cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2005 Well, as far as collapses go that were mentioned I'd go: 1. Palmeiro. The guy swore to Congress he never took steroids, then tests positive...then tries to implicate his (so far) innocent teammate. 2. White Sox. I put this #2 because they haven't yet totally fucked up. If they hang on, this is no biggie. Even then they can still get the wild card so not as big of a deal. 3. Orioles. This is mostly due to the obvious Palmeiro distraction. I don't think anyone seriously thought they'd hang on to the division lead anyway. 4. Red Sox. It's no big shock that the Yankees made a run on them. I don't think this is really much of a collapse as much as inevitability. 5. Nationals. This can't be considered a collapse since they are actually a lot better than anyone expected. Besides, did anyone think they could hold on and fend off the Braves (or anyone else)?
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2005 I'd reverse the White Sox and Orioles. Like the Nationals, the White Sox played over their heads. The difference is the White Sox played significantly better. No one expected them to win 90-95 games this season. Besides Palmeiro, the Orioles have dealt with Sammy Sosa and of course Sidney Ponson. The difference is the White Sox played significantly better. No one expected them to win 90-95 games this season. Besides Palmeiro, the Orioles have dealt with Sammy Sosa and of course Sidney Ponson. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Al, Sammy Sosa was probably the LEAST of our troubles. He was the model citizen in the clubhouse and to the press. Of course he also stunk horribly in his worst season ever and did us no good on the field. Much worse were: A) The collapse itself!!! It was simply UNFATHOMABLE that we'd finish under .500, considering our record at the all star break, it might be MLB history in fact. After the first 2 months of being SO awesome, it's mind boggling how bad we got and how quickly. B) Palmeiro going from 3.000/500 hero to steroid disgrace 1B) Dragging Tejada, our lone shining star left into this and implicating his name C) Sidney Ponson getting arrested 3 times (2 DUIs and punching a judge in Aruba), seeing his weight and ERA swell before having his contract voided under the unprecedented "morals clause" which will now have to go to court. D) Lee Mazzilli, a classy, respectable man becoming the scapegoat for our mess and being fired after early considering for manager of the year. 1D) Unless you all are hardcore O's fans and are posting on Os insider board (I assume you don't) you missed all the fun reports of members of his coaching staff sabotaging him to the owner. E) Just when this season is finally about to be put out of it's misery and over, Brian Roberts, the universally loved all star 2nd baseman has his arm nearly ripped off in a grusesome on field collision and is now questionable for next year. Might as well start the misery early. Honorable mention goes to Team curmudgeon Steve Kline who from the very first week (when we were good mind you) endears himself to his new city by bashing the team and wishing he was back in St. Louis to a reporter there. He continues to make foot in mouth statements all year long as he has the worst year of his career. Like I said, Sosa sucked, no doubt, he's finished and was a massive disappointment, but we still didn't give up anything for him, most of his contract is being paid for by Chicago, and he's gone after this year. So no real harm. The blame for that one falls on Peter Angelos for not actually spending the bucks to get Delgado or Sexson or a real power threat to help our lineup and instead playing the whole Washington Nationals are leaving our future uncertain BS card with MLB. Just a god awful seasons in every way and it's nearly killed my love for baseball. EDIT: And now I'm off to Camden Yards. I'm not kidding, I got these tickets a while back and this has been the least enthusiastic I've ever been about going to the Yard. Maybe I'll wear a bag over my head. EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2005 I was just searching out examples. I actually did a piece at NMB, mentioning Lee Mazzilli's firing. In terms of wins and losses, it is not a historic collapse. But in terms of franchise image, it ranks up there.
cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2005 The reason I put the Orioles below the White Sox is that I don't think much of anyone figured the Orioles to finish higher than 3rd anyway. The White Sox might have played over their heads but there were some people thinking they could win the division...I mean hell, it's the AL Central, which has been one of the worst divisions in baseball the past few years (though now with the White Sox, Indians, and Twins all over .500 it's solid). BruiserKC 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2005 Jesus. Some people here act like Rafael committed murder. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Palmeiro cheated, he violated the rules of baseball and sat there before Congress and lied to them about never taking steroids. Granted, the HOF is not full of saints, look at Ty Cobb (racist and bad-ass) and Babe Ruth (womanizer, drunk, and glutton). They never broke the rules of baseball. Rafael Palmeiro broke the rules of baseball and should be punished accordingly for it.
BruiserKC 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2005 Now...as for the White Sox...I wouldn't necessarily call it a collapse in the sense of the White Sox went into complete and total meltdown. Since August 1, they've been at a .500 winning clip...still fairly respectable. Cleveland has gone 36-12 or so in that same span...a .750 percentage. The Tribe is just playing great baseball right now and doing no wrong. It's not as if the South Siders just suddenly forgot how to play and was lucky to win once a week. The Orioles are in FOURTH place and will finish under .500, likely with a worse record than last year. Man, when fans have to resort to defending how brutal their team's collapse was, you know it's bad!

