X-Men 3

Recommended Posts

Seeing it in a college town, it was evident that a large portion of people in the theater knew the famous internet video. As soon as Juggernaut dropped the "Do you know who I am?" line, assorted whoops of "ohhhhhh shit" and "yessssss" and "ahahahahahahahaha" resounded throughout the theater. I admit to contributing on the "ahahahaha" front. I'm absolutely certain this was a reference to the clip.

Fair enough. I'll still attest to a good chunk of the audience I saw it with not getting it, mostly because they thought the follow-up line was just as funny.

Edwin beat me to it...but I'll just say it was the same with the movie theater I was in. The reference was obvious to mostly everyone.

Juggs: "Don't you know who I am?"

Then, the buzz started..."Oh shit! Here it comes"..."Is he actually gonna say what I think he's gonna say?"

The line came, big pop. Sorta like Urkel's "Did I do that?" :P

While I was watching this (and in particular when Phoenix killed Xavier and at the end when she was basically disintegrating everything), I kept thinking that they might as well have cut out the subtlety and just had Jean wearing the Infinity Gauntlet. It felt that ridiculous at times.

Yeah, I'm glad 2Gold explained one thing. No one ever seems to die in X-Men. I swear when I read that possible scenario with Prof. X (

namely that he transferred his mind to someone else

) I couldn't help but think of Rai #0. I guess Xavier is now taking lessons from Toyo Harada.

Only a few died in this one and they were mostly worthless. Jean doesn't say she killed him, she imagines herself rising out of the lake and she begs Wolverine to kill her while Wolverine keeps saying, "what happened to Scott?"

Wolverine makes the assumation she killed him because Phoenix throws him against a wall hard enough to kill him.

Jean can come back since hell, Phoenix is incredibly strong. Cyclops can come back easily as well, you never saw his death and it is just assumed she vaporized him so that one can be wiped out as well. And Xavier is Xavier.

Xavier was doing this shit since before Harada was even a force in the Valiant Universe. I know for certain that Xavier has "died" twice. The first time, it turns out that he imparted some psychic abilities on a reformed villain named Changeling (the basis for cartoon Morph, btw) and it was actually Changeling that died.

The second time, he was infected or killed by the Brood and the Shi'ar transferred his mind into a cloned body.

The golden rule in comics used to be "only Bucky stays dead". Nowadays, that's probably amended to "only Uncle Ben and the Waynes stay dead", so you can pretty much take it to the bank that if they want Xavier back for X4, they'll make it so.

As for those "Acolytes" that died, Quill got a bigger part than just about anybody would've expected, I think. Arclight has been cloned so many times it's not funny, and Spike/Marrow was pretty much one of those one-off things.

And I know this is supposed to be the last one, the amount of deaths seemed unnecessary. I know I was supposed to care, but I just didn't. My main beef was the script, I guess. Visually, it was an exciting movie, but the script was just awful.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie. It wasn't the greatest movie ever, but Ratner did a good job with the script he was given, and tried to keep things as smooth as possible.

Things I liked:

- The Callisto/Storm fights were a nice nod to the comics.

- Rogue actually getting the cure was a nice twist

- The fact that Magneto may not have lost his powers gives them an out for the next movie

- Trying to tie Phoenix in with a "real world" explanation. Sure, the whole Phoenix Saga would've been cool, but could you do it in a two-hour movie? No.

- No Gambutt. Always a plus in my book.

- Fastball special.

- The Danger Room. About fricking time. Trek can have a holodeck on the TV show, but it takes three movies to do the Danger Room?

Things I didn't like:

- Bill Duke (Trask) needed more airtime.

- I was hoping for Sentinels with Trask around.

- Vinnie Jones could've been better as Juggernaut.

- Angel was almost an afterthought in the movie. There was no need for the scene with him at the mansion.

- Speaking of which, what was with the SuperFriends-like travel? Alberta by motorcycle? No prob. Angel flying from San Fran to New York? Easy.

Probably more that I didn't think of, but it's early.

Starvenger, dude I was only kidding about the Xavier/Harada comparison. Having not read the countless back issues of X-Men I'm hazy on how many times Xavier has died, but I did remember the bit in Rai #0 where Aric (an aging X-0 Manowar) slices Harada with his sword, but Harada throws his mind into Aric's wife as he's dying.

