NFL Playoffs

Recommended Posts

The Bengals slowly turning back into the Bungles without Palmer. Just everything that could go wrong in a half went wrong in the second half for them. From their line forgetting what blitz pick-up is to being completely unable to snap the ball.

Palmer has two torn ligaments according to ESPN Radio.

And I'm glad Pittsburgh won, no bye week excuses this time for Pats fans should Indy/NE meet again.

Great stuff from John Clayton.

It was a chippy game from the start. After numerous plays, players from both teams pushed and shoved each other. The trash talking was almost out of control at times. The Steelers thought the Bengals were too excited about making the playoffs and being considered an up-and-coming team.

In the locker room, the Steelers twisted the Bengals "Who Dey" cheer.

"We called it 'We Dey,'" Ward said. "We Dey put their ass out of the tournament. It was a great day today."

Porter remembered Chad Johnson saying that the torch had been passed in the AFC North when the Bengals beat the Steelers in Pittsburgh Dec. 4. He remembers Johnson saying the change was like going from black-and-white television to color TV.

"I'm going to send him the new plasma black-and-white TV," Porter said. "Hopefully, he's going to get the chance to watch us in our playoff game in Indianapolis."

Even in his moment of despair, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis tried to paint a better picture in light of the circumstances. Palmer blew out his knee. Chris Henry suffered a knee injury. The Bengals fell apart in the second half.

"It's unfortunate," Lewis said. "We're not going to sit here and baby and cry like their quarterback did."

Lewis was taking a shot at a Roethlisberger comment made earlier this year about low hits to his knee. Face it, these guys don't like each other. Now, Lewis has to get Palmer through a tough offseason of rehab, and get his team ready to fight again next year.

What a game to watch. Both of those teams just plain hated each other; it's not surprising that the Bengals folded, seeing how classless their leader is. That kind of whiny, mincing shit is exactly why Cincy isn't playing next week. All season long, Lewis did jack shit to stop his team from premature jocularity, as Rich Eisen would say. Not once did Lewis fine his players for talking about how the "torch had been passed" or generally disrespecting their opponents week in and week out. What better way to motivate a team than to act like a bunch of kids? The Bengals just flat out weren't ready for the playoffs. It's sad that Palmer didn't get to play the game and it's going to be quite a challenge for him to be ready for camp next year. But, at the same time, shit happens. That's the NFL for you. Had Roethlisberger been healthy all year, this team wins the division and possibly isn't playing this week.

My excuse was that the Patriots were absolutely descimated by injuries, but whatever- Indy has to get through Pittsburgh first and the Patriots have to get through Denver- let's just focus on that before we start going there.

Hold on, nah might as well be "classless" FUCK YOU

But good luck next week against Indy.

It's pretty classless to crow and boast about winning a game when the best player on the opposing team goes out on the second play after scorching your D for 66 yards. EDIT: Actually, it's natural that they would whoop it up and be proud, but insulting the Bengals is classless.

I really like Hines Ward, but his comment leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

I like Cincy a WHOLE lot, 2nd favorite team, but I also like the Steelers. However, if my team (the Seahawks) were to hypothetically beat the Colts in the SB after Manning blew his knee out on the second play, I would celebrate, but I wouldn't want any Hawks players to trash the Colts. Neither would I say the Hawks were better than the Colts. The Bengals played really well for missing their best player, and IMO the 2nd best QB in the NFL.

It's a joy to watch Bettis play, though.

Most Pats fans used the brutal string of injuries as the excuse, not the bye week. The timing of the bye week was pretty much secondary in the excuses list.

The ironic thing is that most Pats fans wanted Indy this weekend instead of in the AFC Championship game (pending both teams winning this weekend, of course). So most fans wanted the Colts immediately after the bye, even though that's the way it worked in the regular season, too.

It's a joy to watch Bettis play, though.
Now that he's older and banged up it is. When he was a younger, fatter idiot doing his little dance after a 3 yard run, it wasn't as joyful. Count me among those looking forward to him hanging up the spikes.

More Bengals whining in the postgame:

Bengals receivers Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh refused to believe the better team won the game. "No, no," Johnson said, shaking his head when asked whether the Steelers were the better team. Houshmandzadeh went a step further and said the Steelers will lose to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. He also said the referees were working against the Bengals. "They want Indianapolis and New England in the AFC Championship Game," Houshmandzadeh said. "You can plead your case with stuff, but it wasn't going to change. I figured they'd let us decide the game." Houshmandzadeh was upset that several pass-interference calls weren't made against the Steelers secondary.

You act like I'm playing for them.

With all the times that people say "we" when talking about the teams that they root for, it's not surprising that someone would act like other posters play for the teams.

