Matches You Wish You Still Had On Tape

Recommended Posts

OK, don't know why this topic came to me, but I figured I may as well put it up:

What are some matches from the past in WWF/E, WCW, ECW or any other company that you wish you still had recorded due to the fact that, for some reason or another, they will likely never go up on DVD?

Three off the top of my head are:

WWF Superstars: WWF Champion Bret "Hit Man" Hart vs. Bob Backlund (Backlund snaps for the first time post match)

WWF Action Zone: Skip (w/Sunny) vs. Barry Horowitz (HOROWITZ WINS! HOROWITZ WINS! HOROWITZ WINS!)

ECW TV: Well, not really a match...but the farewell of The Dupps from ECW. Where one of the Dupps is saying they'd be remembered like famous families in wrestling, runs down a few names, and the other one says "THE MULKEYS!"

In retrospect, recording the 3rd Rock From the Sun and Frasier series finales overtop of the Raw where Jericho and Benoit win the tag titles was a fairly stupid thing to do. In fairness, we had really bad cable (we stopped paying for it, the company cut it off, but did a bad job leaving us with a slightly snowy but very watchable signal that we never justified paying to replace until I entered the digital age) at the house from 1997 - 2006 so most of my off TV tapes looked bad.

Well, you have a reason.

And yeah, that tag title win is gonna be a VERY forgotten treasure now...

I had the last SNME with Bret-Shango, HBK-Bulldog, & Money Inc-Warrior/Savage on tape, but I have no idea what happened to it. I probably taped over it for something really stupid.

YouTube solved part of the problem with Bret Hart's bitching out Vince, and Kane and Mankind fighting Taker and Austin in HITC, but I miss very much the matches that led up to them: The Bret-Sid cage match on Raw from March 97, and Raw's Tag Team Royal Rumble from June 98.

Justin Credible and Tajiri had a really good match on TNN the show after Heatwave 00.

When Mike Awesome was ECW champ, I used to watch the shows with a tape in the VCR, and record any upcoming match that looked good. I had a bunch of Awesome/Spike Dudley and Awesome/Tanaka matches, a wicked Tajiri/Super Crazy match, and some other stuff.

My dad taped over it a few years back.

I had a Art barr comp that had his mask match vs Blue Panther from EMLL, his Mask vs Hair match vs Panther in AAA, The formation of Los Gringos Locos with Eddie and the match with Roddy Piper in the crowd from AAA. Plus it had the rare match from Portland where he broke John Rambo's nose on purpose. Such a great tape and I sent it to someone in a trade and got burned.

I'd like to have that miracle that Chris Jericho pulled out of Jeff Hardy on RAW back in February 2003 on tape. GREAT 15+ minute match! I didn't even consider recording it at the time, but wish that I had.

Big Show's world title match against Viscera from late 1999 would be a good one to still have. I know it's really only so fondly remembered due to Big Show's "missle dropkick", but it was still fun as all Hell to watch.

I actually had a habit of taping just about everything, so I have a lot of stuff on tape that might be considered hard to find these days. Triple H vs TAKA, Triple H vs Jericho with the fake belt change, Triple H and AUstin vs Benoit and Jericho with the tag title change, Kurt Angle vs Brock Lesnar Iron Man Match on Smackdown, The Smackdown Royal Rumble amongst other things. I also have both WCW All Nighters on tape as well that I picked up from a dealer at an indy show last year.

What I would love to have on tape is some old WWF Superstars / Prime Time / Wrestling Challange / RAW from 1992-1994ish when I first started watching wrestling as a kid.

It's not a match, but I wish I had the intro to WrestleMania V. I loved that "The MegaPowers - EXPLODE!" thing. I always enjoy the Survivor Series intros, especially the 1989 ones when they originally had guys like Barry Windham and Akeem on there (which you can find from the SS reports, they're on YouTube - Windham at least was even there for some of the promos, I think Akeem too but I don't recall).

Then for the actual PPV they ended up having Vince do shoddy dubs, like they replace Windham's Widowmaker with a junk picture of Earthquake (who was going by the Canadian Earthquake at the time but they didn't have the time to say all that within the dub, so Vince goes "AND THE EARTHQUAKE!" - might have been why they ended up changing his name and taking the Canadian flag off his chest).

I did kind of wonder why they kept Tully Blanchard on there though even though he'd been let go. Probably because it was "The Rockers - and the Brainbusters" and there wasn't time to say "The Rockers - and Arn Anderson and Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan" instead. Also, they made it kind of suspenseful by putting the Heenan Family vs. Ultimate Warriors match on last and Ventura teasing that "There's dissension in the Heenan Family, shoving in the locker room" etc.

Good times.

As far as actual matches go, I wish I had Slaughter vs. Warrior from RR91.

I also, like spman, had a habit and still have a habit to tape just about everything that comes on free TV. However, the lost gems I cannot find myself are the phantom Y2J/HHH title change, Triple H vs. TAKA, and RVD vs. HBK for the World Title on RAW in late 2002. Also, there is that Triple H/HBK World Title match from the end of 2003 that I cannot find, and I love that match. That's why I kept voting for that RAW to be the PYBO for next month on WWE 24/7. Please vote for me?

But other than that, I have basically mid 1998-on from WWE, WCW, and ECW.

