Transformers The Movie

Recommended Posts

Good flick, very enjoyable. My only real gripes are that...SPOILERS AHEAD...

-There wasn't enough development of the Decepticons (or even any Autobot outside of Prime and Bumblebee), so outside of "they're fucking evil," I didn't really hate on them.

-Michael Bay's directing during action sequences. Yeah, you like fast cuts and shaking the camera so that it feels like something you'd actually be watching. I dig it occasionally. But there's a reason why the last half hour, or so, of Hot Fuzz was utterly fucking hilarious (outside of the whole "common village folk owning automatic weapons" and the Point Break reference): they spoofed your directing style dead-on. It works in small doses, but I'm sick of every film you do having that style of directing during the action. I want to SEE what's happening, not feel like I'm watching Blair Witch with robots that turn into trucks.

-For half of the movie, I thought I was watching Independence Day. I'm glad to see that millenia-old Cybertron inhabitants are Mac compatible...just like the alien locusts with superior technology...though the whole "every technological achievement since Megatron's discovery has been us working backwards from him" sorta makes that sensical.

END SPOILERS

But despite those, it's still a very, very good movie. Perfect summer flick, great action film, and John Turtorro needs to team up with Shia more often. I could actually see the two of 'em producing some funny shit.

Lots of really stupid plot points--the biggest part being

the military taking the cube into a damn populated city to protect it, insuring much destruction and possibly many fatalities (although they don't actually show that for sure...but come on).

OP being knocked around and surprisingly not squashing anybody when he landed was funny.

And the action scenes almost without exception made me nauseous and want to vomit. Michael Bay full-on frame-fucking made it in!

Well, honestly, what's the difference between a typical Emmerich film and a typical Bay film..........?

.......?

Oh yeah. Bay films curiously almost never bomb.

Hell, my brother thought Independence Day WAS a Bruckheimer/Bay production. It seems exactly like something they would do. And yes, Transformers did remind me quite a bit of ID. That had a better cast than Transformers though, but it stands to reason since we're supposed to be seeing this for the robots and not the people anyway.

I thought Transformers was fun enough, but I do echo the notion that the Decepticons were underused in the film. Aside from Megatron nobody really was developed, and even he wasn't in that much of the movie.

My theater was packed and a bunch of people cheered at the end. I wasn't quite that enthused, but that's mainly because Transformers for me personally was a distant 3rd in the 80s Holy Trinity behind Masters of the Universe and GI Joe. Give me a real He-Man movie with "BY THE POWER OF GRAYSKULL....I HAVE THE POWER!" and I'll be there marking out like a little bitch.

I thought it was alright. I really enjoyed Shia's performance. I thought the big battle at the end was pretty lame. as it was hard to follow.

Also, a lot of great Michael Bay lines.

Great movie!

What I liked:

- The amazing CGI obviously

- Ironhide

- Scorponok (even though he could have a little bigger)

- Frenzy (cool character, I'm glad that wasn't Soundwave though)

- Jon Voight

- Lots of humor especially with Mrs. Witwicky, who I could have sworn was the film version of Bam's mother from Jackass

- References as a nod to original fans (The Volkswagon Beetle, Porsche, Prime having an energy weapon for example)

-

Optimus Prime Vs. Megatron and no fucking Hot Rod to interfere!

What I didn't like:

- Not enough Starscream

- Hugo Weaving being used only for his voice to be altered and sound totally unrecognizable. David Kaye was the best Megatron voice actor IMO, should have used him instead.

- Prime's mouth. I was hoping it would be just like how it was in Beast Wars, that was better.

- The movie was 30 minutes longer than it should have been. It dragged with dumb plot points that turned out to be a waste. The glasses subplot mainly.

- Tyrese

- John Turturro

- Scorponok and Barricade just disappearing

-

Jazz

dying.

I went into this movie looking for a time killing popcorn action flick since I never cared about this prior to the movie.

I got what I expected. Numerous gaping plot holes but that's expected with a Bay movie. Shia was great. I found the blatant product placement comical.

Saw this last Monday night. Overall, there was waaaaayyy too much comedy (no more than 3 funny character, this had like 8!!!) but the action made it awesome. The DVD will be bought for the action alone.

Will this get a "regular" DVD release, not just Blu-Ray or whatever?

This hasn't been touched upon all that much, but did anyone else wonder why the hell Anthony Anderson was in this movie? He wasn't exactly a believable computer hacker (maybe that was the point I guess, to show a different sort of hacker than the usual geeky white dude). And the Australian chick....how the hell did she even know him and what was the nature of their relationship in the film? Was he a long time friend? Just a guy she knew that was a hacker? Ex boyfriend (which I don't really buy)?

They could have cut all that stuff out of the movie.

For the record...here is what Movie Arcee would have looked like had she not been replaced by Ironhide:

It's been suggested that in the next movie, if she makes it, she play Mikaela's guardian, like Bumblebee is Sam's

some of you guys are putting way too much thought in to dissecting a MICHAEL BAY movie...it was dumb, it was loud, it was fun...par for the course with the guy.

Those don't look to bad, actually.

Yes, they could. There was a lot of things they could have cut from the movie, honestly.

My first choice would be Michael Bay.

