Wrestlemania XXIV Discussion Thread

I thought Wrestlemania 26 was going to be in Phoenix? If WM is held again in Orlando again, it won't be until 2012.

Just thought it looked cool..

I'm guessing because of the logistics and everything, and I think I mentioned this earlier... but this was the first Wrestlemania I can remember in a long time where Vince didn't have a part in the show at all - no announcing, match, or angle.

As for Wrestlemania returning to Orlando... why do you think the Super Bowl returns to the same cities each year? Those cities know how to host an event, and by all indications, Orlando went all out for this one. The WWE has been nothing but positive in terms of what the city and its management did in relation to landing and hosting the event.

Vince was training for a match, however when the card came together he was left off. He wanted to put his working out to good use, hence the Flair vs McMahon match a few weeks ago on Raw.

He was probably going to be in a match with Finlay and Hornswoggle. However when JBL/Jericho crapped out due to terrible ring chemistry (the feud was supposed to culminate at WM) the deck had to be reshuffled. I guess they could have did JBL and Vince vs Finlay and Hornswoggle...

I think Vince should stay behind the camera anyways. Raw is stacked with talent, there is no need for him to be eating up television time. Let the top heels be the top heels, instead of being overshadowed by the played out evil Owner/GM/Authoritative figure.

I won't go into many details since my thoughts echoes pretty much most of the thread.

- The biggest pop in the living room was the Orton win as no one saw that coming.

- I hope the plane buzz will be edited off the DVD

- Flair crying as he took the pinfall and Michaels crying at his head like Flair had just died was an epic finish to an instant classic.

- The Edge/Taker match took a while to took off but, as good as the match got, it was ruined by the awful announcing job. It seemed all you could hear was "THE STREAK IS OVER !!!!!" every 20 seconds.

- "Marching band" Cena doesn't surpasses Cello-Kane as far as orchestrated themes goes :P

Just some quick thoughts since alot is already being sentimented here by others....

The production on this show was fucking phenominal and made it stand out more than ever as the "Super Bowl of Wrestling" from that standpoint. The fireworks in addition to the usual pyro made certain entrances and after-match ceremonies that much more special. That's the advantage of being outdoors, in that you can do so much more in certain ways. But everyone from the lights, sounds, camera-work (those shots of Flair and Michaels staring each other down after HBK slapped Flair and busted his lip were top notch), video packages, and everything else other than maybe the exception of Michael Cole and Coach annoucing, really was just off the charts. The HD element really has given WWE a really polished and visually fresh experience.

Ranking this one up there with my personal favorites, I will say this much. It's right up there in quality overall with Mania XVII for sure, which was my perennial favorite along with Mania III and Mania X as well (all of the noted have their own special qualities, definately each not just for the straight wrestling quality). So, depending how this views over and over (and I've already watched it twice and am itching to throw the recorded copy of it back in the DVD player already) this is probably going to be my favorite Mania of them all.

The pace of the show and match placements I thought were right on. As far as match quality, you had about as average of a Umaga/Batista match as you can get, and a women's match that was pretty expectedly rough (saved only for the lights going out to keep me entertained), but everything I felt was good to great to unbelievably awesome. Flair/Michaels is going to be one of those matches that people will remember for history, and is undoubtadly one of the biggest and emotional "Mania moments" ever. Given the whole experience of it all, that may be the first match I can really say I could throw a ***** down to, really. Just absolutely off the charts great stuff there.

Edge/Taker, as I was thinking, was certainly the show stealer as well. I was actually thinking Edge was going to get put over there, and he did, even though he lost. Orton also was put over very strong in the triple threat, which was shocking to see, but not completely surprised given Raw's ending last week (where Orton jobbed to Flair). That triple threat match, I think, was just all around tremendous stuff, and what a finish. MITB I thought was, to me, the strongest of that series so far just given the fact they worked that match so tight to show that everyone was given fair shake in getting over in there, too. Very creative stuff here too.

The rest of the show certainly wasn't the average ppv filler stuff, so all in all, this show really delivered more than it ever has to me.

Favourite moment was JBL deciding to pelt a trash can at Hornswoggle when he was just watching outside the ring.

Overall, it was a very solid Mania, with no match being subpar in my opinion, including Kane squashing Chavo in emphatic fashion. However, it was almost ruined for me with back to back booking decisions I didn't like. I thought the ending spot was sick for the triple threat match, but I totally wanted Cena to kick out and have the match go another 3-4 minutes. I felt like it could've been that much better if they would have had a little more time. I also wanted Triple H to win the match. Right afterward, we had a really good Mayweather/Show match, but again, I didn't think it should have ended where it did. I think Show should have gotten up at 7 or so from the brass knucks, but still be really dazed. Another punch from Mayweather would have then done it. I think it would have helped Show even more as a monster.

The reason I started feeling bad about the show at that point was the fact that no one was seeming to get that big revenge win at Mania, which is a staple of the show. Finlay didn't beat JBL, no one beat Orton, and Mayweather didn't get his cocky mouth shut. It was by no means a bad show or even an average show; it was very, very good, but I think it could have been even better with some slightly different finishes.

Great show, as I also saw it, what I was gonna say was pretty much stated already.

That Taker-Edge match, when it picked up, was just great. That ending was something. Also glad to see them doing something with Punk.

I too also loved that Hornswoggle garbage can shot.

Glad to see that I wasn't the only person that liked seeing Hornswaggle get nailed on the outside by the trashcan.

One thing I really liked about this year's Mania......particularly.......

