Top 10 Consoles According to G4 Fans

Recommended Posts

OK, I know most of you people hate the channel G4, but I felt I should put this topic up here anyway:

On their show Filter this week, they showed a Top 10 of Game Sytems, voted by the viewers of the show.

Here's how the voting went:

10 Sega Genesis

9 Nintendo Game Boy

8 Sony PlayStation

7 Nintendo Game Boy Advance SP

6 Sega Dreamcast

5 Microsoft X-Box

4 Sony PlayStation 2

3 Nintendo Entertainment System

2 Super Nintendo Entertainment System

1 Nintendo 64

Anything you have to comment about this list?

Ridiculous. a good percentage of the games were good, but to me, the N64 is and was overrated. The flaws in the system (especially the ones that ended up killing it) outweight the positives.

That's my comment.

Besides being cartridge based, what flaws?

It was hard to develop for if I remember correctly. That's why all of the third parties went over and made games for Sony. And the few games that they did make on N64 were never blockbusters like Metal Gear Solid or Resident Evil or Silent Hill, but just crap games. There was hardly anything on the system worth owning outside of Nintendo and Rare.

Well, there's a BIG one. Killing third party support and severely limiting your games can't be casually dismissed. Also having $80 games. Having NO good RPGs or fighting games is another big one. You know you have a problem if entire genres are ommitted from your system. N64 basically had good platformers and arcade-y racers. OH, THQ wrestling games too. I think Goldeneye was pretty much shit, so keep that in mind.

And the controller was terrible. Those tiny little yellow buttons and that loosy-goosy analogue stick? Just horrid.

My list would be:

1:SNES

2:Genesis

3:Playstation

4:NES

5:Playstation 2

6:Dreamcast

7:Gamecube

8:Saturn

9:N64

10: I dunno. GBA.

<haven't played much XBOX>

I like the list just because the N64 is first on it. Because it was and still is the greatest game system ever created. Someone said the N64 was overrated, well I think it is underrated and the reaction here to the list proves that.

Oh and chaos the playstation SUCKED. Get over it. It's lucky it even made the list....

How is the Dreamcast not higher. Surely it has to be higher than the fucking X-Box. I'm still surprised it got sixth, though, since I routinely question the intelligence of a lot of G4 fans and am shocked they can tie their own shoes.

10) Game Boy

9) X-Box

8) Saturn

7) N64

6) Playstation

5) Genesis

4) PS2

3) NES

2) Dreamcast

1) SNES

I love the N64 as much as anyone, but the way it was designed and marketed did a great deal of perhaps irreparable damage to Nintendo. Still, 5, 6 and 7 on my list, I wasn't sure about, and you could probably move any of those around with each other.

I'm not big on handhelds, but the Game Boy deserves to be in there somewhere, and I wasn't sure what I could replace it with since the Gamecube certainly isn't deserving and I have limited experience with everything else.

God, my cat is smarter than those morons. I think Game Boy should be number 1 because it was one of the big things that made Nintnedo a good company. The only reason that I and alot of people I know watch that channel is because of Morgan Webb. Even then, I can see her in every FHM.

There are two reasons right there. Not to even mention overpricing the games that *were* released, and not packaging a game in the system right off the bat. It took awhile before they learned that lesson. I was working in Best Buy when the N64 got released in 95, and people were *highly* upset that the system cost as much as it did, *then* they had to spend an extra 80-100 bucks for a game, because SMW was not packaged with the system. When Nintendo actually *did* package a game with the system, it was months after the Christmas season. They sold pretty well regardless, because people were hungry for the next big thing. Customers would ask me to choose between the PS1 and the N64 a lot, and although I would still leave the choice to them, I always picked the PS1.

I couldn't play a lot of N64 games because that piece of shit controller would frustrate me to no end. I just could not get accustomed to it. Hell, the GC controller is light-years better and I *still* have issues with it. I was ranting and raving about the PS1 controller and how crappy it was for fighting games until the third party controllers came out, however

So yes, it was a decent gaming system, but overrated because of the games that were developed for it. Sony had them by the short hairs even back then.

And yes, the Game Boy should be in the top 5, because THAT was a revolutionary product, period. People could not get enough of it when it first came out.

I just picked up a Dreamcast with 5 games, a vmu, and 3 controllers for $30. I really regretted getting rid of mine years ago.

I am seriously considering buying a Saturn, just to have Alpha 2 and a few other games. None of the emus I have found work correctly.

Don't be mad because you're precious ps1 and all it's crappy rpgs(and that's ALL it had over the n64) lost yet again to the mighty N64.

Your.

PS1 also had the fighting games Nintendo didn't. And the third-party support. Give it up.

No Atari?...

The Atari has just been so completely eclipsed that it isn't really relevant or worth including beyond an honourable mention and a pat on the back. Not to mention the ugly stigma of being associated with the crash and indirectly causing it.

When that happened it handed Nintendo everything on a silver platter, allowing them to reshape the gaming industry, with all games afterwards being crafted in their image. Atari wrote themselves out for good, despite futile attempts here and there to revive themselves. Even the 7800, released a couple years after the NES, just couldn't compare (though it was also years old technology, since it had been delayed and was sitting on shelves). I truthfully consider the Famicom/NES to be the true start of the industry, with Atari and others of its ilk being aberrations in a sort of Before Nintendo chronology.

That's a sad smiley, not a mad one. You've been here this long and you don't even know that?

The fun part was when the system released (delayed for months and months might I add) with 2 games and you had to wait 5 fucking months for another decent game to come along. Then 3 more months and you had Blast Corps and Star fox. Maybe an addition 5 more months for Goldeneye. And then nothing else until like November of NEXT YEAR when Zelda came out. What made it even funnier is just how many people biased to N64 would brag about how much those games sold. It was hilarious! They couldn't seem to grasp that the reason their sales were so good and they were on top of the charts for so long was because no one had anything else to buy. Even Mortal Kombat Trilogy and Cruisin USA were selling a million copies. Yet third parties still for the most part stayed away. (That's when you know you have a badly designed system.)

Neo-Geo at the minimum, is an exception to your rule. Gamecube's situation can also be stretched enough to apply here.

Neo Geo games sold millions of copies, even the crappy ones? That's what I meant. Anything made on the n64 sold like crazy in 96 and 97, and third parties STILL kept making games for Sony. N64's hardware was that much of a pain in the ass. Cartridges didn't help either.

Knock the N64 down to #7 and there's my list. Outside of the wrestling titles and multi-player battles in Goldeneye, I never really cared for the N64.

I've got 4 Atari Jaguars and a 3DO, yeah. I still play my 64 more than anyother system, however NES belongs at the top of the list.

Oh my god, I said you're instead of your in a sentence, a dark day for me to be sure. Thank you so much for correcting my spelling error. I am in your debt good sir.

I would argue that Super Smash Brothers was the best fighter on either system, so that was good enough on that front for the 64. And while Sony had more third party support, Nintendo itself and the second parties like Rare MORE than made up for it.

And to go further with what gwil said, no old system is played more than the N64. If people are getting together to play games and they aren't playing on the PS2, the X-Box, or the GC, then they are playing an N64. People go back and play No Mercy or Revenge or Goldeneye or Mario Kart or Conker, they don't however put in Virtua Fighter 2 or Romance of the Three Kingdoms 3 or aything else from the ps1. I know lots of people who to this day still plug in the 64 from time to time and play something. I know not a soul who puts on old ps1 games anymore.
