Damaramu 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2004 So who here likes Westerns? And what kind is your favorite? Who is your favorite Western actor? What is your favorite Western movie? Me personally I like Spaghetti Westerns. And I like The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. The last scene where they're all squaring off....gold. But I actually like John Wayne and his movies to. True Grit was a good one. However I don't like these new modern westerns. Ack. With the pretty boy cowboy, the modern slang, and the modern rock music for the score....ugh. That's not a western. It's a modern action movie with horses.
Guest OctoberBlood Report post Posted May 26, 2004 I am. The only "new" western I've watched and liked has been Open Range. I thought that was fantastic. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is not only one of the best Westerns (or the best), but one of the best movies ever. Atleast, IMO. I seriously need to pick up the DVD. I haven't watched it in a while, and I've heard the DVD is great as well. I really like "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", "Unforgiven", "Outlaw Josey Wales", and as I mentioned "Open Range". There are others of course. One I haven't seen and really want to is The Magnificent Seven.
Jingus 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2004 Westerns are cool, as long as I'm in the right mood for them. Pretty much anything starring John Wayne or Gary Cooper is usually worth watching. Dama's right, they just don't make good westerns like they used to; when Shanghai Noon is the best movie of the genre to come out in the past few years, that's pretty sad. nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2004 Yes and no. Does it star Clint Eastwood? Then yes. Does it star anyone else BUT Clint Eastwood? Then, no, I normally don't. And I don't count Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid as a western per-se ... but if I have to count it as one, then my Clint Eastwood rule is null and void. Oh come one, don't down Open Range down like that. It was a damn fine western, but I do think it was the best of its genre in a while. I have always been a fan of them honestly. But only really good ones. I can't take the bad ones. I watched The Red Headed Stranger the other night and goddamn...that was a bad movie. Although morgan Fairchilds nipples almost made up for it. Almost.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted May 26, 2004 If it stars Clint Eastwood and is directed by Sergio Leone, yes. I like the good modern westerns, but the Eastwood and Leone films are the only old ones I care about. I can't stand John Wayne Westerns and by all accounts it sounds like he was a cunt in real life, so fuck him. Did you know John Wayne was a Nazi?...well he was. Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2004 I like them ok, it's one of my lesser genres, but yeah. John Wayne's done some good stuff, The Searchers is good, Rio Bravo is good. The song they sang in Rio Bravo's been stuck in my head all day, it's funny there should be discussion about this. Eastwood, naturally, is great. All his stuff. Once Upon A Time In The West is a favorite of mine, even though it's somewhat overlong and overblown. That's part of what I like about it. And Bronson. He's always cool. {''({o..o})''} 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2004 The Man with No Name trilogy was my favorite when I was a kid. Infact, it wasn't until LOTR, that it's place was topled. It's a shame that it's a nearly dead genre. I still get goosebumps whenever I see how badass Eastwood was. I think I'm going to watch one of them tonight and see how well they hold up. Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted May 26, 2004 I can watch any western, and I like just about every one I've ever seen. Something about the atmosphere, the way the swaggering hero doesn't give a shit, everyone drinks and smokes, whores all over the place, and upbeat piano music set to gorgeous scenery. ArkhamGlobe 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2004 I love westerns, be it the classic Hawks or Ford westerns, spaghetti westerns or Peckinpah style revisionist westerns, I love it all (well, perhaps not ALL westerns per se, but you catch my drift). However, above all there are the westerns of Sergio Leone. A Fistful of Dollars is a bit rough around the edges but the rest are absolute gold. The thing I love about Leone is his amazing sense of style, everything from the over the top compositions to Morricone's scores, through which he elevates the films and their situations to a down right operatic level. It's a tightrope walk that could easily degenerate into crude selfparody but Leone always manages to keep the films in control. My favourite is Once Upon a Time in the West, which is not only my favourite western, but also one of my favourite films period. And as an aside, one might also include the samurai movies of Akira Kurosawa, which are basically transposed westerns in many ways.
Guest Cerebus Report post Posted May 27, 2004 I love westerns and spaghetti westerns are hands down my favorite. It's good to see a mini-revival (see Kill Bill and the Red Dead Revolver video game) but far too people have had their heart pumping while watching the duel at the end of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. It would be great to see a remake of GBU or Once Upon a Time in the West but in a different setting, like Big Mecha anime or Cyberpunk.
Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted May 27, 2004 GBU was sort of a remake itself, you know, or a sequel to a remake.

Guest Cerebus Report post Posted May 27, 2004 Though I liked Once Upon A Time In Mexico it really had nothing to do with Once Upon A Time in the West except for the title.
Ravenbomb 0 Report post Posted May 27, 2004 OUATIM wasn't supposed to have anything to do with OUATITW, it was a sequil to El Mariachi and Desperado. I like the Leone westerns (OUaT in the West, Man With No Name trilogy) Tombstone and The Wild Bunch. John Wayne sucks EDIT: And High Plains Drifter
Guest Coffey Report post Posted May 27, 2004 I don't know if it can get any better than Tombstone. I'm a big fan of all the Clint Eastwood movies too. Specifically Pale Rider.
Cheex Incarnate 0 Report post Posted May 27, 2004 Whoever thinks John Wayne sucks has no idea what they're talking about. The Cowboys, Rio Bravo, El Dorado, True Grit, and How the West Was Won are some of the greatest movies ever made. Period That said, I do prefer Spaghetti Westerns to the classic formula. The Man With No Name Trilogy is just the tip of the iceberg in this genre, though. Django, The Great Silence, El Companero, If You Live...Shoot! are all great spaghetti westerns too. Leone, Corbucci, and John Ford are true masters of cinema. If you ask me the best western ever is Once Upon a Time in the West. The best one to come out in recent years is Open Range (the only problem I have if it is that its a tad long, and the credits are in cursive....cursive?! in a western!) -Cheex
Guest JumpinJackFlash Report post Posted May 27, 2004 Western is my favorite genre, and is what makes America great. My 3 favorite westerns are: The Wild Bunch The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Once Upon a Time in the West And I like The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. The last scene where they're all squaring off....gold. I must say, after Eastwood fires the cannons, it is the best movie ever. That final 20 minutes were the best in movie history. OldSchoolWrestling 0 Report post Posted May 27, 2004 Does Tombstone and Deadwood count? This was going to be my response. razazteca 0 Report post Posted May 27, 2004 Last Man Standing was a western set in the early 1900s with gangsters instead of cowboys. It was basically a remake of a Clint Eastwood movie which was a remake of a Kurasawa movie.

cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted May 27, 2004 I think I'm the only one here who isn't that into spaghetti westerns. I just have never cared for the closeups of the eyes and gunfights that last 10 friggin minutes. It's just not realistic to me, and the pace is just soooo slow. Besides, dubbing in a western? Bleh. As far as modern stuff goes, I'll take Unforgiven, Tombstone, and Open Range. Open Range was damn near a **** movie aside from the tedious last 10 mins. with Costner and Bening that drag it down maybe 1/2 a star. Old school stuff? Gotta go with anything Wayne did from roughly Red River through Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. While he won the oscar for True Grit I don't really think it's one of his best movies. Randolph Scott also had some cool movies, Ride the High Country being his best movie (though more due to Joel McCrea than him). Also check out stuff like Coroner Creek, and anything he did for Budd Boetticher aside from the wretched Decision at Sundown.