In all of the main matches, the finishes were really creative and unique. Think about it, between the MITB finish, Flair/Michaels (with SO much drama and emotion involved within it), Triple Threat (just creative in the sense as Orton goes over Cena finally, but not without the help of HHH), Mayweather/Show (that was about the only way I could accept a Mayweather win other than if there was a run-in on Show), and Edge/Taker (submission out of nowhere when it seemed like they were building to Edge actually winning).

Job well done there, WWE.

The trashcan bit would have been top notch if he beaned him in the melon. As it was it was a leg shot. Funniest "non-funny" thing was without a doubt Charles Robinson hauling ass to the ring. Lamest "funny" moment was Mic Foley's cameo. The guy is so dated and played out I cringe whenever I see him on camera.

I actually thought the fact that JBL didn't hit Hornswoggle right on made it even funnier. I could watch that moment over and over again.

I disagree. I thought what made this show better were the unexpected winnings of CM Punk and Orton. Why should HHH win? I didn't see anything new or exciting from another Helmsley title run besides a fresh and potentially fun feud with JBL over the WWE Championship. Randy Orton deserved to win more than anything.

JBL and Mayweather weren't going to lose, I knew that from the get-go.

Edge winning would've been great, but honestly The Undertaker HAD to win since they've been building up his revenge for like what 10 months? Not only did Edge swipe the title off him in a blindside match, but he also cost him the title again at SSeries. I was shocked WWE waited this long to provide the pay-off so kudos to them for doing that.

REALLY Hyped up for Sunday, plus the local movie theater is having a Q&A and autograph session with Rick Martel~! before the show.

For the two of you who might care, The Model was in rare form on sunday night:

He may or may not have sprayed some Arrogance, and put some guy in the Quebec Crab. Then he took pics with fans (w/AWA title replica) and signed stuff for free for just about everybody there (over 300), GREAT guy.

Tidbits from PWI:

-- There was an incident backstage at the Hall of Fame ceremony with some of the developmental talents being chewed out by management for "disrespecting" the main roster by eating at catering before they arrived.

-- Big Daddy V was pulled out of the battle royal due to contracting a bout of pneumonia. He was originally replaced by Matt Striker, but they decided on Stevie Richards.

-- The only contracted performers that were not in Orlando for the weekend were Boogeyman and Johnny Jeter. No word on why either weren't there. Of course, Highlander Robbie McAllister was sent home after TNA showed him in the crowd at the live Impact.

-- The original plan for Undertaker's entrance was to have 24 druids, but they decided to cut it down to 10.

A few delayed thoughts:

- The triple threat was one of the better triple threat matches in a good while. One of the reasons is because they didnt stick with "dump one guy out of the ring and have him play dead for 5 minutes to make it 1 on 1 and then have him come back and dump someone out for 5 minutes and repeat". Orton trying get pins on Cena and HHH in succession numerous times was great. I also really liked that Orton won.

- In the prediction thread I said something along the lines of "Batista will get beat on for 10 minutes and then Batista bomb Umaga like the past 10 minutes never happened". The botched Batista bomb was easily explained (His back hurt) but he still botched it and he gave one of the worst performances of the night, probably worse than any of the divas in the match (including Ashley) and thats saying something.

- They should have smartened up and made the divas match a 6 person intergender match with Santino and Lawler. One thing that I will say is that they kept going on durring the blackout which suprised me, but it was still an awful match.

- Money in the Bank was pretty good, there were a few cool spots (morrison's moonsault with the ladder and when they stuck the one ladder into the other and tried to climb it) and the fact it wasn't quite dark yet added a bit to the match but it wasn't as good as it had been in the past. The ending was really good though and CM Punk was really the only logical choice to win it though I was hoping for MVP.

- I was expecting more from JBL and Finlay but it was still pretty good for an opening match. One thing I thought was weird was seeing Finlay put a table up in the corner like he did since thats how he tore his leg all to hell back in WCW. Air Finlay was awesome, and Im glad they didnt try any stupid crap like turning Hornswaggle on Finlay.

- Big Show/Mayweather was actually 10x better than I thought it would be despite the fact that it was horrendously boring early on. Show beating on his posse and then running them down when they tried to leave was when it picked up. Im not going to say that Mayweather earned the $20 million though.

Had he tried a wrestling move or two maybe.. (I thought for sure theyd have him climb the turnbuckle and try to hit Big Show only to have him catch Mayweather and repeat what he did on RAW few weeks back).

- Theres only so much that can be said about Flair/HBK and Im not going to spew it again but it clearly will be the match people will remember WM24 for and it was a damn shame they didnt put it on after the lame women's crap at least.

- Edge/Taker was good, Coach sucked on Commentary and I got tired of hearing "Ultimate Oppertunist" from Cole and that probably hurt my opinion of the match slightly. I really thought Edge was going to turn in to Austin a la x-7 with the ref out and just beat on Taker, or possibly try and get himself intentionally DQed but the finish was better than that.

The thing that caused his WCW injury was that it happened on a house show and since it was a house show, I guess WCW just didn't care to gimmick the tables. Finlay was probably a lot more trusting of WWE.

Read a Meltzer column through Yahoo sports that Mayweather's payoff was closer to $3.5 million.

Yahoo has had more up on Wrestlemania than I thought they would. The coverage that WWE and the event got makes Mayweather's price tag worth it, to me. Especially if it was $3.5 M.

He's worth every penny at 3.5 million. They had mainstream coverage of their product...that came off in a pretty positive light...as opposed to the usual steroid, wrestlers dying early and Benoit killing people.

Good investment.

...and he also ruled in that match.
