Super Bowl XL

Recommended Posts

The little box in the bottom right corner on ESPN News says the Super Bowl starting time is 2:30 pm? That can't be right?

The hype shows start @ 2:30, which occur on ESPN and ABC. So naturally they are promoting that first.

I want the Steelers to win, because seriously, who cares about the Seahawks?

That's how I see it

Plus I can like Ben R as long as he keeps the shaggy hair and beard combo. I like it a lot better than the military look he's been sporting for the most part.

1990 doesn't count because of the bestest game ever. 51-3.

The last hurrah?

How the hell can the AFC's 6 seed be favored over the NFC's 1 seed?

I could see maybe if the Seahawks had played bad in both of their playoff games, but they played extremely well in both, especially today against Carolina.

Possibly because Pittsburgh is an experienced team with basically the same personnel that went 15-1 last year when they had the #1 seed, and that they went on the road this year in the playoffs and beat, while never trailing, the AFC's #3, #1, and #2 seed. That's REALLY fucking impressive. Seattle's been impressive, and I have been saying that they're good enough to get to the big game all season long. These really are the two best teams in the league going at it.

Could be an excellent game, with Seattle able to play the "We get no respect" card quite well. I have a couple reasons to cheer for the Steelers, one being that they'd be my favorite team if it weren't for Green Bay (so I guess you could call them my AFC team, but I like the Dolphins as well for hometown purposes), but another being that I really, really don't want to see Hasselbeck and Holmgren with a Super Bowl win.

Anyone have a feeling that Bettis will suffer the same fate that Roger Clemens did a couple years ago at the all-star game in Houston where he had that horrid first inning and looked like a total loser?

The whole Roger comes home after his "retirement" to start in the ASG is almost similar to Bettis playing at home after contemplating retirement in his final game.

Not that i'd ever wish it on Bettis.

Well, maybe more people will care about them if they win a SB. Meanie.

Not really. Does anyone care about Baltimore Ravens any more now then they did before they won the superbowl? No, win or lose, no one cares about the Seahawks.

People have been saying for the last two years that any of the AFC's top teams can beat any of the NFC teams. Now, we get a chance to prove it. AFC's #6 vs. NFC's #1.

This is stupid. The Steelers beat the top 3 seeds in the conference. They are the best team in the AFC.

Plus, two of the games they lost in the regular season had Tommy Maddox at the helm. He sucks.

Seattle showed me something today....but the Steelers knocked off the Bengals, Colts AND Broncos in three consecutive weeks. It'll be close, but my preliminary prediction will be Steelers 26-21

Of course then you'll wind up dealing with this:

"Whoooooo! Seahawks won the Super Bowl! Whoooooo!"

"So what'd you think of Shaun Alexander's performance in the SB?"

"...Shaun Alexander? Who's that?

....Whoooooooo!"

I keep getting this sinking feeling that for all the hype Matt Hasselbeck has been getting, he's going to be exposed as not an "Top Tier QB".

This is the guy that once called the fact they we're going to score, then immediately threw a game winning touchdown.... to a Green Bay Packer.

This should be a really great matchup. Despite their reputation, the Steelers have been making it through the playoffs by throwing the ball, but they'll have a tall order to throw against Marcus Trufant and the Seattle secondary, which completely shut down the Carolina passing offense. The Seahawks have the MVP in Alexander, but he'll be running against one of the best run defenses in the league, with defensive personnel that loves to lay a hit on somebody.

I think that Matt Hasselbeck is going to be the real key to this game - if he can connect with his receivers consistently against a Steelers secondary that has been known to be weak in the past, they may be able to hold their own and pull out the win. If Porter, Farrior, and Superfly get after Hasselbeck and force him to make bad decisions, Seattle may have a long day ahead of them.

I'd take the Steelers, but it could be damn close. Overtime close, even. I'll say 26-23 in a nailbiter.

I don't follow the NFL like I follow college football, and so I decided to root for the Steelers whenever I caught their games once they drafted UVA's Heath Miller this year. Worked out nicely.

This should be a pretty good game. The Seahawks actually remind me a lot of the way the Steelers have been playing lately, with the running game providing a solid base and Hasselback making big plays spread all across the receiver corps. I wasn't impressed with them against Washington, but was very much impressed yesterday. They tore Carolina apart in every facet of the game on both sides of the ball. The Steelers--and Roethlisberger in particular--have simply been playing out of their minds for the last 6 or 7 weeks, and I think they'll pull away in the second half, leaving the Seahawks just too little room to play catch-up. The Steelers' reliance on four solid receivers (Ward, Miller, Randle El, Wilson) will be a lot harder to manage than the "stop Steve Smith!" game they were able to play yesterday. Men of Steel by maybe 7 or 10 in a very good match-up that I wouldn't be surprised to see swing the other way.

