Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted September 30, 2008 Ok, I saw Choke again (paid for it this time, which I felt good about, because I really like the movie...) but there was nobody in the theater, like 6 people total. Two showings all day. That's such a bummer! Trust me on this, it's really good, even though a lot is omitted from the book. For me, it's the perfect date movie. I hope it finds an audience on dvd, because to be honest, it's not really the most mainstream movie. I know a lot of people found Fight Club easy to relate to, but who relates to Choke? Well... people like me. Lots of deleted scenes, I'm hoping for. Oh yeah, they also showed the trailer for Notorious, the Biggie Smalls biopic. Hell yeah. Maztinho 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2008 A Beat update, I watched Dolls which he directed. Holy shit does that have the most bittersweet moment I think I've ever seen on film. I went on a Western rampage, so I drifted from Beat for a bit. But I'm definitely going to check out some of Jingus' recommendations.

Jingus 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2008 http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5gOvWdPX...MqzaAwD93HBDTO0 Going to be quite the picket line Jesus, what a bunch of whining syphilitic twats. Check out some of these golden quotes: "The movie portrays blind people as monsters, and I believe it to be a lie," said Maurer, president of the Baltimore-based National Federation of the Blind. "Blindness doesn't turn decent people into monsters." The movie reinforces inaccurate stereotypes, including that the blind cannot care for themselves and are perpetually disoriented, according to the NFB. The NFB began planning the protests after seven staffers, including Danielsen, attended a screening of the movie in Baltimore last week. The group included three sighted employees. "Everybody was offended," Danielsen said. "There are different kinds of blindness. There's 2 billion people that are starving in the world," Meirelles said. "This is happening. It doesn't need a catastrophe. It's happening, and because there isn't an event like Katrina, we don't see." So they apparently truly believe that a massive epidemic which suddenly deprives normally-sighted people of their vision would somehow not cause panic? Shut the fuck up and go sell your cup of pencils, you point-missing bastards. (And how did the blindos who couldn't see the movie they were "watching" still end up offended by it?) 2GOLD 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2008 Blindness doesn't turn ordinary people into monsters? Jesus Christ, Black Friday sales can turn ordinary people into monsters so I damn well KNOW waking up not being able to see would turn quite a few into monsters. It's such crap, like people who find out they are blind after seeing for decades are totally cool with the transition. Yes, the ones who grew up with it with a supporting family and group might have been able to deal. But the entire WORLD going blind? Who is going to keep you calm and help you realize it's not all over? Answer: NO ONE!

LivingLegendGaryColeman 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2008 That's ridiculous. The book that the movie is based on has been out for like 13 years, have they been picketing book stores. I'm never going to pick on someone strictly because of their handicaps, but this is stupid. If I see anyone picketing at a theater I go to with sunglasses and cane, I will tell them that is the coolest movie costume I have seen yet, but they don't look scary enough to be a real blind person. Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2008 Yeah, but you can do pretty much anything in a book and get away with it because no one is paying attention. What books do you know that caused controversy? Children's books, and American Psycho are the only ones I know of. Maybe Catcher in the Rye, but only because of who it was associated with later. On the other hand, I don't think the movie looks very good. Mark Ruffalo plays - what else - an eye doctor struck by blindness? Oh, the irony of it all! Still, those protesters should get hit by a flaming truck full of knives.
Jingus 0 Report post Posted October 3, 2008 Yeah, but you can do pretty much anything in a book and get away with it because no one is paying attention. Ain't that the truth. I've read countless books which included shit which would've caused riots if you'd shown it onscreen. Especially in graphic novels, come to think of it. Compare the movie version of Wanted to the original comic sometime. Or consider Preacher, which HBO was thinking of making an adaptation of, but they passed cuz it was too disturbing; this is the same channel which aired Oz. And finally, well, let's just say that whenever Watchmen finally comes out I'm fully expecting a rightwing backlash against it in this post-9/11 world. Ravenbomb 0 Report post Posted October 3, 2008 Well, a guy goes blind before Ruffalo and goes to see him. If it's contagious, it makes sense for Ruffalo to get it. By the way, the movie was just under alright. I give 'em points for trying to be fancy with the visuals by just over or under exposing, but it just didn't look that good. And a big fuck you to the movie for that ending.

RepoMan 0 Report post Posted October 3, 2008 The movie seems like it would be giving a lot of credit to regular blind people who can function in society. I know I would freak the fuck out if I suddenly became blind. I really want to see this movie because it plays on something that literally give me nightmares. It gives the actual blind a lot of credit, because average seeing Joe would be close to completely unfunctional if they lost their sight. I’m really in awe of the blind, I’d really say it amazes me how well the blind people I’ve encountered in life function so well. In all honesty I’d rather be paralyzed than try to live without sight. In such a scenario, use regular folks would be begging for advice for doing the simplest task the average blind person could do.

Without spoiling anything (it isn't a major plot development), there's a character in the movie who was blind all his life, and is referred to as "like a superhero in this place." The more I think back, the less I liked the movie. Glad I didn't pay for the ticket.

Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted October 4, 2008 I just watched Religulous. It was really good, I was expecting it to just be like, Bill Maher making fun of religion, and there is that, but it was actually done very well besides that. It had a strong message about how harmful religion is, as well as ridiculous. And that 16% of Americans are completely non-religious, a huge minority, yet they really don't speak out for their beliefs, and we should. And people who are only sort of marginally religious should take a closer look at what they're involved in. Good stuff.
Gary Floyd 0 Report post Posted October 4, 2008 "Blindness" is a letdown. It has it's moments, but it's all just so forced and underwhelming, not to mention disjointed. A serious dissapointment, especially considering my love of "City of God" and "The Constant Gardner" (especially the former.)
Ravenbomb 0 Report post Posted October 4, 2008 I'm not a fan of Maher's religious thing. I don't have a problem with making fun of religion, and a lot of organized religion especially, but a lot of times he seems to just be saying that people who are anything but athiests are idiots or crazy. Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted October 4, 2008 Well, I actually believe that, so...
Ravenbomb 0 Report post Posted October 4, 2008 *shrug* Believe what you like, it doesn't affect me one way or the other. I just don't tend to want to see movies that tell me I'm an idiot for arbitrary reasons. It's a stupid thing to be judgmental about in either direction.
Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted October 4, 2008 The movie is more for an atheistic or skeptical audience anyway. Because that's the problem, what I believe doesn't affect you one way or the other, but religious beliefs do affect me. Muslims take the brunt of it, as they should... there's also a Chassidic Jew holocaust denier. No shit.
Ravenbomb 0 Report post Posted October 4, 2008 Yeah, religion being thrust on people sucks, but it's the thrusting that's the issue, not them believing something. And the good points that Maher does make only frustrates me more. He DOES have completely valid things to say on the subject and he's a funny comedian. But then he takes those points and jokes and extrapolates them to "See? People who believe in God are so dumb!"
Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted October 4, 2008 I see where you're coming from. That actually comes up in the movie, where he'll try to talk to someone, and they're like "Bill Maher? Oh no, I know what he does. Interview denied!" But he does make a point that it's the belief that he's calling stupid, not the person. Another good example is this scene where he's in a trucker's chapel, and one guy gets pissed off and walks out, but the rest genuinely try to answer his questions, they part amicably, and he allows them to lay hands on him and pray. He says "Thank you for being Christ-like and not just Christians." Good point.
