Due to Raynor apparently extremely liking Screamin' Jay Hawkins (Who could kick that British loser Screamin Lord Sutch's ass despite me having never heard anything by Sutch) song "Whistlin' Past the Graveyard", and also since there've been a fair few folk here that have showed me music (And other things) I really like, I figure there are enough people here with enough varied tastes (Well, kinda) that we should be able to recommend some good music, books, movies, and so forth to each other. Or whatever. Le bourte.

Musicings:

- Screamin' Jay Hawkins: "Whistlin' Past the Graveyard", "I Put a Spell on You", "There's Something Wrong With You"

- Cab Calloway: Everything he ever did in the history of the universe.

- MC Abdominal: "Abcapella", "I'm Good", "Vicious Battle Raps", "Slow and Deliberate", "The Hit Song"

Bookulations:

- Toby Young: "How to Lose Friends and Alienate People"

- Ken Follet: Anything of his is good.

- Tom Stoppard: "Arcadia", "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead".

- Douglas Copeland: "Microserfs"

Ambulatory images:

- "Stalag 17"

- "Scotland, PA"

- "Rabbit-Proof Fence"

- "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (I wouldn't be surprised if this was a MST3K movie, but, it's got a young Pat Boone, and a big weird Icelandic guy with a pet goose. So, basically, Frost)

Descriptions/summaries available upon request.

So, yeah. Tell us/me/whoever or something what you like. Or you know, the bus.

Music

I don't know many of those "You probably haven't heard of them" bands, I'm afraid... mostly, my taste is pretty run of the mill. Green Day, Wallflowers, Radiohead, Counting Crows, Everclear, Metallica, then a whole mess of game and anime music. Any bands outside of there, I only know one or two songs by...

Still, I'll list a few of my current favorite songs (they change from minute to minute):

The Arcade Fire - Power's Out

The Eels - Grace Kelly Blues

Everclear - Misery Whip

Green Day - Hitchin' a Ride

Rev. Horton Heat - Loco Gringos Like a Party

Rob Dougan - Chateau

Screamin' Jay Hawkins - Whistling Past the Graveyard (Thank you, 'Drea)

Wallflowers - One Headlight (never ever ever gets old)

For the love of God, pick up some ROH DVD's. All of you.

Yeah, and although it's a poor substitute, now that TNA is freely available there's no excuse not to catch either airing on Saturday or Monday. At the very least it should help you visualize some of those uncommon moves some people have in their stats.

Even I'm picking up ROH DVDs now and I've never been a massive fan.

While you're at it, pick up some older (like, 2003/2004) IWA Mid South tapes. I'd guesstimate that roughly 50-60% of the current ROH roster got their first big breaks in the IWA or first taste of anything near national exposure. From Shelley to Punk, Delirious to Castagnoli, Punk and Cabana. Also, CHIKARA is great if you want a laugh and you aren't fussy about watching Lucha.

Neither a Book, nor a Movie, nor a Music, my suggestion is nonetheless better than everything mentioned so far. In fact, it's the best thing ever to exist.

You play as the guy in my avatar and you collect computer chips. And your life is changed profoundly.

Also, listen to more Muse.

Seconded.

I wanted freedom, bound and restricted

I tried to give you up, but I'm addicted

Now that you know I'm trapped, sense of elation

You'd never dream of breaking this fixation...

You will squeeze the life out of me, Janus.

Don't bury it, though.

I'll third it. Such a great read. Dont worry man, it does all make sense in the end...it just has the whole metaphysical section in the middle.

Snow Crash was doubly amazing for me as I'm a sumerian mythology hobbyist, so it became that much more engrossing :)

Seconded on both, as Pratchett is love (Death FTW). And I haven't been able to find one anywhere, but has Song of Ice and Fire got a fourth book out yet? It's one of the many serieses that I haven't completed yet.

A few recommendations rthat everyone will ignore anyway, so I actually contribute to the thread.

Yes it is. i have it and have just this moment started reading it. :D

I second 'Otherland', btw, although I never got around to reading the last book. It's a great series from what I've seen though.

Reading: Kurt Vonnegut, namely Slaughterhouse-Five and Cat's Cradle.

Listening: Jeff Buckley. Oh man. For starters, try "Last Goodbye", "Grace", and "Hallelujah". A little over the top sometimes, maybe, but great stuff nonetheless.

Viewing: Me and You and Everyone We Know is an indie film that's been getting a lot of praise. Should be checked out merely for the oddness factor. Five-year-old black boy cybering about pooping back and forth turning on a thirty-year-old? Enough said.
