chaosrage Posted October 31, 2003 Report Posted October 31, 2003 I got the set yesterday and I've gotta say that watching the clipped up Bret/Owen match, it doesn't come across too well. It does when it runs in its full length, but I swear, the way that they clipped it made it seem so repetitive, since seemingly every clip involved Bret almost getting out of the cage and then Owen pulling him back in by his hair. It's a great match, but it doesn't really come across that way here. They clipped Bret/Owen? They said it would be complete!

Slayer Posted November 1, 2003 Report Posted November 1, 2003 Just got done watching Michaels/Jannetty... not a very good match, but Scott Levy is killer on commentary Oh yeah, and I still hate the "escape to win" concept
Guest JumpinJackFlash Posted November 1, 2003 Report Posted November 1, 2003 I watched the main feature and the complet matches last night: Bret-Owen is amazing! Maybe better than their Wrestlemania match I got used to the F being blurred out in the Attitude Era matches Angle-Edge was a great cage match! It had an awesome back suplex off the turnbuckle. I like the old matches. It brings back the old school feeling of the cage matches, and its great to own rare matches. Bob Backlund! Bruno Sammartino is pretty good. I had not even seen his face before watching this DVD. Magnum TA/Blanchard was great. It didn't have many wrestling moves, but it was supposed to show that they just wanted to kill each other. That you can see with the stake and them just punching each other and hitting the microphone on each other. The Easter Eggs are good I can't wait to see the extras Overall, best WWE DVD....until Ric Flair!
Styles Posted November 1, 2003 Report Posted November 1, 2003 Its been ordered and on its way! I don't understand why someone would not want to see the classic Flair matches just because the production isn't WWF quality. The lighting is good enough, and it's in DVD quality.
geniusMoment Posted November 1, 2003 Report Posted November 1, 2003 The production did not have to be WWF quality. I wanted at least AWA quality. I still liked the dvd. Maybe part of the reason I did not like much of the NWA stuff was because, with the exception of Tully-Magnum, most of the matches were not very good. Perhaps if I saw a great match the lighting would not matter as much.

You owe it to yourself as a wrestling fan to watch the Flair/Steamboat matches.
UseTheSledgehammerUh Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 I really liked this DVD...haven't watched HBK/Marty yet, though. The lighting is fine, stop crying. Anyway, WHAT ABOUT SCHIAVONE'S MUSTACHE? HAHA! Tully/Magnum is sweet. I love all these historical highlight packages. Magnum's Belly to Belly was just...wow. Great FIGHT. Anyone catch the trash thrown in the ring after Garvin wins the belt from Flair? Bret/Owen, my favorite feud ever, and a great match. I wanted the "You're gonna cry a river!" promo though. How come Bruno and Larry Z is like 5 seconds long? Eh. Bret/Yankem has no place on here. Coulda put Steiners/Money Inc., whatever. Good stuff. Great DVD.

the pinjockey Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 If by IS you mean ISN'T, then yes the phrase is cut off your nose despite your face.
The Czech Republic Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 I don't know what I was going for there.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 Bret/Yankem has no place on here. Coulda put Steiners/Money Inc., whatever. It was on there so Lawler could share his nosebleed anectode. I didn't mind it myself.
snuffbox Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 Bret/Yankem has no place on here. Coulda put Steiners/Money Inc., whatever. good call, that was a great tv match.

Would of made a sweet extra in place of HBK/Jannetty. But, beggars can't be choosers and what we got was just fine.
UseTheSledgehammerUh Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 :::begs AND chooses::: I also would have liked The Rock Vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin from the Raw after WM 17. It fit the DVD perfectly b/c it illustrated two HATED rivals going at it and one of them getting pummeled into the cage at the end.

Jack_Bauer Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 Does anyone know if the Ric Flair DVD is gonna be released over here in the UK ?

Guest ManKinnd Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 The color guy in HBK/Jannety is the absolute worst commentator I've ever heard in WWE/F, maybe in all of wrestling. He seems like he doesn't even care about the match, and just wants to shoot the shit with Monsoon. Awful, awful stuff, plus the match sucked. Waste of 13 minutes. At least Shiovane and Cole get excited about the match, this guy is either complaining about it, downplaying the whole thing, calling the wrestlers names, or talking about something totally irrelevant.

UseTheSledgehammerUh Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 Isn't Johnny Polo (aka Raven) the commentator for that match? I've yet to watch it... I heard some positive reviews earlier in this thread about him.

Scott Levy (aka Raven, Johnny Polo at the time of this match) did commentary on the match with Gorilla, but I thought he was hilarious
razazteca Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 The comments about the Doors was funny. "You know the Doors....they were popular when you were my age"
Bruiser Chong Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 Yes that was Rave/Scotty Levy/Johnny Polo. He was doing the commentating with Gorilla for CV during this time and while he was no Heenan, he certainly wasn't the worst. I take it you've never seen any matches called by Sean Mooney and Alfred Hayes? The match itself is quite bad, although what can you expect since it was a small crowd and a dark match. I would've loved to see Steiners/Money Inc., as well. If they were gonna go with some older WWF footage, they should've added in the steel cage stuff with Sammartino, Savage, Santana, and Adonis. Those were great matches.
Guest Choken One Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 um...Bruno WAS in the dvd... Savage is "x"ed by WWE right now... What classic Santana cage match?
Bruiser Chong Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 I'm talking about the tag team cage match between Savage/Adonis and Sammartino/Santana. Probably one of the best WWF tag team cage matches I've seen. Sammartino also had a fun cage match with Piper at the Boston Garden back in 1986, as well, that would've been nice to see there.
Guest ManKinnd Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 "Any guy who goes out of the door is a wimp, a real man will climb over the top." Something to that effect. Realize how many legends won cage matches by walking out the door, like, say, some that were ON THE DVD. Don't downplay the wrestlers. It's the worst thing a commentator can do. He treats both guys like jokes, and now that I know that is Raven (that voice was familiar), I'm surprised, because I thought he knew wrestling very well.
The Ghost of bps21 Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 The only thing that really upset me about the DVD was the exclusion of the Sammartino/Zbysko match in full. They barely showed clips of it in the program...and I still want to see it.

The Johnny Polo character was just trying to rile Gorilla up. Plus, it was a CV match. It's like a HeAT match, as Harry Doyle would say, "Ah, nobody's watchin' anyways." As for Sammartino/Zbyzsko, check out Best of WWF Volume 1 if you can find it anywhere. The match isn't complete but it isn't as clipped to shreds as in the dvd. Plus, the original airing of the exhibition match (in better VQ) to set it up is on it too along with the weigh-in.
