DALLAS (AP) -- Flamboyant Dallas Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens attempted suicide by overdosing on pain medication, even putting two more pills into his mouth after fire rescue personnel arrived.

A Dallas police report released Wednesday morning said Owens told rescue workers "that he was depressed." The report was first released by WFAA-TV.

The rescue worker "noticed that (his) prescription pain medication was empty and observed (Owens) putting two pills in his mouth," the police report said.

The worker attempted to pry them out with her fingers, then was told by Owens that before this incident he'd taken only five of the 40 pain pills in the bottle he'd emptied. The worker then asked Owens "if he was attempting to harm himself, at which time (he) stated, `Yes."'

If it was anyone else in the world, I wouldn't say they did this for attention.

I said it jokingly in Week 4 NFL thread, but now I mean it. Publicity stunt.

We'll get this whole saga about him overcoming his depression and everyone will learn to love him for some reason. He'll come back better than ever and people will eat it up like crazy.

I'm sorry, but as Leena said, if it was anyone else, I wouldn't be saying this. I mean yes, this isn't a laughing matter, but geezus, the timing just reeks of being "too good".

I am not a T.O. fan. In fact, he may be my most hated player. That being said, I can't possibly fix myself to believe that this was a publicity stunt. I think I remeber learning that most people who talk about committing suicide don't actually go through with it. This is a serious matter. My best guess is that with all the negative talk he's heard through the years, it's worn on him and gotten him to this point. Based on interviews and documentaries, T.O. seems to be a guy who takes everything personal. Besides that, he's had his fair share of personal problems off the field throughout his life. A combination of those factors probably led to these events. I wouldn't be surprised if T.O. has problems with depression or something similar.

Ed Werder reported that the 49ers and Eagles both requested mental tests/evaluations but that TO was offended and refused to do them so there is some history here.

The mood swings I remember hearing about years ago.

Poor guy. Being vilified on a national stage can't be good for your self-worth, no matter how much money you make, or how much you can bench. Of course, he probably is an ostentatious jackass and lousy teammate, but it's scary that it came to this.

Ugh yes, he'll be loving Jesus or Allah in a couple years. That will be even worse.

I don't think this is a publicity stunt...it doesn't really fit T.O. Making fun of Jeff Garcia or calling out McNabb, or his various silly antics...those are publicity stunts. Taking a bunch of pills and possibly trying to commit suicide? Yes, it's a call for attention but it's not a publicity stunt.

His publicist made the 911 call, and is now denying that he tried to kill himself despite the police report which says he did. He could return to practice as early as tomorrow. This is just ridiculous.

It's not as if there would be repercussions to my actions here, but I don't want to take a suicide attempt lightly, just on general principle, I guess.

I concur. The player obviously needs some mental help, which was apparent long before this incident, and it should be given.

Reports are that he's now been released from the hospital. So, if he really did try to kill himself, would this be standard operating procedure? Wouldn't he be held at the hospital and referred for a psychiatric evaluation, including a release from a psychiatrist that he's fit to play football? They'd really just let him go home like that?

Something doesn't add up.

So he's the EHME of the football world.

Unless Texas hospitals have different laws, standard operating procedure is for a psy evalution and if it is determined he is a danger to himself then he is held since attempted suicide is against the law.

So yeah, something doesn't stir the kool aid about this story.

That cop said that attempted suicide is not a criminal offense in his press conference. I say he tried to do it, and since it didn't "take" so to speak now they're in damage control and trying to bring up an allergic reaction.

Then Texas laws are different. I'd be surprised by that, but I'm really really not.

It's possible he said that this case wasn't being looked at as a criminal offense, but at the same time it doesn't make sense that the paramedics would call the cops if they didn't think it was an attempted suicide. This whole thing just strikes me as odd, but nevertheless TO's getting another week of free pub out of this and his very own special SportsCenter.

Plus, wouldn't the painkillers have messed up his liver and such. This does seem like bullshit. Remember that The Player is the only one who said he took all the pills. And besides, with the way pills are today, it's nearly impossible to kill yourself anyway.
