alfdogg 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2004 I just heard about this on ESPN Radio. I forgot her name, but she's 6-4 and going to Tennessee. Two of the guys she beat were J.R. Smith (I forget where they said he was going), and Joe Crawford, who's going to Kentucky. The other guy is going to I think Alabama, not sure. Discuss. kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2004 If it involves women basketball players, I don't care. Did they all have to dunk from the same hoop, or did she get a lower height?...
Slayer 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2004 If it was anything like Lisa Leslie's "dunk" from a couple years ago, then the science of dunking has fallen hard and fast
Guest Redhawk Report post Posted March 31, 2004 From what I've read, she mostly won because everyone else kept missing their dunks. But, yes, she did dunk on a 10-foot hoop. Her final dunk was a "cover-your-eyes" dunk, like former Celtic guard Dee Brown did in the 1991 Dunk Contest. And again, I didn't see it yet, but I'd be willing to bet that she was getting high scores not so much because her dunks were great, but more for the "Oh my God a girl dunked!" factor. It's like when a short guy or a White guy is in the dunk contest. They can get high scores because of the surprise factor. If you watch the tape, Spud Webb's dunks themselves weren't spectacular, nor were Brent Barry's. But Spud was 5-foot-7 and Barry is White, so they shocked everyone. BTW, there was a girl in the HS dunk contest last year, but she missed every one of her tries. And on another note, what's up with all the male hatred towards women's basketball? (Not necessarily in this thread, just in general.) Sure, I would rather watch guys play, but I can appreciate women's ball. I've covered it many times for my school paper and the radio station. But most guys I know act like women's basketball is poison to the eyes and absolutely refuse to watch it.

When I watch the women's games I see more turnovers than in men's games, more blown layups, more airballed jumpers and more bad passes. So what fundamentals are we talking about? AboveAverage484 0 Report post Posted March 31, 2004 In high school, I used to have a running joke with my friends where all points counted twice and turnovers were divided in half. And what's the big deal with having 20+ boards in a women's game? They shoot like 10% from the floor anyways. And this is just from high school VARSITY basketball. I can only imagine the wretchedness I would feel at watching JV.
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Report post Posted March 31, 2004 I have seen the dunk, and I can report that it was in fact incredibly lame. It wasn't so much a "cover your eyes dunk" as it was a "cover your eyes, dribble, open your eyes, dunk". And it was one of those lame soft one handers that European centers do all the time. Boo-urns. frankly I don't get where this big thing about women dunking came from. She's 6'4". She can jump high. Of course she can dunk. But since college women never do it in games for whatever reason it turned into some sort of urban legend.

2GOLD 0 Report post Posted April 1, 2004 It was very pathetic. She may have thrown some of the least impressive dunks known to basketball and she won because every else couldn't dunk and sorry but because she was a girl. If a guy did the dunks she did, he would have gotten 5-5-5 but she gets 10-9-10 for some of worst dunks in history. The cover the eyes one? She covered her eyes for a second while AT THE FOUL LINE and then uncovered her eyes and slowly went up and barely made it to the rim for the weakness dunk ever. She is going to be an amazing women's basketball player but....I'm sorry, if people are going to make a big deal out of this "win" then I'm calling FOOLS. I really want Women's sports players to quit being treated like they are in the special olympics cause they deserve a lot better. Her dunks were pathetic so rate them as pathetic. Treat her as an equal not "oh, she's a girl so we'll boast her scores". She'll lead Tennessee to at least two or three titles easily but she didn't deserve to win this by a long shot. geniusMoment 0 Report post Posted April 1, 2004 All of her dunks were very basic, she barely got the ball over the rim. The guys were doing all sorts of awesome shit in mid air. This is why I do not want girls playing the in same league as men, at least when scoring is subjective. Its kind of like when Annika Sorenstam came in something like 120th place in that mens golf tournament last year, the media wanted to make a story out of it so they did. Meanwhile since Annika is by far the best womens golfer and did not even make the cut on a golf course hand picked for her to succeed it tells me the difference in the level of play. Why would I watch womens golf if their best golfer isn't even in the top 100. I have the same problem with the WNBA. What am I supposed to do, watch these sports just because there are women playing? Damaramu 0 Report post Posted April 1, 2004 The funniest thing is that one of the local sports radio hosts Mark Rodgers was judging and gave her a good score. So Jim Traber another radio hosts who also does ESPN radio and such comes on and just rips Mark to shreds for what he did. He's like "You only gave her that score because she's a girl! DIDN'T YOU!?" It was absolutely beautiful.
Ripper 0 Report post Posted April 1, 2004 WNBA has better shooting percentages, and higher assit to turnover ratios than their Male counter parts for all those saying the play sloppy ball. I like watching both sports just fine honestly. Heres what I don't get...in golf, what the fuck actually seperates the men from the women. I know in basketball, the ball is smaller and it is more physical and athletic. But its fucking golf. I know the men can probably have stronger initial drives, but how is the short game any more or less disportiontionate due to sex. I would think golf is one of those sports like paddle tennis or fooz ball....if you are good at it, it doesn't matter who or what you are playing, you're just good. What are the other factors that would make it seem that a female golfer isn't in league with the men?