EDIT: I need to see Ludvig Borga defeat Tatanka for the first time with a finger. That was awesome. I also want to see Bam Bam Bigelow attack Tatanka backstage before a match and cut his red hair.

Jericho/HHH fake title change is on the upcoming Raw DVD, is it not? HHH/Shawn from 2003 is on HBK's DVD too which, if you just won't go buy the thing, should at least make it available illegally somewhere.

Ryechnaia: Re-read the sub-title. Matches not likely to end up on DVD.

The RR91 match is on DVD, so that wouldn't qualify.

Yeah, I read it, but I guess I didn't feel like following directions. Sorry for derailing your thread.

That corey tapes site has most of that stuff I believe on his site with all the compilations and events. Plus his prices are pretty decent even for burnt bootlegs. I'm picking up a 61 disc comp of Sting for 100 bucks. If you are into that type of thing of collecting matches on disc his site is really helpful. PWTorrents is cool too if you have the dvds and want to burn them yourself. IVP is always good for puro, mexico, and europe.

As far as matches I wish I had on tape I would have liked to see some of the old NWA title matches. I've found some Lou Thez comps, but I'd like to see Jack Brisco and all the old school champions on tape.

I also wish I still had Hart winning the belt from Flair on tape.

I had a couple episodes of "Prime Time Wrestling" from 1987. I remember a few of the matches being Tito Santana vs. Nikolai Volkoff, The Hart Foundation vs. Tito Santana and the Junkyard Dog, and one involving the Islanders. Gorilla Monsoon brings Bobby Heenan to the Doctor's to have his neck checked out. Later, he gives him a gold brick. The movie "Howard the Duck" was also on that tape. Wish I still had it.

Taker/Austin vs. Kane/Mankind vs. The Rock/D'Lo(replaced Owen) vs. The New Age Outlaws from the last Raw before Summerslam 98

dudes, you need to get 24/7 if it is available to you. I have been enjoying the 1997 raws for a awhile now. just got through with the one where Pillman "prays", owen wins the ic title, and the anvil returns at the end to attack austin.

anyhow I had the foresight to record the benoit-jericho vs austin and HHH match when it happened cuz I had a feeling maybe theyd win. so I wound up making a sorta comp tape, with that match, followed by the TLC 3, and a nunch of other matches from that one month period, like both austin-benoit title matches, and even austin vs jericho. its not that great quality (ep mode from a tv/vcr combo, non-stereo model), but glad I have it.

I also have most all raw and smackdowns from the end of 2001-present. though for this year I got a dvd recorder so I have the year in dvd form for all 4 weekly shows (RAW,ECW Impact, and Smackdown)

wish I hadnt taped over some old nitros from 96 and a few raws from 2000

Iron Sheik defending the WWF Title against Tito Santana in Philly. Accidentally taped over it recently and I'm still pissed about it.

I just got that off 24/7 a while ago

anyhow this thread got me thinking and I went and made a 4 hour comp of the benoit/jericho tag team era. back then I was kinda just taping imprtant parts of the shows, sometimes doing homemade clips of matches by using the pause record button. I got everything from the tag title win through the angle-benoit cage match. I still have about 2 hours on another tape left from the week prior to king of the ring, but I didnt want to stretch the record mode to 6 hours cuz the quality is dropped off enough as it is.

but I did additional copies in high quality mode of the tag match vs hhh/austin. tlc 3, and benoit vs austin in calgary (the less remembered RAW match where austin put benoit in the crossface, and mcmahon echoed montreal by demanding the bell be rung, and in edmonton (the better match with the 10 germans spot)

also transferred the last nitro to dvd. Now I got the "vertebreaker" song stuck in my head again, and "primetime" the dmx ripoff song. and I forgot about the filithy animals very last song it is catchy as well (but looking back, Rey-what was up with the horns glued to your head?)

I have a bunch of tapes of WCW and the WWF in 2001 from TV, at least up until WM17, I think a little after the InVasion started too, so that takes care of some gems. Not sure if I have HHH/Austin vs. Jericho/Benoit on it, though. I don't think I do.

I wish I had New Blood Rising on tape. Awful show, but the 3Count/Jung Dragons ladder match is something I wish I could watch, as I remember it being pretty solid. I'm almost positive I have the entire Cruiserweight Tag Team title tourney from Feb-March '01 on tape, so that'd be a nice comp to make one day.

I wish I still had the taped-from-PPV Heat Wave '98. Big mistake to trade it to a friend in exchange for the DX tape right before he was moving to Bellingham. The opening Styles/Douglas/Francine promo was hilarious, and the Dreamer promo where he bashes his head into a locker until it bleeds to put over how he's going to ignore pain to focus on beating the Dudleys was gold. I'd also like to see the full entrances and exits, and all the video packages rather than just the intro vid.

finished with the last 2 hours of tape transfer. Got the CVC vs Edge and Christian match in full, plus the RAW match with Jericho/Benoit/Spike vs Austin/Dudleys (where Jericho debuted his new tron video with the new countdown and sillehoutte of his pose)

but sadly at the time i ran out of tape, so I could only tape a clip of them losing the titles to the Dudleys, but I have pretty much all of their matches as tag champs in full (and some of their singles matches as well)

plus a gem of saturn and terri going out on a double date with Malenko a nd some blonde chick. Plus saturn and terri guest hosting on Heat
