For fucking Jorge Julio. I'm glad, because Julio can blow some games for a division rival.

A poll of the biggest blunders, one for each team, you pick your top 10.

Yankees: Trading Fred McGriff and others for Dale Murray and Tom Dodd (1982)

McGriff would eventually hit 493 homers; Dodd wouldn't.

Don Mattingly ('82-'95) says hi. From Monument Park. Mr. Neyer, they played the same position.

This is the worst deal the Yankees ever made? I'll take that any day as the worst blunder my team ever made, especially if you look at some of the other scoffs on that list. I think I might be able to name at least 5 worse deals they have made in the last decade or so than that one.

I wouldn't mind the Red Sox giving up Lester, Delcarmen, and Pedroia for Dontrelle. Its a package that's been discussed amongst the Boston media and evidently one Florida is interested in if the media is correct.

Please no. I'm all for contending teams moving prospects for a proven player (especially someone young and proven like Dontrelle), but that's like the entire upper tier of the Boston farm system gone in one shot for a pitcher who has shown fits of being inconsistent. Pedroia is already pegged as the 2B (or SS) of the future in Boston and Lester is the most hyped SP since Roger came up. It's too much after they bled the system for Beckett.

Holy hell. D-Backs get fleeced. I'll take a questionable Hernandez over a healthy Julio. So the D-Backs have essentially traded Vazquez for Julio?

El Duque for Julio is something I would approve of even if El Duque could never pitch again.

In 20 years Zambrano for Kazmir will go down as the Mets biggest gaffe.

Agreed.

It's fun having a farm system. I like Delcarmen, but he's the only one of those three that I would be comfortable with letting go to get Dontrelle.

Rob names two contentions about that.

1. The Yankees should've gotten more in return (namely, anything) for a guy who would go on to hit 493 career home runs.

2. The American League has the Designated Hitter.

It's an excellent book and I give it a full recommendation. Rob discusses a couple of blunders where he gives the principles a fair shake.

Well...I can't say I'm delighted with the trade, since Julio has had some decent outings recently and Hernandez's health is in question, as has already been stated several times in this thread. I'm happy that Minaya has finally made a move in an effort to fix the rotation, but I'm definitely not convinced that it's the right one to make.

Not really. Center fielder Chris Young was the real prize of the trade.

I'd like them to keep Loretta for a couple more years and have Lowrie take over as the SS in a couple seasons. I can live with a middle infield of Loretta and A-Gon for a couple more years. I figure Papelbon will be starting eventually with Hansen becoming the closer. Becket, Willis, Papelbon would be unreal.

El Duque is a better bandaid than Lima or Gonzalez. Once Bannister and Maine are healthy we'll have a better clue of how the back end looks and El Duque is a more than adequate reliever in the mold of Heilman who could very easily slip back into the rotation down the road now that they have a comparable guy in his place. He gives the Mets more flexibility and we know the pressure won't get to him. I expect Pelfrey to be up after the AS break anyway, so as long as his back doesn't explode we should be fine just giving up Julio to get him.

But then what about second base? Loretta's a good player, but he's almost 35 and can't play forever. Why waste Pedroia to Florida, when there's probably a way to get Willis without giving up their two best prospects in the same trade?

I suppose. I just really fear that Hernandez will be battling nagging injuries for the rest of the year or miss significant time because of them. And call me an optimist, but I think Minaya should have waited to see how Soler pitches tonight before making the deal.

Also, I didn't realize until just now that John Maine came with Julio to the Mets when they dealt Benson. That makes me feel quite a bit better about the initial deal.

Hey Randy, try not to suck tonight, please? 7 strong innings, plus putting Manny on his ass after his showboating last night and I'll forgive you for your shitty start to the season.

That's too much to give up for Dontrelle Willis. He's not really an immediate need for the team, is he? You already have two aces on the staff as it is, and you have to get the feeling that Dontrelle isn't gonna last a terribly long time.

A couple more years for Loretta? This guy is nearing the end of his career. Dustin Pedroia is one of the best prospects in baseball. Why give up what could be your future rock of the infield on the hopes that Mark Loretta doesn't fall off a cliff in the next year. Plus any scenario that features A-Gon being the SS past the All-Star break this year is not one that I am in favor of. There comes a point when plus defense can no longer make up for being a black hole in the offese.

Papelbon hasn't developed a reliable third pitch that can get guys out. He's been lights-out in the bullpen, but that's not the only reason he is being kept at the back end instead of in the rotation at this point. There are serious concerns that this guy can develop the tools to be a 1 or 2 in this league. As for Hansen, this guy's development has been all over the map. He's probably going to end up being a starter or long man before he's called up for good.

If the Dodgers win in another blowout tonight, I'm gonna jump through the roof.

I wonder if Boston would make a hard run at him just to keep him from going to New York, where he could really be useful. The way he's going now, though, is he really going to help ANYONE? It's not like he's going along like Randy Johnson in '04, he's getting hammered most of the time.

The organization seems to be heavily leaning towards keeping Papelbon as their closer for the forseeable future and are now stretching Hansen out to be a starter. At least that's what they have told Hansen recently. Hansen has 3-4 PLUS pitches while right now Papelbon has at best 2 PLUS pitches and that's all you need in a 1-2 inning role especially with his arm strength.

I do not want Willis in Boston if it means moving Pedroia and/or Lester. I much rather look forward to seeing Lester, Hansen, and Beckett fronting this rotation coming 2007 and beyond. Pedroia, Lowrie, and Ellsbury(CF prospect compared to Damon) will be a fine young middle of the field as well. Afterall we dont't really want to become the Yankees.

Who knew Sidney had a stash of bitches. His girl talked about how he grabbed her ass before some of the pics were taken. I like the one of Jay Buhner, where the caption says Sorry Mrs. Buhner.

Al, please tell me why my beloved D-Backs gave up more than a bag of balls for Jorge Julio. Sigh.

The Duke's last start was good. He probably struggled this year because of his injuries. Even if he's only healthy once in a while, he's still worth far too much in this trade.

Josh Towers makes me want to hurt people. 2 runs on four hits in the first, and two of the outs were nearly extra base hits, but for some good defensive work by the outfielders.

Towers needs to be the one to go down to Syracuse when Chacin comes off the DL. He has lost all confidence in himself and his abilities.
