Stupidest/Worst/Most Offensive Smackdown (Special)

Recommended Posts

Let me repeat my DVDVR comments here. I didn't watch this (and in fact hardly watch WWE at all for reasons seen here and more), but god, they waited *two weeks* before using Eddie as a template for bad storylines? At least they waited two years after Over The Edge before they spoofed it with that mess with Chyna at Royal Rumble '01 (which led to a long series of OTE selljobs by announcers whenever an "OMIGOD this is REAL LIFE" injury angle happens...from Rock being crushed in the ambulance all the way to Stacy barely taking a chairshot). That doesn't even count 2000, when in a morbid coincidence, The Rock asked HART TRAINEE Chris Benoit if he'd attack him from the rafters (which is stretching, HOPEFULLY Rock has some integrity and meant no malice by the faux pas).

Geez, at least Vince Russo never used real-life deaths in any of his work, no matter how bad it got. Actually, more and more I am making peace with my quibbles about his "Crash TV" the more I hear about what goes on in WWE now.

And from what I've read, this has nothing to do with Rey, it's just to get heat on Orton/UT. So yeah, wow. Just wow.

Somehow I knew that after the mourning was over, Eddie's death would mean nothing to these people. Just brush themselves off, go on their usual lowlife ways. THIS is what Phil Mushnick had a point about. Not everyone will fess up on this one, though, mostly due to the "HE HATEZ RASSLIN! MUSHDICK MUST DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111111oneoneone11111!!!!!" thing.

He had Kanyon take that dive off the top of the cage at Slamboree at the same arena Owen died in just a year later.

How many times has the Undertaker died?

1994

- Ten men killed him at the Royal Rumble.

1996

- He was buried alive by Mankind, Paul Bearer, and others.

1998

- He was put into a casket by Kane and the casket was set on fire.

- He was buried alive by Stone Cold Steve Austin.

2002

- He was thrown through the Smackdown! stage by The Big Show.

2003:

- He was buried by McMahon and Kane.

2004

- He put into a hearse by Heidenriech and Paul Heyman. The hearse was then smashed.

2005

- He was put into a casket by Randy Orton and then Orton proceeded to set the casket on fire.

- He was put onto Eddie Guerrero's lowrider by Randy Orton. Orton then proceeded to back the lowrider into a the pyro machine and it exploded.

What about when Vince fired him in late 99? You know, the transition between dead man and biker. I think that could be considered a death angle.

Aha. Sorry for that oversight. Still, was it proven that he did so when he knew perfectly well where he was? Or that it would so obviously be a reference to Owen dying? So technically his death may not have inspired this angle. Maybe more like wrong place, wrong time.

To add to the class that is WWE, from wwe.com...

"After knocking The Phenom out with tire iron shots to the head, Orton left Undertaker’s prone body dangling off the truck of the Eddie Guerrero memorial lowrider. He then jumped into the driver’s seat and drove the vehicle in reverse through the SmackDown lighted display and into the electrical apparatus behind it. The stage erupted into a fiery explosion that engulfed the lowrider and Undertaker."

The Eddie Guerrero memorial lowrider.

I'm sure Eddie is howling in the afterlife.

How could he not know where he was in he wrote that angle? It was a bad angle as it was, but doing it in the very same arena is what made it in bad taste.

You know, to be perfectly honest here, the folks at the WWE were closer to Eddie than any of us. If they're cool with it, I don't see why anyone else here has to get their panties in a knot. Seriously, get over it. Get over yourselves. Quit bitching over a FUCKING TV SHOW. How does this affect your life? God, the WWE honored Eddie Guerrero with pure class and everyone just forgets about it. This is what Eddie would have wanted. If this angle can help benefit his friends in any way, don't you think he'd be all for it? Yeah, that's what I thought. There's nothing here to complain about. Fags.

By his "friends," did you mean Rey? If so, like I said, this was more about Orton/UT than him. And with all due respect, I could see how it feels like Eddie is being treated no different from Big Show's "dad" or Al Wilson (i.e. just a character dying) too.