Dammit, this is now making me want an X-0 movie.

I think we need a "sarcasm" button in this forum. I totally missed that.

An X-O Manowar movie would be cool. Spider-aliens... not so much. Ugly things.

I saw it last night and liked it a lot. About damn time something happened to Mystique, she should have died in the first movie. My only real complaint is Patrick Stewart dies but Halle Berry lives? That's just wrong.

Oh and I marked out for Iceman turning into full body Iceman.

I'm going to see it in less than an hour, so I'll be back with thoughts later. Having read all this stuff though I feel as if I'd already seen it.

(As far as the sarcasm of Harada and Prof. X, obviously I knew Xavier had been doing the mind tricks and telepathy for decades before Harbinger #1 was even published)

Oh, I guess I don't get this "cult" reference, either. Please elaborate.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4qdX6_9XgI

More than 2 million views...one of the most popular videos "You Tube" has made famous. I assure you most of the people laughing in the theater were familiar with this.

I'm new to Youtube. Let me get this straight: that viral is so popular (and hella funny) that Ratner and company used "Do you know who I am" and "I'm the juggernaut bitch" in the movie? Seriously, that's hilarious.

- Bill Duke (Trask) needed more airtime.

This is my biggest complaint character-wise as well. After a great villain with Stryker in the last film, the humans were terribly underdeveloped here.

Throw in Worthington II here too. His character was actually pretty good and realistic, but he didn't get nearly enough screentime for his importance to the plot.

I thought for sure the conversation between the Pres and Trask, after Magneto arrived in San Francisco, was going to end with the initiation of Project Wideawake. It should've. That it didn't made Trask altogether meaningless and nothing more than a nod to comic fans.

Yeah Bill Duke is in this movie. When he first showed up on screen I was like "Whoa, Bill Duke is in this?" I too thought he could have been in a bit more of the movie, but I also recall when the 2nd film came out some people were whining about "Oh, they had a human villain in this one." I think X-Men fans are some of the hardest to satisfy since there are so many insane, detailed storylines and about 10,000 characters.

Anyway I thought it was pretty good, though I find it hard to really weep when someone "dies" because we all know damn well that they will just be back at some point. I didn't stay till after the credits so I can't really vouch for the Prof. X thing (incidentally I hate that kind of crap, major developments after the credits).

Will they just do a Wolvie prequel at this point, or actually go with Storm now leading the X-Men? I think a movie like this one shows why Wolvie is such a popular character. He gets his ass kicked from pillar to post for 104m here but keeps coming back for more. None of the whiny shit that Cyclops is prone to.

If they decide to go with a X4, which I know Fox isn't against, then it'll be a villian who hates mutants and humans which causes a divide. Which would lead to Trask going ahead with the Operation.

It's only really over because of the cost to bring them all back.

"I'm the Jugganaut, bitch!" OMG THAT'S SOOOO FUNNY! The crowd ate it up like it was the wittiest thing ever blurted on the silver screen, but I just sat there wondering if that's all it takes to amuse some people.

Same here. And Kitty calling him 'dickhead'. Wow, that's funny! Now, I know people curse in real life but, to me, the more vulguar terms just seemed... out-of-place in the film.

For those interested, I've posted my full review of the film here. Overall, I was disappointed, and I'm not a comic book reader (save for Ultimate).

Recast then. Most actors aren't going to devote ten years to a series anyways. It works for Bond.

With Jean out of the way, it is the perfect time to introduce Emma Frost.

With Ratner directing and *three* screenwriters, I pretty much expected it to be a brainless actionfest. The most entertaining segment (intentional or unintentional), was the danger room scene where Wolvie was looking all "X-Team", chomping on a cigar, watching a plan come together. *Fastball special* Hey, look, a sentinel head!

Although I'm pretty much agreeing 100% with the review. Pyro/Iceman being teased all this time, and that's what it leads to? Pathetic.

Also about Mystique/Magneto...not only does he suddenly not care in the least about her, but she also has apparently become a "traitor" to beliefs she's held nearly all her life?

The fact that they used all that beginning screentime for exposition about Jean...what the hell? It seemed set up just to reuse the Grey home for the scene "20 years later." Although Rick Baker's makeup effects on the younger X and Magneto were excellent (that guy's been around *forever*, I swear.)

