Even if the Sox don't sign Schilling [which they might] Gabbard is still behind Beckett, Matsuzaka, Wakefield, Lester and Buchholz, and that's assuming Masterson and Bowden don't develop further. They've already got spot-starters in Hansack and Pauley- Gabbard had NO spot on this team.

I missed it- did Salty and Dotel to the Braves get finalized?

I don't like getting rid of Gabbard, at all.

Are you serious? Gabbard is nothing more than filler. He has no future in the Red Sox rotation at all. They just sold high on a guy with a couple of fluke outings.

It appears now that Engel Beltre, a 17-year-old phenom in the Sox organization is included in the deal as well. He has as much upside as anyone but he's probably five years away. There's no way to know what the chances are that he'll develop into a star major leaguer.

The Yankees have no one to blame but themselves for not getting Gagne. Olney says this could have had him for Melky Cabrera.

We would have to give up Cabrera, Marquez, Horne, or Kennedy and all the Red Sox gave up was Gabbard, Murphy and a teenager, and you're saying that the Yankees have no one to blame but themselves? Get the hell outta here.

Same shit happened with Arizona. They wanted Soriano AND Nick Johnson for Schilling, and I forget what Boston gave up but it wasn't close to that.

Cabrera has been hitting a .320/.400 line since May, and has 11 outfield assists. No way we're giving that up for a 2 month rental, especially when we have an aging outfield.

Astros have apparently gotten something from the Padres for Morgan Ensberg.

Yeah!!!! I don't imagine that it's anybody good, but still, it's a good trade, considering the Padres could've gotten Ensberg for the league minimum in about a week.

People need to stop talking about Buchholz like he's already in the rotation. He's not due to come up until next season - maybe some bullpen time this year, but that's it.

He won't be in the starting rotation on opening day 2008?

That was my point, too. Schilling comes back this weekend- anyone who thought Gabbard was going to stick in that rotation was nuts. He was a spot-starter that turned into trade fodder. Simple as that.

So pending something big in the next ten minutes, our big move was recalling Matt Murton from Iowa. yawn.

Sounds like the White Sox want to give an extension to Jermaine Dye as well. They're really committed to keeping this bunch together, I guess. JD's not getting any younger, Kenny.

It's ok that the Dodgers didn't make more than one move. Keep the pieces intact for the future and let the present play out as it will.

Piniero seems like one of those guys that will be much better in the National League. Good trade for the Cardinals. They're going to make a considerable run down the stretch. It won't be enough to pass Milwaukee and Chicago, maybe one of the two, but not both.

Disappointed the Cubs didn't make a move. Given the Brewers not making any real impact moves, I'm not sure if it hurts their chances for the pennant, but teams like the Red Sox and Braves got considerably better in the last 24 hours.

I can't believe it only took Kyle Davies to get Dotel.

I like him.

Well with that argument, I'm convinced!

The Braves probably gave up a bit too much for Texiera, but Scheurholz has an excellent track record of making trades and dealing prospects. He basically got Renteria for nothing, seeing how Marte never did much in the bigs.

I'm thrilled about Dotel and getting rid of Davies.

The only move the Astros made at the deadline is trading Ensberg and cash to the Padres for a PTBNL and cash (or just cash). There was speculation up till about five minutes ago that Loretta was headed to Seattle or that Loretta and Lamb were headed to Seattle or San Diego, but Tim Purpura just gave a statement saying that although there was a lot of interest in Loretta, Lamb, Qualls, and Lidge, none of the returns would've been enough to warrant trading any of them. So, the last two seasons, the Astros' big trade deadline move was trading for a Devil Rays' third baseman.

I like Kenny Williams' thought process-

My team sucks and I have the worst farm system in the major leagues. I could sell off a bunch of these vets and rebuild this squad for a future run in an increasingly tough division.

Oh, what the hell. Let's re-sign everybody and go for it one more time. Don't stop believin'!!