Guest *KNK* Report post Posted September 24, 2005 Jeez... Palmeiro is a low-life scumbag. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> What's funny about this is that before this season, Palmeriro had virtually no identity other then being "the quiet and humble under appreciated future HOFer"... In just a few months time, he's pretty much the biggest scumbag on the face of the earth.

USC Wuz Robbed! 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2005 A crime so serious that the Congress isn't even bothering to press the perjury charges on him. If they don't care, why should you? Oh nevermind. Ruining a man's reputation is the hot thing going on now.
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2005 Yes, everybody else ruined Palmeiro's reputation Maybe all of his fans were plotting the whole time to get Tejada to juice Raffy so they could have a tragic hero. Maybe the Orioles set him up because they wanted to make an even bigger fool out of their team. Maybe Porter should remove himself from Palmeiro's roid-shrunk mini ballsack.... USC Wuz Robbed! 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2005 I think you misunderstood my intention. My point is: EVERYBODY, GET THE FUCK OVER IT. Rafael Palmeiro was dismissed from the team, likely for good. That's punishment enough. He also is receiving a tons of boos from the crowds. That's punishment enough. He was suspended by MLB. That's punishment enough. Jesus men, what do you want them to do, burn him at stake?

Raffy cheated during his career.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2005 Rose still violated one of baseball's most sacred rules and lied about it in a pathetic attempt to get sympathy. He shouldn't be in the HOF. cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2005 Bonds hasn't failed a test as of yet, and for the most part has been lurking in the shadows this year rehabbing and all that. If he actually failed a steroid test it'd be 10x worse than the backlash on Palmeiro. All they really have on Bonds is this vague cream and clear stuff, which sounds like glorified muscle rub to most people. When people think steroids they think of a guy sticking a needle in his ass or taking pills, etc.
USC Wuz Robbed! 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2005 I just think people are severely overreacting over Palmeiro. Whether he lied or not to the Congress shouldn't matter to the average Joe. Are you telling me everyone doesn't lie at one point or other? Get over yourselves and off the high horse.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2005 I can't remember ever seeing an athlete's public image falling faster than Palmeiro's over the last few months. Palmeiro's right up there with OJ Simpson in that regard. Even the players caught up in cocaine-usage don't get as much scorn as Palmeiro has over steroids. I don't know whether it was because he was such a high-profile player, or because of his adament denials. Palmeiro is a baseball player who used steroids. That does not make him inherantly evil. In this case, Palmeiro stated Tejada gave him a B-12 injection. Tejada did, in fact, give him a B-12 injection. And this was months ago, in a hearing that was held under a confidentiality agreement. Whatever opinion you gather is yours. The point is that Palmeiro is likely deserving of our professional scorn, but that doesn't make him a bad person. He's not exactly Albert Belle.