Jean mostly stands around for the entire film. Then looks *super-intense* for her "action" scenes.

What the hell was the tossing around of "class 3!", "class 5, OMG!"? It was like Pokemutes. Yet while bringing it up it seemed like Magneto took along a bunch of useless mutants for the hell of it, too. "Porcupine boy, I choose you! We'll use for a shocking scene later where you skewer a human."

I did enjoy Pyro being Magneto's right-hand man, especially their team-up at the end (Magneto levitates the cars, Pyro sets them on fire) and they are officially my OTP.

I probably shouldn't ask, but what's that acronym mean?

Anyway, it was worth the money I paid for it....that is, I used a free movie pass. I hereby rate it "entertaining crap."

Oh, thoughts on the trailers:

Where the ****ing hell were my mother****ing snakes on a plane?!??!

My Super Ex-Girlfriend--looks terrible. I think Lobo would be even a bit offended at how sexist it appears.

PotC2 : looks okay, never saw the original film. Where's the value in seeing a guy who looks like Cthutlu (lovecraft--feel free to correct my spelling there) for an entire damn film? Anyway, probably big, loud, and stupid movie.

Ghost Rider : Interesting...but it's a long way from release.

Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift : ....

X-Men 3 gets even more stars from me for having Bill Duke and the voice of R. Lee Ermey.

If only he had been given an on-screen role, it would have been better.

I liked Magneto leaving Mystique like that. It makes sense that he'd have such an irrational hate of humans that he'd be so cold. I also liked how he yelled at Jean to stop and told Pyro to shut up about the Professor and yet tried to use Jean anyway. Even after what happened to his old friend he was still more concerned about his agenda.

I've always had the impression that underneath the rhetoric Magneto is as bad as the humans that hate mutants. He isn't a rightous man.

Although Rick Baker's makeup effects on the younger X and Magneto were excellent (that guy's been around *forever*, I swear.)

It wasn't makeup, though. It was some computer de-ageing thingy. Like, they used photographs of both Stewart and McKellen from 20 years ago and did that...somehow. I read an interview w/McKellen about it.

Completely irrelevant, but... I'd hate to think how he would be during sex, should he ever lose control. Quill, I mean.

I probably shouldn't ask, but what's that acronym mean?

Yes, you probably shouldn't, but since you did, I'll answer. It means... One True Pairing.

It seemed set up just to reuse the Grey home for the scene "20 years later."

I'm guessing it was there mostly to show off pretty CG effects and how powerful she was. Yet I thought the x-gene, y'know, came to be only during puberty? And the whole idea of either group being able to so easily destroy the home without anyone else in the neighborhood calling the cops or something is just stupid.

Magneto was just showing his true colors- Mystique's one big contribution to the cause was her ability to infiltrate. With that ability gone, she was no longer any use to him.

As for Raven becoming a traitor- the President said it best. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Everything she's done for Magneto, and he turns his back on her like that? Of course she's gonna do whatever she can to fuck up his plans, the cause be damned.

Darn...that's rather disappointing, but ah well--Beast still turned out great.

Showed a friend your review...

him: she wants to make a shounen ai thing with Jonny Storm and Pyro doesn't she?

me: *whistles innocently*

him: ok, I'm not taking anything she says seriously anymore

I think that means he liked it, but didn't want to admit it.

That is actually one of the most accurate scenes in the movie, continuity wise. In the comics (and the novelization) Jean as playing outside with her best friend Annie when Annie is struck by a car. As the driver flees, Jean instinctivley uses her power to go into Annies mind to try and save her. In the comics, Jean barely makes it out of Annies mind before she dies, and is rendered comatose for a short time before Xavier pulls her around.

I saw this today and I loved it. The action scenes were fast and well-filmed. I can forgive some of the dialogue because the rest of the movie was so enjoyable.

Dark Phoenix having that "Village of the Damned-remake" look to her when she cranked up her powers was just creepy.

Xavier's SLOW death was kind of hard to watch. Especially seeing his skin start to peel off from Phoenix's power.

By far my favorite scene was Wolverine confronting Phoenix at the end. She tried that disentigration trick on him, but his healing power worked too fast for it to have much effect even though she managed to almost fully-expose his ribcage at one point. That was such a great scene.

I'm looking forward to getting the DVD of this in a few months.