(I don't think that you're guilty of saying "we", though, Dr T.)

Is there EVER a wide receiver who feels he received the proper number of pass interference calls.

Just once in a postgame press conference, someone like chad johnson should just come out and say

"You know, those referees were spot on today in identifying pass interference. Got to hand it to them."

:P

The Steelers thugged it up a bit in that game, but when you're in the playoffs and playing a divisional opponent, you better bring your mean streak.

What I found funny was despite all the hitting and injuries, personal fouls were called on that lame "late hit" to Ranal El and Troy P's ball-throwing incident.

Count me among those looking forward to him hanging up the spikes.

Count me among those looking forward to a certain poster calling it quits, too.

Actually, I agree that it is annoying to see him dance a jig after those 3-yard runs. Almost as annoying as those "Bus" wordplays.

The Bus got a flat.

Everyone get on the Bus.

Put some snow tires on the Bus.

The wheels on the Bus go round and round.

This Bus is headed to the Super Bowl (not).

The Bus is running on a full tank.

Christ almighty.

I've probably said it a few times, and I know I've said it in real life when I'm not thinking. But, nonetheless, it's sort of funny to take a step back and look at those type of comments, which run rampant on team-specific boards. I read a board on stillers.com, and there are plenty of Bengals, Browns, Ravens, etc. fans on there that, after they lose, say stuff like "Good luck next week!" I mean, what the fuck? Good luck finding a seat at the bar? Good luck trying to get a BJ during the game?

While I won't debate the wisdom of players mentioning it in the post game interviews, I will say that I watched every down of the Steelers-Bengals game and there was some sketchy officiating all around. It was almost like they couldn't decide to stick to the "Let it be decided on the field" edict from the NFL higher-ups", or go with "These are the playoffs, we need to call everything." Very frustrating for both teams I'm sure.

On the Palmer injury: I don't think Kimo meant to blow out Palmer's knee. No way. But it should have been a penalty. He was not blocked into Palmer, he scrambled after him on the ground and hit him below the waist a full two seconds after the ball had left his hand.

I read Yahoo's football guy this morning, and he said that even with Palmer in the game, the Bengals would have lost. Well, maybe. But it certainly would have been closer. Kitna is a good QB, but the timing routes and deep routes (which the Bengals live on) get totally screwed when you change QB's on the fly.

Same ol' 8-8 Bungles we've all known for the past 5 years.

Did you watch the same 11-5 season I did? These are not the "Bungles". Not even a little. Next season, assuming they address some of the defensive issues in the offseason and Carson Palmer is able to rehab and be ready for kickoff, this should be a good team again.

Here's the thing:

I don't even mind it if he complains a bit about officiating. If it was my team, I'd chalk it up to emotions and move on to the offseason. But, HJ Housamnadzedah takes it a step further and talks about some conspiracy bullshit about how the league wants to set up a Pats-Colts rematch in the AFCC and needs to keep the stellar superbengals down since they clearly are the only ones that can beat the Colts and well, duh, if they had done this and this and this they wouldn't have been kept down by the...

...it's ridiculous. He needs to just shut up. And Marvin Lewis needs to not encourage his players to give everyone else bulletin board material.

Even though the Patriots would have faced Indy in the next round had Cincy won the game. Ookie Dookie.

So the powers that be, instead of having the Indy/NE matchup next week, want to wait another round where Indy and NE both risk the possibility of losing? Gotcha.

I'm not defending TJ's comments. I'm just saying that the officiating was not the best I've seen and it was on both sides. There were questionable calls all around. As a Bengals fan, I feel like more of them went against them, but I know we got away with at least a couple of things.

Besides, I think it's unfair to judge these guys based on what they said a half hour after a playoff loss in their first winning season, well, ever. Add in their leader and franchise QB got taken out after two plays and I think they have a right to be upset and frustrated by the loss. Frankly, I'd be worried about their competitiveness if they weren't.

It's understandable they were pissed off right after the game. And believe me, even though I'm from Shittsburgh I don't consider myself a Steeler fan just because they're the hometown team.

It seemed to me the Steelers bullied the Bengals and eventually pulled away -- losing Palmer didn't hurt either. I feel bad for Kitna because I lived in SW Ohio back in 00-03 and the fans were relentless. Too bad if the Bengals didn't have Kitna, they wouldn't have had a chance of winning once Carson got hurt.

You, know, you're right! When the Bengals lose their best player and have to change things out on the fly, they're quite mediocre!

I'm sure it wasn't a blow losing the best QB statistically this season on the second play. His stats weren't in any way indicative of reality. He just has good WRs. THat 66 yd pass on his first play? Lucky. He hadn't been doing that all season.

Asshole.