While I'm here...re: HTQ: I see what you meant about the Kanyon thing. It is actually on par with the OTE selljobs in that no one is mentioned by name specifically. I guess I take the latter more seriously, as it cheapens the real emotions of the time.

I didn't watch the show but the 'explosion' involve the Smackdown set? Maybe they have a new set waiting for next week. Kinda like when Rhyno speared Jericho into the original SD set and the new debuted afterwards.

THANK YOU!!!

The segment was hilarious, Eddie ties or not. My friends and I were laughing during almost the whole thing, and when they went through the set, my one friend who never swears busts out with a "Holy shit!". Good times.

As for the reasoning... Eddie probably wanted his lowrider creamated after his death. Randy was obviously helping him fullfill his wishes. :D

Seriously people, like RRR says, get over it. It's been said a million times, but it rings true... if you don't like the stuff on WWE, DON'T WATCH IT!!!

This SD special looks to be a fitting conclusion to November 2005: the most fucked up month in recent WWE memory.

I don't think Rudo was being perfectly honest at all! That didn't read like a Rudo post

I just watched the clips of it on WWE.com and honestly I didn't find it that offensive. I found it stupid in that we're once again supposed to believe that a) Taker lived through that and b) Orton won't go to jail for that. Plus those explosions were terribly cheesy, but I wasn't offended because of Eddy's death.

What? Taker is a zombie. I mean, it's his gimmick.

Taker hasn't been a zombie since like '97 when he "tattooed" that tear on his face and started acting more human...don't ask me how he came back to life though.

But, he (as biker-Taker) was buried in 2003 and [kayfabe] rose from the dead in 2004, and has been zombie-Taker ever since.[/kayfabe]

All this shows me is that WWE really wants to get Orton over as a heel, resorting to using a dead wrestler's gimmick to get him heat. Not even going to debate the tastelessness of it, it was just dumb. If they have to piss off the fans by using the name of a dead wrestler everyone liked to get heat on this guy, then WWE has a more serious problem than "offending" Eddie fans.

Now if people don't start super hating on Orton then we'll just see worse and worse every week as the WWE desperately tries to get the fans to hate Orton with a passion

not just the "What's that dork doing on my TV" kinda hate

funny how they got the opposite problem on Raw - they're throwing everything at the fan to get the people to go mega-monster positive for Cena

"The WWE - never one for giving up on a bad idea... as long as it's Vince's idea" *thumbs up*

Boo Orton now or it'll just get worse - mark my words.

I 'luckily' caught this part of the Special ... and was more offended that Rey would ask Eddie for help than I was that they used his low-rider to 'kill' the Undertaker.

Blame McMahon all you want, but Rey could have very easily said "I'll drive the lowrider to the ring to help the Orton/Taker angle, but I will not call out my dead friend's name during the match." I'm not sure how serious/sarcastic RRR was with his "the wrestlers were closer to Eddie than you are" post ... but truthfully, if someone like Rey was willing to participate, we shouldn't crucify McMahon for doing it.

I thought we turned a corner a few years ago... Am i wrong? I thought that we as wrestling fans tuned into a wrestling show to see wrestlers wrestle, I think Cornette said that. I thought WWE started to promote WRESTLING not this dumb soap opera. Maybe I'm wrong, but i remember watching RAW once and i wasn't treated like a 6 year old. Maybe I'm mistaken.

I don't find the spot offensive (I didn't see it, i don't think we got it in the UK), but I can understand those who do, my problem with it was that it was just so dumb. When I was 8, i would have loved it. "Oh my god! Undertaker is dead! But he will not rest in peace!" Wait a minute, I said that over 10 years ago and it's still happening.

I don't.

Doesn't make their scummy business or creative moves any more palatable though.

Here, either way you look at it, Eddie was a real person, and he is being treated no better than Katie F'N Vick, in that they feel they can toss his name and memory out there whenever they want.

I wonder if Vicky and Eddie's daughters had a good chuckle or if they thought everything was fine, all in the name of getting an angle heated up?

Seriously, I wonder what Vicky and Co. thought.

So, I guess the question is "how big does a car wreck get before people turn away?" You'd think the guy with a severed leg would be enough.
