WWF Wrestling Observer News (2.17.86)
DrVenkman PhD replied to Bruiser Chong's topic in General Wrestling
Good stuff, keep it coming. I also echo the above sentiments about an over the top gay character not drawing heat in San Francisco. -
We normally don't change the prices of PPVs to convert prices and I have no idea why they'd start now with the dollar being almost even.

I was dissapointed to see the PPV have a $25 price tag for it in Canada on Cogeco. I thought it was supposed to be cheaper (and based on Hawk's comment, I still think it is).

I'm pretty sure I don't have it on a compilation so I'll look into it. Also, having decided to go 'old school' and purchase Zelda 1 and 3 last week (screw you, Link's Adventure!), I find myself totally lost on the Hyrule overworld. It's funny to think we used to play games that gave you absolutely no indication of where to go and made due because the game came with a map. I only found the 1st dungeon because I had a vague memory of having to walk north along a body of water to a bridge. Great fun, though. Zelda III, on the other hand, is full of exposition telling you what to do and has a map with flashing markers. I suppose you could say it reduces challenge but it is a great refinement on the first Zelda and guarantees that game's placement in history as one of the best ever.

So, Shining Force sounds like something I've heard old school Sega Genheads talk about before. Worth the download?

I Put My Finger on Why WCW Seemed So Intolerable At Times
DrVenkman PhD replied to zappafrank's topic in General Wrestling
I like how Tony always welcomes us to hour #2, the hour that set the standard for pro wrestling television (SKeith's running joke on this in MNW rants is pretty funny). -
No Nitro... interesting. WWE runs 1 hour Raw's forever and has no incentive to force a growth change or new business attitude, with main events like Flash Funk vs Billy Gunn amusing the 2.3 million people still watching. Steve Austin's natural charisma still cancels out his Ringmaster character (If he still goes to ECW as a transition it doesn't really matter (and obviously no Monday Nyquil promos) and he becomes a good TV, house show, and PPV draw (after all, no one is watching him fight main event opponents every week on TV) but the contraints of the company never going into full Attitude mode keep him from becoming THE draw of the 90s. WCW maintains their wrestling-orietned fan base while Hogan brings in some casual fans from the Fed. He does some good PPV business early on but the old school WCW fans won't support him and the new WCW fans get bored his act. WCW and Hogan agree to turn him heel for a dream feud with Sting. Interest in WCW rises and Saturday NIght does some ok numbers for a weekend show. The Omni also does some good numbers for the touring Sting/Hogan feud. After a big PPV blow off (which Sting wins), Hogan really has nothing left to do and retires / makes cameo/nostalgia appearances for WWF. ECW is never "raided" as badly as it actually was because without the Monday Night Wars, neither company needs to increase their roster size drastically. Established stars that stay longer result in more competitive PPV buyrates, especially when several fans become upset with the old and tired concepts WWF and WCW are putting forth. The rise of the internet ups ECW's awareness and word of mouth and PPV numbers go up again while their touring shows are financially sucessful. By 2000, both WWF and WCW begin to do refined, high-production value versions of what's going on in ECW. Fans seem to be really into this, especially Steve Austin. WWF goes for it while WCW remains family friendly. By 2002, though ECW still has some loyal fans, advertisers are not willing to support ECW, they have no TV deal, and they begin to lose money. Heyman's poor business skills and bounced cheques cause established stars to head for the big two. ECW eventually runs out of money and folds. By 2004, the Attitude era is in full effect and Vince Russo, harbouring incredibly risque ideas for 8 years in his head, books the craziest stuff ever seen in wrestling. WWE has a huge money year with lots of high school kids buying shirts and talking about wrestling at school because it's just so cool. WCW tries to be edgey while following Time Warner's strict BS&P guidelines. They do well enough to stay in business but are obviously losing ground to the WWE. By 2006 Vince Russo says he is "burnt out" and quits WWE. WWE has already lost several sponsors due to Vince Russo's booking and hope they can keep their large fanbase with a more wrestling based show. They do for a bit, but since in this scenario this happens in 2006 and not 2000 (meaning no Rock or Austin), their current stars only take them so far before business bottoms out in 2008. WCW also brought in Russo in 2005 and he violated every single one of the BS&P rules, causing WCW to have no TV and eventually fold. WWE buys WCWs assets and books an invasion angle that revitalizes their business.

