Lightning Flik 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2004 Hey asshole (and yes I can call you that without being told to go to the "flaming" section, because this thread's TITLE itself is flaming Eagle fan posters)... Asshole, I was at the game at SIX in the AM, playing beerpong, sharing drinks, keeping warm (in a space tent), making friends, meeting girls, telling stories and HAVING fun with COMPLETE STRANGERS. You want to post your fucking stories?!?!?! ONE incident and you wanna fucking start shit on here? Go ahead. At least my team, with more heart and credibility then you will ever have, ADVANCED in the playoffs. He wasn't starting anything really, just stating his opinion (albeit misconstrued), and now we have you going totally off the handle. He even admits that the article made some sense as to why Philly keeps up its rough and tough image in his post. Just because the title was offensive to you, doesn't mean you have to come off as a hurt fanboy, as you just immediately bash his own team and are flamebaiting him right back. This thread is to discuss what the article presents. Not to have you bickering about the choice of the title. That doesn't excuse his choice of the title as it is misleading and can be taken hostily. But you don't make the situation any better either by just blowing off steam and think that since he gets away with it, so can you too. Edit: Fuck Mik beat me to making this post relevent. Damn you! Guest Anglesault Report post Posted January 18, 2004 Or when fans chanted "wifebeater" at Jason Kidd? I never understood the big problem here. Was it ever disputed that he hit his wife?

Spaceman Spiff 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2004 Thank god I'm an Eagles fan in Oklahoma and not in that hell hole. Please. Philly is far from a "hell hole". One of the most historical cities in the entire country, as well as having a weatlh of stuff to do/see, ranging form all 4 major sports (as well as minor ones like lacrosse & indoor soccer) to cultural points of interest (Art Museum, Franklin Institute, etc.) to a thriving nightlife scene. Like any major city, there's parts of the city you don't want to get caught in after dark, but to call Philly a "hell hole" is rather misinformed.

NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted January 19, 2004 I went to a 49ers/Skins game with a Redskins jersey and blanket and I was heckled which was expected and I welcomed it. However I never feared for my life. Now if I went to the Raiders/Skins game, I might think twice because Oakland, much like Philly just have a lot of lowlife fans. Just John 0 Report post Posted January 19, 2004 Well, I supported my Steelers by wearing a Maddox jersey to Arrowhead this season. The worst I got was some incoherent rambling from a drunk, 300+ pound woman and a passing joke from a parking lot attendant. I guess the fans here in KC are nicer than most. I definitely wouldn't do the same in Oakland, Philly, or Cleveland.

It's a problem for A LOT of Northeastern cities --- God only knows why. John Madden said in one of his book long ago that his theory as to why fans seem more rabid in cold-weather areas is that come December/January there's nothing much to do except go to football games. People in CA, for instance, can do more activities in the warm weather (Black Hole loons excluded)...

nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted January 20, 2004 It's not just Philly fans, obviously, but it does tend to be more in the Northeast than anywhere else in the country. For example, during last years football season a bunch of Redskins fans beat the hell out of an Eagles fan so bad that their jersey (formally white) was thought to be a Redskins jersey (maroon red). I've personally seen fights between Bruins fans and Rangers fans (in both Boston and NY) and between Bruins fans and Canadiens fans (in Montreal only). And been in a fight with a Flyers fan at a game here in Boston (his girlfriend talked shit to my girlfriend and tried to fight her, I told him to put a leash on his girlfriend and he spit on me. Best punch I ever threw, one punch knockdown that ended the fight so quickly that security never even got involved.) Having said all that, though, Philly is the one city that scares me to go to wearing my hometeam colors. I'll wear a Bruins sweater in MSG or Montreal or Toronto without fear, but you'd NEVER catch me wearing one in Philly. And I can say that Philly is a hellhole, at least the area around the arenas are. I went to a concert down there, and on the way to the FU Center saw too many people pissing in the subway stations to count. And on the way home, I flagged down a cab who told me that he'd only take me to my hotel for "all the money that you got". I'm sure dirtbags are everywhere, but the worst of Philly is the worst of them all.

nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted January 20, 2004 And on the way home, I flagged down a cab who told me that he'd only take me to my hotel for "all the money that you got". Are you sure it was a cab you hailed? Could you have reported his badge number? Yeah, I'm sure it was a cab. I was pretty fucked up (Phish concert after a long day of drinking and smoking) but was coherent enough to remember it being a cab that I flagged down, and it being an African American driver that told me it'd cost me everything that I had on me. (I'm not implying anything about it being a black guy, just saying that was one of the details that I remember). I didn't even think of catching his number to report later. I ended up catching a ride from these skanky girls that would only drive me to their hotel, so had to foot patrol it another 5 blocks or so at like 4 in the morning. Not the best end to an otherwise great day.
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted January 20, 2004 I went to a Ravens game wearing Patriot gear and the most I got was "Well, we got us a Patriots fan in front of us" Patriots won the game but I didn't act like a jackass. The ones who go to those games wearing the opponent gear and acting like a jackass are asking for it. I actually had a nice chat with the guys at the half, making it clear I wasn't FROM Boston (as if my voice wouldn't have told them) and hyped up their offense which was AMAZING that game. I still cheered for the Pats the whole game but at least we all acted like football fans and not dickheads That game was the year the Pats lost to Green Bay in the Super Bowl and damn what a game. The next year I went to Philly for a PRESEASON game and those assholes acted like it was the Super Bowl. One of them wanted to fight me cause I was wearing a Pats hat, talk about drunk bs. And the Vet WAS a hellhole, which makes sense since most of the fans should have gone to hell. One of them even said "You have no right to clap for our team f*g" after I clapped for a good play by the Eagles. I don't??? I'm sorry, do Eagle fans get special cards that say only THEY can applaud a good individual effort by a Philly player? I'm sure not ALL Eagle fans are like that....but most of the ones around me were jack-offs.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2004 Football fans are nuts like that. I don't go to Philly games enough to make a true assessment of their behaviour, but I can tell you if you happened to sit next to me at a game, I'd be more than happy to discuss your team's merits. Or even *gasp* admit the ump was right after all.
the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2004 I do have to agree with al that the football fans are a different animal. Flyers fans only seem to get nuts at the opposing fans when they start something. During the Leafs-Flyers series last year I only remember one incident and I know that the woman wearing the Leafs jersey was an instigator. Not justifying it, but stuff like that will happen everywhere. Then at one of the Phillies-Red Sox games I went to this year the most anti-Red Sox stuff was booing down their cheers. No real animosity. There was actually someone from Indianapolis sitting behind me at that game and the only crowd reaction he questioned was the fans booing when other fans drop foul balls. Don't go to Sixers games, but I can't really recall hearing about any incidents.
the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2004 I do need to point out that from what I have seen Flyers fans are more likely to fight each other than opposition fans.
Spaceman Spiff 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2004 I've never seen anything in the way of fights/etc. at any Phillies or 76ers games I've been at. I've only been to a handful of Flyers games, but I"ve never seen anything there, either.

I don't have it saved on my hard-drive anymore, or I'd post it now, but has anyone else seen that picture of 2 or 3 Flyers fans beating up on the one Devils fan, right there in the stands? One guy has him in a choke from behind and another is just finished throwing a haymaker at the guys face. Someone made it into one of those "priceless" advertisement parodies. And I doubt the one Devils fan instigated a fight against a group of Flyers fans.
the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2004 Well, I am certainly not going to say it never happens, but at Phillies, Sixers, and Flyers games they are more isolated incidents as opposed to Eagles common stories.
