Dangerous A Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 Agreed on the remake take, Ripper. Hollywood is dry in the creative department. This summer, all the big movies are either sequels or remakes.
The Niggardly King Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 For anyone that saw the Honeymooners movie, does Cedric promise his wife the moon, or something of the sort? He said that they couldn't because it would have implied him hitting his wife, and the MPAA didn't like that...
Black Lushus Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 I'd pay money for a "black remake" of All In The Family starring Bernie Mac.
Ripper Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 For anyone that saw the Honeymooners movie, does Cedric promise his wife the moon, or something of the sort? He said that they couldn't because it would have implied him hitting his wife, and the MPAA didn't like that... That should have stopped production on the movie.
Special K Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 I agree with everything you said in the last post, Ripper. A Honeymooners movie starring Chris Farley and David Spade would have sucked, too. And yes, Blues Brothers 2000 was a horrible, horrible idea. I even like John Goodman a lot, but trying to replace Belushi with anyone is completely foolish. Sam with Cab Calloway. Hell, that might be the most creatively bankrupt movie ever. Didn't they add a cute kid Blues Brother? Plus, it's probably the same old Hollywood hacks writing and pitching these ideas about taking an old classic and making it 'hip and edgy' in various ways, casting someone from Kings of Comedy being only one of them. The Brady movie was probably the only remotely good one. Taking these ridiculously wholesome characters and transposing them is a decent idea, and it seemed to genuinely like the characters. Not that it was any great shakes, by any means. Shit, 100x more offensive to me than recasting an old sitcom with black actors is them shitting on Dr. Seuss with Grinch and The Cat and the Hat. Leave Dr. Seuss's books ALONE you soulless pieces of shit. I don't want fart humor in the Cat in the Hat. I think thing they haven't perverted so far is Peanuts and Calvin & Hobbes.
kkktookmybabyaway Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 He said that they couldn't because it would have implied him hitting his wife, and the MPAA didn't like that... Not belting her to the moon, but rather something lame like "Baby, I promise you the moon." And the funny thing is Gleason didn't say all that often "One of these days Alice, POW, to the moon." It was usually just "Bang/Zoom" or just "One of these days, Alice."
Damaramu Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 I'm just reminded of Futurama. "One man had a dream!" "One of these days Alice! Bang boom......." *point stoically* "to the moooooon."
AndrewTS Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 And how does Washington become the token black guy if Mr. Kotter is black!? Well, different race. A 7 foot chinese guy? Will Farrell? I'd pay money for a "black remake" of All In The Family starring Bernie Mac. That was a great In Living Color skit (I think there were more of them than one actually). Too bad it would be a PC'ed up the ass.
razazteca Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 You know who would be perfect for Washington, the token black guy from Not Another Teen Movie, Deon Richmond! As for Vinny Barbarino the guy from NUMB3Rs! For Horshack tv's Screech, Dustin Diamond For Juan Why not give it to Carlito Juan's Mother would be Sally Jesse Ralphael
buffybeast Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 http://www.tv.com/tracking/viewer.html&ref...69&ref_type=101 While this isn't nearly as egregious as last summers Honeymooners film, it's still pretty bad. Imagine the uproar in the African American community if a movie producer decided he was going to make a Sanford and Son film starring Ben and Jerry Stiller, or The Jeffersons with Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn? It really is a double standard if you ask me. While no one can predict what would happen in an alternate universe, I do believe that some people within the black community would go ape shit if a black television classic was remade with an all-white cast. This movie looks stupid.
EricMM Posted March 18, 2006 Report Posted March 18, 2006 I do suspect that there would be a lot of uproar, but I agree w/ Ripper that a lot of THIS uproar, is people complaining about black man taking the white man's movies. Ripper is right, if the demographic these days is Urban = Black, which it is, then it leads that Urban movies should consist of at LEAST many black people. This cannot be Friends anymore, people.
2GOLD Posted March 18, 2006 Report Posted March 18, 2006 I think thing they haven't perverted so far is Peanuts and Calvin & Hobbes. And thankfully, they never will get their hands on Calvin and Hobbes. He has zero interest in allowing them to be turned into a tv movie or any kind of movie. Peanuts seems to be stuck in a limbo where it's not really well known who exactly owns the tv rights to the strip anymore. Once that gets sorted, you can bet they will destroy Peanuts with a live action film.
