People or things in sports that make you feel old

Recommended Posts

Delmon Young makes me feel old.

Delmon was the #1 pick in the June Amateur draft in the Majors. He's making his pro baseball debut in the Arizona Fall League on the taxi squad (that plays twice a week) and he's 11 for 19.

Delmon isn't even 2 months older than I am.

And I'm turning 18 in November.

Man... I feel like I haven't done anything if somebody who'd be in my grade here in Missouri is on his way to stardom in Baseball. :D

Hey I'm turning 18 in November too...this Monday actually.

Anyway, when I look at how the Yankees have changed since I was a kid...and how my view of them changed. I used think they were untouchable, unbeatable, then Rivera faultered day after my birthday in that faitful World Series. Also thinking that almost that entire 1996 team that is still forever glorified in my mind is pretty much all gone. All we have left is Derek Jeter, who will be 30 next season, Bernie Williams, in his mid 30's, Jorge Posada, 31, who wasn't on that playoff roster at all, Mariano Rivera, early to mid thirties, and Andy Pettitte, 31, who may be leaving. I still think of them all as kids and they have all had 8+ year careers already and have long be considered "veterans."

I grew up too fast...I've been dwelling on the big 1-8 for a while now.

I remember when Shawn Kemp was the man and I had his autograph on a limited edition poster of him dunking on the Space Needle. Met him in person too and the dude was nice and chatted with me only being in the 4th grade at the time.

I remember during the mid 90's, Michael Jordan had that HUGE run with the Bulls. It was just awesome seeing his success with the Bulls. I remember the time he supposedly taking his final shot against the Jazz, and put them way into the lead. Jordan even made Space Jam. I LOVED that movie when I was little. Reminds me of the good old times.....

Bah, 18 year olds complaining about being old. Here's old for you:

-Tracy McGrady is now in his 7th year in the NBA and I'm almost eight months older than him.

-I've seen Reggie Jackson and Kareem Abdul-Jabar play in person.

-I remember when the football Cardinals played in St. Louis.

-I remember when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Mariners were the laughing stocks of their sports. Okay the Clippers still are in the NBA.

-At my first A's game ever they still were wearing their gold (err yellow) jerseys. Dave Kingman was batting clean up for the A's. Mark McGwire was still three months from making his major league debut.

Check, check, check, check and check.

Oh, and I'm 4+ years older than Beckett...

The fact that almost every athlete I looked up to is either retired, about to retire, or simply not as good as they used to be: Mike Tyson, Ken Griffey Jr., Reggie Miller, Larry Johnson, Muggsy Bouges, Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, Tim Hardaway, Mark Jackson, Magic Johnson, Penny Hardaway, Grant Hill, Shawn Kemp, Gary Payton, Deion Sanders, Andre Rison, Eric Metcalf, Webster Slaughter, Bernie Kosar, Michael Irvin, Barry Sanders, Warren Moon, Randall Cunningham, Junior Seau...

For me it has to be when I heard about some football or basketball player in his 9th or 10th year and I think, "Wow! I remember when that guy was in college!"

Plus, I now recognize most of the newer coaches from their playing days. Coaches used to be way old guys who I thought retired from playing way before I was born, but now they are players I remember from when I was in grade or high school.

I guess in terms of feeling like my time has all of a sudden passed me by that happened a couple of years ago when a chick I used to swim with (competitively of course), and be a lot better than in terms of results in our respective divisions, was racing in the National Champs while I sat on the couch resting my 7th beer on my beer gut.

Seeing the sons or even daughters of athletes, I remember playing at the relative peak of their careers.

Darryle Strawberry and Patrick Ewing both have sons playing college hoops this year.

I'm only 18, but a few things make me notice that I'm getting old.

When the Bulls won their first title back in 1991. It seems like yesterday that I was six years old watching it on NBC. That was 12, going on 13, years ago.

There's also seeing Frank Thomas as an aging slugger than kind of shocking to me. He was putting up numbers better than Lou Gerhig for crying out loud.

Seeing Doc Rivers, Bill Lambeer, Derek Harper and all of those guys on the bench.

Can't forget about remembering when Harold Miner was the next MJ.

Remembering when Barry Bonds was really skinny...heh

I drank a beer with Dick Butkus.

Not really, but that'd be pretty fuckin' cool.

I'm not old. Everything that I remember from sports happened in the recent past.

My earliest sports memory is Keith Smart's game winning shot in the 87 NCAA final.

I feel old when I read what makes you guys feel old. I'm almost ELEVEN years older than a lot of the people that you guys are naming.

I remember Lemieux, Jordan, & Clemens as rookies. I remember when the NHL only had 21 teams. I remember watching the Oilers begin their dynasty. I remember when the Braves were horrible. I remember The Boz being considered a great linebacker (college, obviously).

I'm old.

Ken Griffey Jr. makes me feel old.

I remember him being an energetic kid on the field always wearing a smile. Now he seems like a bitter guy and that transformation makes me feel like I'm old. The only highlights of his for the past three years I can remember are the times he rounds third and tears something.

I feel old when people talk about Bo Jackson like he was all hype.

I feel old when I see guys I am older than talking about their club extending them for a fourth year.

I feel old when no one remembers how good COrlis Williamson and Scotty Thurman were in college.

I feel old when people talk about the Fab Five like it was an enernity ago.

I feel old when no one realizes who dominant UNLV used to be.

I feel old when I realize that none of the Triplets are playing for Dallas.

I feel old when people actually think Kobe is better than MJ.

Ditto to all of those.

I remember going to see the *Baltimore* Colts play at Memorial Stadium.

I remember going into the Orioles locker room in 1982, at age 8, and getting my program signed by people like Eddie Murray, Cal Ripken, Jim Palmer, and Earl Weaver.

I remember the Orioles winning it all in 1983.

I remember Len Bias' sudden death in 1986.

I hear about players like Alex Rodriguez accomplishing everything under the sun, and then I realize they're all a couple years younger than I am.

- Monica Seles is about 3 weeks older than me, and she turns the big three-oh this year.

- I remember hockey players not wearing helmets

- I heard Howard Cosell on MNF

- My first football memory is "The Catch" (which may explain why I'm a Niners fan)

- I've been around longer than the Toronto Blue Jays.

- sports movie quote: "Whata the fuck is a Chinese downhill?"
