5: We keep hearing that the more Niners offensive coordinator Mike Martz works with QB Alex Smith, the more excited he gets. Martz apparently has told some of his confidantes that Smith could be the best quarterback he’s worked with on the pro level.

I like the sounds of this, but I'll wait and see before I pass any judgment here.

Still too early.

It's amazing that Atlanta's front office can be so inept, but then you have to consider the fact that Tennessee is still around... heh.

Also, anyone wanna take bets on how long it takes Martz before he ends up getting Smith crippled while running his offense?

Odell Thurman got released by the Bengals today.

It wasn't for all his off-field transgressions... it was apparently because he missed a "voluntary" off-season workout with the team because he was taking care of family business in Georgia, where his grandmother had died. (She had raised him, so she was practically his mother.)

He's not going to file a grievance over it, even though it would be an open-and-shut case as far as the union rules go.

Nice to see that it takes five arrests or a missed voluntary workout due to death in the family to lose your job with the Bengals.

He should file the grievance. He won't, because he's trying to rebuild his image and having that long of a suspension on top of a filed grievance would hurt him even more in trying to find a new team, but he got screwed, plain and simple.

Atlanta also signed WR Tony Gonzalez. An interesting move because he was Matt Ryan's teammate at BC so there should be some comfort level there between the two.

Ran a 4.49 40 according to NFL Draft Scout and won the Coaches' Award at BC in 2006, "12/04/06 - Coaches' Award, given to the player who exemplifies the coaching staff's attitude toward the game; a performer whose style of play reflects what has been taught and sometimes what simply cannot be taught; this is a person with great football instincts: Tony Gonzalez."

2006: 43 catches, 491 yards, 5 TD.

2005: 28 catches, 414 yards, 5 TD.

2004: 11 catches, 147 yards, 1 TD.

2003: 7 catches, 135 yards, 1 TD.

2002: Redshirt

Total: 89 catches, 1187 yards, and 12 TD.

Compared to who? Trent Green? Jon Kitna? Kurt Warner? Marc Bulger? Look at those stellar careers. Mike Martz is a terrible, horrible, awful coach. His one superbowl win as an OC was his first year on the job. How much can he even be credited for that? Look at that divisional playoff game against Carolina a few seasons ago where he plays for the tie and OT in the red zone. Yeesh. The Lions totally collapsed last year, too.

Congratulations Alex Smith, you're next in line to be the mediocre Martz QB with a career ended by injury.

In 6 years he went 53-32. He made the playoffs 4 times and went 3-4 including making it to the 2001 Super Bowl.

As far as "mediocre" goes... Here are the stats under his watch.

Kurt Warner: 1117/1677 (66.6%) with 14,408 yards (8.59) and 102 TD vs. 65 INT. Sacks = 114 (6.8% of PA)

Trent Green: 145/240 (60.4%) with 2,063 yards (8.60) and 16 TD vs. 5 INT. Sacks = 24 (10% of PA)

Marc Bulger: 934/1446 (64.6%) with 11,283 (7.80) and 67 TD vs. 49 INT. Sacks = 90 (6.2% of PA)

Jon Kitna: 727/1157 (62.8%) with 8276 (7.15) and 39 TD vs. 42 INT. Sacks = 114 (9.86% of PA)

Say what you will about the hits his QB takes, but they always have success under him.

Every one and their mother could've told you that a 34 year old Kitna was not the greatest fit for his style of offense. He could scramble but made poor decisions and held the ball too long.

Alex Smith can scramble well (3.9 YPC including a 6.8 last year on 13 carries) and under the right OC, could be a success. Smith has never had much to work with offensively as his best season came in 2006 when he had as weapons: RB Frank Gore, WR Antonio Bryant, WR Arnaz Battle, and TE Vernon Davis.

This year: RB Frank Gore, WR Isaac Bruce, WR Arnaz Battle, WR Bryant Johnson, and TE Vernon Davis.

Not a massive improvement but Bruce knows Mike Martz's system and Bryant Johnson will be an underrated slot receiver.

I also put the blame of the Lions failure squarely on Rod Marinelli. He's the head coach for a reason and if he wanted to run more, he should've forced that upon Martz. Instead, he let Martz run his position and as a result didn't allow enough balance.