Trent Dilfer won a super-bowl. There's no real "You have to be a top tier QB, without any a history of past ineptitude" rule in regards to being a Super Bowl quarterback. You just need a strong overall team and not to force yourself into bad situations.

I hate when Trent Dilfer gets brought up in these discussions. The Ravens that year had the best defense the NFL had ever seen (yes, even better than the Monsters of the Midway) and constantly shut down any opponent that opposed them. I think they made it into the playoffs as a wildcard due to their ineptitude on offense- they went a long string of games, I forget how many, without scoring an offensive touchdown and still managing wins- that's a hell of a defense. I believe they also never gave up an offensive touchdown throughout their whole playoff run. Dilfer was really the prototypical "manage the game" QB that year, and many people have (rightfully) said that the way the Ravens won the Super Bowl that year had everyone trying to copy their same format afterwards.

I would definitely like Seattle to win, but theres no way I can be angry if Jerome Bettis gets a Superbowl win.

I'm very interested in seeing what exactly Bettis ends up doing in this Super Bowl. It seems like he's getting a lot more attention than a backup running back should be, but with Parker struggling in all the playoff games, and having a little fumble trouble added to the Bettis story, I have to wonder if they don't try and get Bettis the ball a lot more.

Well, the good news for Parker is that they'll be playing on turf, which is more conducive to his speed and quick cuts. That's not to say that he'll be successful - I'd actually argue that he's probably worn down from his first full year as a tailback - but he could certainly have a better game than the last two efforts he's turned in for these playoffs.

I loathe the Steelers, so I'll be rooting for the Seahawks, even though I don't really give a damn about the Seahawks. I like Bettis and all and would like to see him get a Super Bowl win on his last game in his hometown (I'm a sucker for storylines like that), but I don't want the Steelers to win.

The two weeks off might help willie parker more than any single player on either team. He does look tired, but I think he can be a factor with two weeks to get his legs under him.

I never root for the AFC team, but I want to see Holmgren and Hasselbeck crash and burn. Shame, 'cause Shaun Alexander's a dude I can't hate.

I'll probably end up pulling for Seattle anyway after hearing all of the ESPN drones at work say "Pittsburgh is a MUCH better team than Seattle!" as my boss said the moment I wondered aloud how the #1 seed in the NFC could possibly be the underdog against the #6 AFC team. Getting to actually watch Seattle the last couple of weeks instead of just seeing their numbers has been enough to convince me they're really quite good.

Good lord, I don't think it bears repeating enough times why the #1 seed in the NFC is an underdog against the #6 in the AFC. The Steelers beat the top three seeded teams in their conference three weeks in a row, on the road, in the playoffs to get to the Super Bowl, while never trailing in any of those games. How could you not be favored against an NFC team that slowly beat the #6 seed in the NFC and decisively squashed the #5 in the championship game, both at home?

What people have been saying all year about Seattle's opposition not looking altogether too impressive is sort of true, and that they've been lucky in the matchups they've gotten, but I still think they're a good enough team to deserve being in the championship game. Seattle would've crushed Denver, New England, Cincinatti, and would have probably beaten Indianapolis a second time in a game that mattered.

EDIT: My mistake, they trailed at halftime at Cincinnati. They never did after that, though.

Oh yeah, I'll definitely end up pulling for Seattle in this one, becoming increasingly anti-Steeler as the hype continues. I hate these years when the only reason I have to root for either team is being sick of hearing about one of them.

In order,

A). Bettis playing final game in home-town

C). Cower's "SBXXX" redemption

D). Holmgreen winning it without Favre

E). How many different ways to spell Big Ben's last name wrong

F). How cold Detroit is

B). Hasselbeck's hot sister-in-law (It's not on ABC, right?)

Features I think they should do (but they probably won't):

- Windsor, ON and how big a hole it is once you go more than 2 blocks north of the riverfront. (Trust me, I've lived both 2 blocks and 5 blocks from the riverfront)

- The local casinos

- Detroit nightlife (which isn't particularly bad, although none of it is really in Detroit proper)

- Detroit strip clubs vs Windsor strip clubs.
