Martz apparently has told some of his confidantes that Smith could be the best quarterback he’s worked with on the pro level. It wasn't for all his off-field transgressions... it was apparently because he missed a "voluntary" off-season workout with the team because he was taking care of family business in Georgia, where his grandmother had died. (She had raised him, so she was practically his mother.) He's not going to file a grievance over it, even though it would be an open-and-shut case as far as the union rules go. He should file the grievance. He won't, because he's trying to rebuild his image and having that long of a suspension on top of a filed grievance would hurt him even more in trying to find a new team, but he got screwed, plain and simple. An interesting move because he was Matt Ryan's teammate at BC so there should be some comfort level there between the two. Ran a 4.49 40 according to NFL Draft Scout and won the Coaches' Award at BC in 2006, "12/04/06 - Coaches' Award, given to the player who exemplifies the coaching staff's attitude toward the game; a performer whose style of play reflects what has been taught and sometimes what simply cannot be taught; this is a person with great football instincts: Tony Gonzalez." 2006: 43 catches, 491 yards, 5 TD. 2005: 28 catches, 414 yards, 5 TD. 2004: 11 catches, 147 yards, 1 TD. 2003: 7 catches, 135 yards, 1 TD. 2002: Redshirt Total: 89 catches, 1187 yards, and 12 TD. Mike Martz is a terrible, horrible, awful coach. His one superbowl win as an OC was his first year on the job. How much can he even be credited for that? Look at that divisional playoff game against Carolina a few seasons ago where he plays for the tie and OT in the red zone. Yeesh. The Lions totally collapsed last year, too. He made the playoffs 4 times and went 3-4 including making it to the 2001 Super Bowl. As far as "mediocre" goes... Here are the stats under his watch. Kurt Warner: 1117/1677 (66.6%) with 14,408 yards (8.59) and 102 TD vs. 65 INT. Sacks = 114 (6.8% of PA) Trent Green: 145/240 (60.4%) with 2,063 yards (8.60) and 16 TD vs. 5 INT. Sacks = 24 (10% of PA) Marc Bulger: 934/1446 (64.6%) with 11,283 (7.80) and 67 TD vs. 49 INT. Sacks = 90 (6.2% of PA) Jon Kitna: 727/1157 (62.8%) with 8276 (7.15) and 39 TD vs. 42 INT. Sacks = 114 (9.86% of PA) Say what you will about the hits his QB takes, but they always have success under him. Every one and their mother could've told you that a 34 year old Kitna was not the greatest fit for his style of offense. He could scramble but made poor decisions and held the ball too long. Alex Smith can scramble well (3.9 YPC including a 6.8 last year on 13 carries) and under the right OC, could be a success. Smith has never had much to work with offensively as his best season came in 2006 when he had as weapons: RB Frank Gore, WR Antonio Bryant, WR Arnaz Battle, and TE Vernon Davis. This year: RB Frank Gore, WR Isaac Bruce, WR Arnaz Battle, WR Bryant Johnson, and TE Vernon Davis. Not a massive improvement but Bruce knows Mike Martz's system and Bryant Johnson will be an underrated slot receiver. I also put the blame of the Lions failure squarely on Rod Marinelli. He's the head coach for a reason and if he wanted to run more, he should've forced that upon Martz. Instead, he let Martz run his position and as a result didn't allow enough balance. From Weeks 7-9 they had 100+ yards rushing, then had -18 and 25 in the next 2 games. Where was Marinelli in all of this? He's the head coach and the overriding figure... Writers are never happy unless the Super Bowl is in a "destination city", like Miami or New Orleans. They bitched INCESSANTLY about Jacksonville before, during, and after the Super Bowl, IIRC, so it's not only a cold-weather thing but a "WAH!!! There's no nightlife!" thing.
