsideMe Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 The 2000 Yankees had an awful September, losing something like 16 of 18 at one point, and finished around 87 wins or so.
Bored Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 Here's how bad the A.L. West was that year in a nutshell: At the time of the strike they had the four worst teams in the entire American League. The last place Tigers and Brewers both were a half game better than the first place Rangers when the season was ended.
UZI Suicide Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 King Felix is on the mound for Seattle tonight against KC.. 7 k's, 1 hit, 0 walks through 4 innings.
mike546 Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 Schilling blows another save, and I don't think hes going to be closing for much longer.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 King Felix is on the mound for Seattle tonight against KC.. 7 k's, 1 hit, 0 walks through 4 innings. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yeah it's the Royals and all, but their lineup isn't all that terrible. Only the bottom third sports below-average batting average. It is their pitching that makes them truly awful. And having said that, holy god is Felix a stud.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 Also, the Giants' Randy Winn hit for the cycle against the Reds tonight.
Mik Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 I had planned on playing some xbox tonight but I just have to stop and watch Felix pitch on mlb.tv. Â This would be the first time in my entire life that I have ever watched a game just to see someone pitch.
Fartsauce Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 Man, the Mariners have something special here.
Vern Gagne Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 They need to be careful with Hernandez. He's only 19, so there's no need to overwork him and risk Tommy John surgery when he's 23.
Bored Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 The A's are melting down at home. The hot streak is OVER. Angels are going to be two up and the Yankees only a game and a half back. The terrible start is biting them in the ass as they just had so little margin of error even with the incredible run they were on. I really hope this doesn't all come crumbling apart. Â Sorry I just don't accept this team playing this shitty at home. It just doesn't happen often.
Vern Gagne Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 Hopefully Hernandez doesn't turn out to be like Gooden off the field. He's got all the potential to win 300 games. That's way way into the future and alot of things can happen. However he could reach 100+ wins by the time he turns 25.
Fartsauce Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 Exciting Jays/Angels game here. They've been trading the lead back and forth, and the Blue Birds couldn't capitalize with the bases jacked and 1 out. Bottom of 9 coming.