The Czech Republic Posted March 18, 2006 Report Posted March 18, 2006 Everytime a remake starring black people get made, the same stupid ass thread comes up. We get it. Them hollywood blacks need to stay in their place and leave the white folks movies alone. No, Ripper, you don't get it. It's already an urban show: it takes place in shitty 70s Brooklyn. Part of the premise was the racial mixture; if everyone's black, that's lost. You're gonna have to change all the characters, because there aren't going to be any black guys named Vinnie Barbarino. And if you don't have "Juan Epstein, the Puerto Rican Jew," then it's not even Welcome Back Kotter. It's just a film very similar to the 70s hit sitcom "Welcome Back Kotter" in which a teacher goes back to the ghetto school he graduated from. Just call it "I Done Come Back Up In This Bitch" or something the Wizard of Black I laughed really, really hard at this. "The Wiz," for the record. Oh by the way, Sanford and Son is a black remake of a white show: like a bunch of Norman Lear shows, it started in the UK. Sanford was played by Paul McCartney's very clean grandfather from A Hard Day's Night

Ice Cube is playing Kotter which is apparently wrong because he is black. Thats why this thread is stupid. Cube playing Kotter is wrong because Welcome Back Kotter shouldn't me made into a film, and I don't give a shit if John Travolta is playing Vinne Barbarino coming back to the old school to help the new kids. FUCK THAT SHIT. Leave the show alone.
Special K Posted March 18, 2006 Report Posted March 18, 2006 I was mulling this over, and it's definitely true there's been a scarcity of good black (OMG I mean urban) TV shows. Has there ever been a good TV drama where most of the characters are black? Maybe OZ, which is undeniably excellent, but hardly seems like a good example.
Slayer Posted March 18, 2006 Report Posted March 18, 2006 Has there ever been a good TV drama where most of the characters are black? Maybe OZ
Special K Posted March 18, 2006 Report Posted March 18, 2006 Seriously, that's the only example I can think of. I was pretty much trying to make the point that the best drama I've seen with a large black cast is OZ, which is hardly enforcing positive stereotypes. Plus the best characters on that show were white, except Sayid. I mean there's Homicide, which is one of the best shows I've ever, ever seen, which had Andre Braugher and Yaphet Kotto, both of whom were the shit. But there's a ton of excellent TV dramas out there, and none with a primarily black cast. Thief will be good, because Andre Braugher is the fucking man.
The Czech Republic Posted March 18, 2006 Report Posted March 18, 2006 Unless Ice cube is going to go all Eddie Murphy and play all the parts, I don't see where it became a all black cast. FUCK THAT SHIT. Leave the show alone. It said "urban remake," so I figured that since "urban" has curiously and dubiously become a euphemism for "black," that it would adapted for an all-black cast.
Special K Posted March 18, 2006 Report Posted March 18, 2006 God, after that out of context quote, I should probably just call "GI Bro" the pinnacle of black filmmaking. If you're a kraut/ He'll take you out.
Failed Bridge Posted March 18, 2006 Report Posted March 18, 2006 somehow I knew even before clicking on the link to this thread that there would be a tantrum or two by Ripper. I'm not excluding Dama because he's white, he's just on ignore.
Black Lushus Posted March 18, 2006 Report Posted March 18, 2006 jesus christ....wake up Ripper...when whitey says "Urban Film", he's not talking about a buncha poor jews and Puerto Ricans.
Big Ol' Smitty Posted March 18, 2006 Report Posted March 18, 2006 They're actually making a remake of "Blossom" with an all Native American cast.
The Czech Republic Posted March 18, 2006 Report Posted March 18, 2006 Are they gonna call it "Welcome Black Kotter"? And isn't Kotter a Jewish surname?
Special K Posted March 18, 2006 Report Posted March 18, 2006 Oddly enough, various rappers are pretty good actors. I mean, comparing them to any other no-talent celebrity. Often they just play themselves, but: Mos Def is good, Ice Cube is good, mostly comedically. Snoop is good, but he just plays himself. Ice T is just a fucking good actor. Ludacris was good in the pivotal scene in Hustle & Flow.
Special K Posted March 18, 2006 Report Posted March 18, 2006 And Ripper, get the fuck off your high horse. Callin' people racists is akin to calling them the devil.
Damaramu Posted March 18, 2006 Report Posted March 18, 2006 There's nothing racist about wanting something to be faithful to the original. And if it is Ice Cube then he'd better have a big fucking afro and moustache and not give us that dumbass look he gives in every movie when he's confused, angry, happy, sad.......well the only look he has. That one where he squints his eyes and scrunches his face up.
Ravenbomb Posted March 18, 2006 Report Posted March 18, 2006 odds that Cedric the Entertainer will play the principal?
The Czech Republic Posted March 18, 2006 Report Posted March 18, 2006 Can't wait to see what kinds of uncle jokes Ice Cube will bring to the table.
Dr. Zaius Posted March 19, 2006 Report Posted March 19, 2006 I couldn't care less if a black person is given a part originally played by a white actor. The only thing flashing through my mind at this point is the excellent Reservoir Dogs-themed "Welcome Back Kotter" parody from SNL where Travolta hosted. That was probably 10x funnier than this movie will be.