I can only imagine the wretchedness I would feel at watching JV. Two bad high school teams and JV in general does in dead make for some pathetic baseketball. I'm a big fan of College ball, where pepole actually have skill and fat girls aren't out there throwing up a bunch of junk threes. I don't give a fuck about the WNBA, maybe it'd watch a little if they actually played during basketball season. The dunk was mad weak. I think it's actually going to hurt women's ball because ppl are making such a big deal out of it. There's never going to be a whole lot of dunking unless the world sees a big jump in the number of 6'7+ women. The women's game is best when you've got skilled players who can show them off better than in the men's game because no one is going to physically dominate. 2GOLD 0 Report post Posted April 1, 2004 Heres what I don't get...in golf, what the fuck actually seperates the men from the women. I think a major difference is where they tee off from, but don't quote me on that... Distance. That's about it. But this was a slam dunk contest and she threw down dunks that looked like Bryant Reeves was in the contest. This doesn't make me respect women's sports more, it makes me think that sports reporters are trying to threat these women like they are handicapped. Like, "OOOO she can dunk! Nevermind it's a crappy dunk, she can dunk! PERFECT 10s!" Why didn't they just give her a medal and say they would take her to Chuck E Cheese after? What would have made me respect Women's sports more if we start treating it equal and not like they are a novelty act. Her dunks were sad, so give her sad scores. I'm sure she would be more honored to get low scores and just being part of the contest than to be given 10s just because she is a woman who can dunk. Start treating the female athletes equal instead of acting like their most basic of acts are groundbreaking.
ant_7000 0 Report post Posted April 1, 2004 Did the guys missed their dunks? Because they could've done one good dunk to top any of her dunks.
Guest Redhawk Report post Posted April 2, 2004 A lot of the guys missed dunks, but I blame that on the fact that they had to try outlandish shit just to beat her non-deserved score. Parker got 9s and 10s for a basic dunk, so that put the guys in a position to where to had to get a 9-10 on the "male scale," meaning they had to go between the legs and off the backboard and shit. geniusMoment 0 Report post Posted April 2, 2004 Whoever made the comment about golf has obvisiously never played it. The guys courses are much longer than the womens, they do not have the strength, with rare exceptions to compete. Its not just the length either, the grass in the rough is longer, this means you must be stronger to get the right club speed to get the ball out. The sand traps are placed in harder spots, and are deeper, once again wrist strength and club speed eliminate most women. I have no problem with a woman competing as long as she is as good as the men. What I do not want is a woman to compete who is not as good as the men, and then for the media to act like she is as good or better than the men.
Ced 0 Report post Posted April 2, 2004 I'd like to point out, for the sheer hell of it, that the two previous McDonald's HS Slam Dunk Contest winners were Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James. Also for the record, Parker blew a fast break dunk attempt during the women's All-American game, not getting enough height and catching the front of the rim.