From Weeks 7-9 they had 100+ yards rushing, then had -18 and 25 in the next 2 games. Where was Marinelli in all of this? He's the head coach and the overriding figure...

The owners voted to terminate the current CBA after 2011. Probably looking at an uncapped year in 2010 and maybe a lockout in 2011 if all hell breaks loose.

Just saw the Ryan signing. That's an unreal amount of money.

From Rotoworld:

Falcons agreed to terms with No. 3 pick Matt Ryan. NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports it's a six-year deal worth a maximum value of $72 million. $34.75 million is guaranteed.

Charles Grant was indicted for involuntary manslaughter.

That's not good

Is this about the bar fight where he got shot last year?

If not, WTF is that guy's major malfunction?

EDIT- Found it...

This is from the fight where he got stabbed last year. The DA pretty much charged 6 people who were in the fight with involuntary manslaughter despite most of them clearly not being the shooter.

Bears should take a look at Schweigert. I mean, who the hell else do they have for the secondary. He can keep the Ort company.

More Rotoworld news...

Bears CB Ricky Manning Jr. has lost his nickel back job to Danieal Manning.

Next, he might lose his roster spot. Manning Jr., who's due $1.95 million in 2008, is coming off a poor season in which he had no interceptions. The Bears can go with cheaper options in sub-packages this season.

Bears OT John Tait has moved to right tackle.

Tait is a stronger run blocker than pass protector, so the Bears' offense should benefit from this. John St. Clair worked at left tackle during Wednesday's OTA, but rookie Chris Williams will be in there before long.

Other news...

Kansas City Chiefs signed Oregon State RB Dantrell Savage to a 2 year contract.

NASHVILLE, TN, May 21, 2008 — To enhance the development of elite football talent from around the world, NFL clubs have agreed to expand the league’s International Practice Squad Program. The action was taken at the NFL Spring Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia on May 20.

The initiative, which enters its fifth year in 2008, will for the first time feature 16 players joining the practice squads of NFL teams.

The players will be selected and assigned to teams in the AFC North, AFC West, NFC South and NFC West in time for training camp. Participating players will be announced in mid-July.

Since the program’s inception in 2004, 22 players have participated, including 11 last year and nine that have participated twice.

Good move with Tait. That can only be a big step up for the Bears line. The offense won't be good, but the defense really worries me more.

Meh, Houston got robbed. Indy gets their precious little Superbowl for their new stadium where they can watch the Patriots win a ring in their hometown..

More news...

- A source close to the situation confirmed that the Philadelphia Eagles have dismissed vice president of player personnel Jason Licht. Licht's departure has not been announced, but it was reported in yesterday's Trenton Times. A team spokesman said the Eagles had no comment on the matter. Word around the organization is that Licht had a falling-out with vice president of football administration Howie Roseman, the protege of team president Joe Banner. Apparently, Licht was told earlier in the offseason to seek other employment, that his job would end with last month's NFL draft.

- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers brought in free agents wide receiver Eric Moulds and wide receiver Bryan Gilmore for a visit on Monday. No word is available as to whether the team plans to offer either player a contract.

- Free agent tight end Erron Kinney has formally retired from professional football.

- The Green Bay Packers announced on Thursday that wide receiver Bill Schroeder has announced his retirement from professional football.

- Free agent WR Eddie Kennison worked out with the Buccaneers on Monday and the 13-year veteran singled out the team on his short list. "Tampa Bay is one of the clubs we're talking to right now. It is the only one he agreed to visit," Kennison's agent John Hamilton said. "I think he would really love to play for Coach Jon Gruden." Kennison's 2007 season was derailed by a torn hamstring that limited him to 13 receptions.

Don't the Bucs already have enough old WR's?

Here's their Wide Receiver list... I'd take Kennison over some guys.

Joey Galloway, Ike Hilliard, Michael Clayton, Maurice Stovall, Antonio Bryant, Dexter Jackson, Michael Spurlock (KR)

And it only took one day to get a whiny "A Super Bowl in a cold weather city? OH NOES" article from ESPN.

Writers are never happy unless the Super Bowl is in a "destination city", like Miami or New Orleans.

They bitched INCESSANTLY about Jacksonville before, during, and after the Super Bowl, IIRC, so it's not only a cold-weather thing but a "WAH!!! There's no nightlife!" thing.
