bob_barron 0 Report post Posted February 21, 2009 Steve Martin makes me so fucking mad now. Every movie after 1991 pisses over the memory of all the work he did in the 70s and 80s. Fuck Pink Panther and this imposter Steve Martin. You completely ignore his writing, which is great. I loved Pure Drivel and Born Standing Up, and his pieces for the New Yorker are hilarious. His movies are hit and miss since then, but he does the movies to fund his art collection and to allow him to continue to write. I love Bowfinger though, that's a great movie. King Kamala 0 Report post Posted February 21, 2009 There was a really interesting documentary on Steve Martin from about ten years ago or so that I saw on Ovation or Trio. He basically admitted that writing was his number one passion and he only does a lot of his movies to allow him to live comfortably and fund his art collection. Unfortunately, his lackadaisical attitude towards being in movies really shows. But I'd venture to say that Born Standing Up is about as awesome as his films since 1991 have been crappy. Though like Bob, I kind of liked Bowfinger. I also enjoyed Leap of Faith.

luke-o 0 Report post Posted February 22, 2009 45 minutes is a bit long for a short film. I think that's the cut-off between a short and a feature. To be honest, the film wasn't inteded to be that long. The script was 32 pages long, it just got extended via action sequences.

But again, I love The Jerk, Pennies From Heaven, and Born Standing Up too much for me to allow that happen.

To be fair, I wasn't aware he had ever written anything so can't judge that either way. However, I love old Steve Martin movies, most of his stuff with Carl Reiner is pretty decent (The Jerk, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid). Besides, I was purely talking about the movies he has done since 91. I think Bowfinger might be the exception to the rule on the 'post 91 movies suck' assumption. Though that's only funny because it takes the piss out of Eddy Murphy and Steve Martin. As for Eddie Murphy - the less said the better. He's another victim of the 80s turning into the 90s. RIP Fred Savage and Judge Reinhold.
MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted February 22, 2009 So off the Steve Martin Train for a minute, I finally got a chance to see Smokey and the Bandit 3. Ive heard how terrible it was but I never really bothered to try and catch it, and then low and behold it was on HDNET Movies this morning. I think I just saw quite possibly the worst 85 minutes of cinema ever. I was trying to wrap my head around why it was so awful, from the disjointed cuts and continuity errors (B.T. Justice has not one but TWO tires blow and he's like, fuck tires I dont need tires and two seconds later he's driving on 4 perfectly inflated tires again) and horrible dubbing (I dont think Gleason or Reed actually had 50% of their original dialog left and the word subbing was rediculous considering the ammount of nudity..you can show pussy but you cant say it?) not to mention the fact that the lack of Burt Reynolds for all but 90 seconds of that 85 makes you realize that they just threw this together to cash in on the S&B craze even when Burt really wanted nothing to do with it after the questionable sequel (which I always thought was ok but nothing compared to the first). THEN...I find out that the original plan was for Gleason to play Justice and the Bandit in a dual role and that got shit on by test audiences and they went back and reshot everything with Gleason as the Bandit and replaced it with Cledus. I also was able to use the HD to freeze frame at the points where it was noticable that the stunt driver for the Bandit was an old fat guy which I didnt notice the first time through. This makes everything make sense other than why the hell the movie was actually released, since at some point someone had to go "You know, this is a pile of shit" (which would have been an understatement). Also, I now desperately want to see the original test version (Smokey is the Bandit!) just to see if could have actually been worse than what they ended up with (Me thinks that the test audience probably were dumbasses but it does sound really stupid) Im also quite thankful that Smokey and the Bandit 4 (thousand) (basically Smokey and the Bandit in space/future) never saw the light of day (yet) though now Im waiting for the remake which I would think is all but inevitable... DrVenkman PhD 0 Report post Posted February 22, 2009 I watched bits and pieces of a movie called "Monster Ark" this morning - I'm certain it was awful and ripped at least two scenes off from Raiders (I suppose it could have been 'paying tribute', but come on...) but it featured Tony Lister, Renee O'Conner (still hot), and Amanda Crew (hot since I first saw her on some Canadian show about tennis), so I kept going back to it. MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted February 23, 2009 Im not sure if this should go here or not but anyway: Best Buy cutting back sales of Anime Best Buy is about to dramatically change its anime strategy, eliminating most anime from nearly half its stores, according to an industry source. The change will focus Best Buy’s anime efforts on those stores that have historically done best with the category, and nearly eliminate anime in stores that have produced a disproportionate share of anime returns. The new strategy will kick off March 1st, when 50% off anime closeout sales will begin in over 460 stores nationwide. After the sales end on March 21st, those stores will offer only around 20 core anime SKUs.
