I guess I'm a dumbass for not being excited over a champion with A) an embarrassing rush defense, or B) a team starting Rex Grossman that's looked mediocre since they virtually clinched NFC home field in October. Could be a fantastic game, there will be plenty to hype even without NOLA stuff, you got a huge market with Chicago and a superstar in Manning, and a great D vs an explosive O with both teams looking really good in the Championship games. The actual game didn't really deliver (except for me because I'm a Steelers fan), but there's a wide quality gap in the teams. cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted January 22, 2007 Yes, this game tonight is one of the best games of all time, or at least it could be if the Colts go on and finish it in Miami. Sure, the Bears kicked the crap out of the Saints today but let's face it: The Saints were a 10-6 overachieving team. Hell, even Kerry Collins had his great day with the Giants against the Vikings to get to the Super Bowl in a rout that one time. Honestly, I see this Super Bowl ending up as a major anticlimax. One of two things will happen: 1) The Colts are severely hung over after this one and have nothing left, thus the Bears run it down their throats and cruise to a 31-14 type win. 2) Grossman goes against the league's #2 rated pass defense (yes, the Colts rushing D sucks but the pass D is actually solid) and tosses about 4 INTs. naiwf 0 Report post Posted January 22, 2007 Endy Chavez made one of the best catches in postseason history against the Cards in Game 7 of the NLCS. . . and it didn't matter because his team still lost. If the Colts get blown out by Chicago it makes today a nice little game that ultimately meant nothing. However, if it leads to Peyton finally getting his ring it takes on an even greater historical significance given that he overcame all of the odds, got the monkey off of his back and a dozen other sports cliches. The Bears have a very good defense, but I can't help believe that their medicore offense is going to need a ton of breaks in order to score enough to beat the Colts. I'd say the 1982 Niners/Cowboys game is legendary because the Niners won it and then also beat the Bengals to win the Super Bowl. If the Bengals win that game 26-21 though? It'd still be a great game, but not quite as great. Sure, Denver/Cleveland was also a major game for Elway, but since the Broncos just got squashed anyway in the Super Bowl it takes a bit off of it. I'm amazed that anyone thinks the Super Bowl won't draw massive, insane ratings. That aforementioned Niners/Bengals game is the highest rated SB of all time, mainly due to the amazing playoffs leading up to it (Dallas/SF in the NFC, and the crazy Miami/SD game in the AFC before SD lost to Cincy). Funny that the Colts are being compared to the Cardinals now, since St. Louis was a team reeling into the playoffs but somehow put it together. Both teams played astounding league title series (Cardinals vs. Mets, Colts vs. Pats) and ended up facing a team that had just steamrolled someone en route to the big game (Tigers smashed the Yankees and Oakland, Bears just mauled the Saints). Famous last words because New England essentially pulled off the football version of the 2004 ALCS. What an embarassment by that defense. Using the "San Diego beat us up" excuse doesn't fly because the Colts played the friggin' RAVENS last week and it didn't seem to effect them too much tonight. This exposes the linebacking corps as having lost a step and are getting too old to be effective. Still, you're telling me that Dillon or Maroney couldn't have converted a 3rd and 4 against a rush D that they had some success on instead of McDaniels pulling a Billick and calling this: 3-4-NE 46 (2:30) (Shotgun) 12-T.Brady pass incomplete short right to 80-T.Brown (21-B.Sanders). If McDaniels accepts the Raiders job, I'll drive him to the airport myself because he did the SAME EXACT thing in the first game in basically abandoning the running game and trying to make it a shootout (Belichick deserves some of the blame as well, but Josh is the O-Coordinator). This is WITH A FIFTEEN FUCKING POINT LEAD, too!! Perhaps the Colts would have stiffened up, but that kills the clock and lets the defense get a bit of a damn breather. Peyton played his ass off and deserved it, but at the same time, geez, what a fucking chokejob. EDIT: I gotta say, the Bears D may have found it's fastball again, so this SuperBowl matchup has me intrigued. The Saints were a dome team playing in shitty weather (sound familiar?) and good grief they put the ball on the ground so many times it wasn't funny. Just stupid shit like fumbling the kickoff, or Brees having it taken away for no real reason other than they were sucking today. Let's not kid ourselves...the Saints weren't too amazing. The Ravens, Bengals, and Steelers all whipped the Saints this year and 2 of those weren't even playoff teams. Even so, they were moving the ball today against the Bears but every time they did they would blow it by fumbling or something equally foolish. That said, I'd advise the Colts to jump out on the Bears in this game. If the Bears get any sort of lead they will no doubt pack it in and run the clock, no way in hell would they dare throw it with Grossman at that point.