I doubt we'll ever see Arcee. I read that the reason she wasn't used is because they didn't want to/know how to explain robot gender, which makes sense to me.

Lushus, are you ready for Michael Bay to do a GI Joe movie, or maybe a He-Man movie? I can see Bay doing GI Joe more than Masters of the Universe...he's more adept at crazy shoot em up affairs, and that's what GI Joe would be.

How about Peter Jackson for MOTU? Or maybe Zach Snyder, who just did 300?

I think Bay would be about as good as any one else to do a Joe movie...I mean, i'm not expecting Apacolypse Now or anything if a Joe movie was made. If you need explosions and over-the-top cliched heroism, the cornerstones of GI Joe stories, Bay is your man!

The Australian/Anthony Anderson subplot was such a waste. It added nothing to the story, was never resolved and really not that funny. Apparently, Michael Bay thinks loud black people are funny/entertaining, since he had three of them

This is what I'm saying...

Here's what I've said elsewhere: **SPOILERS**

Whoever wrote the movie almost HAS to be racist. All the black male characters we see are near their grandmothers, and yell incessantly at them. It wouldn't have been bad with one, but BOTH black men do that? Then the "black" Transformer, Jazz, BREAKDANCES and is the first to die. I mean, it's all probably coincidence, but it seems a bit much for that.

Why is it that all the things the Allspark cube brought to life were evil? Not one thing brought to life by the cube was nice. And why we're on the cube, if it regenerated Frenzy (the chirpy EWOK decepticon), then why not Bumblebee towards the end? Was the chick's heroic moment that necessary?

Why is it that all the Autobots, other than Jazz and Optimus Prime, sounded British? Why does Ironhide, the "Weapons Specialist," sound like he's ready for a spot of tea?

The Autobots seemed a bit air-headed. In one scene, the Autobots are basically careless about whether or not they've been spotted. In another, they're surprised that humans aren't scared of them. I know in the first scene they were "rushed," but you'd think they'd at least TRY not to out themselves. They acted more like the Ninja Turtles than the Transformers

Also, they were really concerned about the loss of human life, but when they start fighting the decepticons, they stop caring and start flinging cars and crashing buildings? I understand collateral damage, but you could at least put some effort into protecting people.

It was really just bad character development. Instead of the autobots being what they've always been in the cartoons, which is peace loving guys who only fight because they have too and are willing to sacrifice victory to protect innocent life, they're just as willing to fight as the decepticons. I'd take that part personally and be truly pissed about it, but I've noticed that all of Hollywood seems to miss the point that there need to be some good guys who are purely good. This isn't the first movie I've watched in the past few years that would've benefited from the protagonist being of pure heart. It seems like Hollywood is full of Vince Russo types who think everything HAS to be shades of grey.

Obviously, I didn't like it. And I know it's just a "popcorn flick," but even popcorn flicks should make more sense than this

Loud black people are funny.

People with accents are smart.

Michael Bay's an idiot.

You should have known by the large human cast that there would be very little Transformer character development...in the whole of the 3 G1 seasons and the movie there were 7 humans, we're talking 80+ episodes here, just 5 FEATURED humans: Spike, Sparkplug, Carly, Chip, Daniel. There were others that made a few appearances, but those were the main featured humans...so of course there's going to be more TF development in the cartoons. When you see Shia LeBouf, John Turturro, Jon Voight as well as other recognizable names, you have to know you're not getting TF development. Again, I don't really know whwy you guys went into this movie thinking you were going to get something more than what you got.

The only real disappoint I had with the TF development was the fact that only one line alluded to any animosity between Megatron and Starscream...that was a major sub-plot they could have exploited. I understand there are these rumors that Starscream was amongst the group of F-22s that fired at Megatron, but I really don't believe that.

Brett Ratner must think so as well - why else is he the only guy that's given Chris Tucker a job in the last 5 years?

Hey, did Sucre buy it at some point? He kinda disappeared after Qatar.

Megatron... I understand that they didn't want to use Frank Welker b/c his voice didn't reflect the more monstrous-looking Megatron, but why not use David Kaye instead of Hugo Weaving?

All in all, not a bad movie, but if you think it's gonna stay #1 after this weekend... you're crazy.

No... he was in the second run and took out some of the planes that where going to attack Megatron.

Who thinks this? Excluding deluded TF fanboys, everyone's under the assumption that Harry Potter's taking the top spot this week. And they're right.

There's a rumor on some boards that Starscream, after taking out some of the jets, blended in with them and shot at Megatron at the end. It would be cool, but you figure they make it more obvious unless they're going to expose it in the sequel.

To be honest, I don't think anyone on this board does, but it's just a cryptic comment on how stacked the summer movie season is this year. Although yes, if you're deluded, you probably would think that TFs will rule the roost.

- Scorponok dissappearing

Unless you're retarded, or blind, then you must not have seen Scorponok dig himself into the fucking sand after being blasted by a Spectre Gunship.

Edit: Some of your complaints are a riot, no seriously, if you thought this was going to be a great, fanastic movie of solid character build and etc, then you're fucking stupid. It's based off a damn toyline that ran for multiple seasons with bad episodes(besides a handful.)