Well I'd like to think WWE wouldn't book such a ridiculous match unless 1. Someone booked it half-asleep, WWE.com printed it, and someone else will discover this booking and cancel it. 2. They have a really good idea (meaning an idea that has been thoroughly planned, not necessarily an idea that is good) on where and what they want to do with this and how to build it up (perhaps Val Venis is the new Million Dollar Champion and will take part?) on Raw and explain the meaning behind why such a thing would be booked and how it effects the participants.
-
Chat really does lessen the show threads. Oh well. It's too bad they didn't have someone, maybe Jerry Lawler, explicitly explain the rules of the Bullrope match on Raw before the Bash. Maybe WWE.com should have posted something about pinfalls counting too, just so no one was confused.
-
The champions only match sounds funny. I'm interested to see how they pull that off tonight.

Sunflower says it's supposed to be there Wednesday.

I have stopped quoting for the sake of goofing around on a slow forum day, anyway. If I reply to something he said 13 posts up, yeah, I'll probably have to quote it. I also have no idea how I got lumped into "turning almost every thread into a bitch fest" but thankfully Andrew corrected the matter before I could (I wasn't sure I was even going to bother, because I have nothing against treble and didn't want to argue the matter any further and made that more or less clear, but then Ripper stirred it up and I felt the need to justify that... and so on). WWM: I hope you enjoy SOTN. I haven't played it since 1999 but I recall it being good (I'm not super at those games but a friend of mine seemed to enjoy it). Games that are hyped for a decade before someone finally plays them sometimes build up an amount of hype that can in no way ever be lived up to in the present. I can't begin to express how disappointed I was when I finally played Sonic CD just a few years ago.

Looking over the schedule a bit more closely, I see things are spaced out next month so there's only one TNT, one Primetime (hype for SummerSlam 89), and 3 weeks between MNWs. Then I noticed the week MNW would normally have been there (instead of the following week), it's the last Raw before SummerSlam 97 which is cool.
-
And the three hour Nitros haven't started being shown yet on 24/7, right? I have no problem with using a jobber match to fill out a three hour show but there's no excuse to have jobber matches on two hour shows. i agree the more i look at it, what point did Regal/Prince Iaukea really have It was their take on Rock beating HHH for the IC title. I have no idea why WCW would bother copying Raw's ideas at this point - especially that one - but that's what it looked like 10 years ago and what it looks like today.
-
I'd be totally for that move, but it's probably a special SummerSlam hype deal.
-
Ed Helms was indeed good in that movie. Jonah Hill too. Anyway, why is the Creed quote not reinstated yet?
-
Probably not. I'm not trying to say he didn't deserve it but he's one of those guys that was in the right place at the right time and was given the right character in the fall of 1990. I can't see his career path being any different than Dan Spivey if he had stayed teaming with him in WCW. Here's one I thought of based on 24/7 talk: Would WrestleMania 13 be considered one of the weaker Manias if Austin vs Hart was the world title match? Move for move, match for match, result for result, the show would be exactly the same. No need to ponder if Bret being champion would have stopped him from doing the complaining heel gimmick or if Austin having his big title bout at Mania 13 would have made Mania 14 (the kick off of the Fed's revival) less special. It's just that some shows get great reviews soley for having a great main event and a few decent undercard bouts, I can't help but think if Austin/Hart was the main event, people would rank WM13 much higher.

It's going to be on the March 17th MNW. March 31st is the episode I am eagerly anticipating (Hart Foundation!)

Colbert's gotta win something this year. "I think you've made a terrible mistake" - John Stewart winning an Emmy over Colbert last year.
-
Not quite, but almost. Next Raw: ECW Invasion while half the roster is out of the country. Raw after that: Germany Raw (featuring Owen Hart vs Bulldog's awesome European title match). So, maybe after that.

Devil Kings? Didn't that the game have a preview video all the way back in CCC Vol 1?
