King Kamala 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 My dad was talking about missing the opportunity to go to Black Sabbath on one of their first US tours and he said the opener was Mungo Jerry(One hit wonder. Did In The Summertime). That strikes me as very odd. Jackyl as the lone hairband at Woodstock 94 is very weird. I was reading the names of the acts, Metallica, Green Day, Primus, NIN, Jackyl....Jackyl!? Jackyl seems much more like a band that would be at Woodstock 89 then 94 (Man imagine how bad a Woodstock 89 would have been). The Hives were talking about opening up for Metallica and Slipknot at a festival in Europe. I can imagine all the mullet heads saying a spontaneous "What the hell is this pussy shit?" The Hives said they went over well and then those guys do joke a lot. Of course there's the famous The Monkees and Jimi Hendrix bills. But if anybody has watched Head (And I'm sure almost none of you have) then you probably wouldn't be too shocked. So what bands on concert bills, made you scratch your head and say "Why the fuck are they there?"

snuffbox 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 At the turn of this millenium ICP used to regularly throw nu-metal bands on their tours....and it always resulted in Juggalo revolt chaos.
B. Brian Brunzell 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 At OzzFest '98, Incubus and The Melvins seemed a bit out of place.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted July 21, 2004 Incubus played one of the worst sets I've ever seen that year. I remember it well. Brandon Boyd looked totally confused by the big lifeless crowd, and his bending over and hand drumming excited a few girls, but that was it. They totally choked under the lights. They looked much more comfortable a couple years later, but I still can't stand Incubus.
Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 A friend of mine saw Rufus Wainwright and the Roots play on the same bill. This wasn't some festival, either; those were the only two acts that night.

DCMaximo 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 Funeral For A Friend (Welsh emo-core band) supported by both The Haunted (Swedish thrash metal) and OneLineDrawing (solo acoustic niceness) was pretty strange Rachel Stamp (androgynous glam-rock loved by 14 yr old goth girls) supported by Grand Theft Auto (dreadful Oasis-esque indie)

TheBigSwigg 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 I'm a Deftones fan, and I HATE 311. EDIT: Not to mention that the 311 fans enjoyed hearing talented music instead of neo-reggae bullshit.

King Kamala 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 Oh about the Black Sabbath/Mungo Jerry bill I mentioned in the first post. I knew their was a third band that made the bill even weirder and I asked my dad who it was and it was the immortal Badfinger. Badfinger for you young 'uns (Or people who haven't seen the Behind the Music episode) were hyped to be the next Beatles in the early 70's. Needless, to say they flamed out after a handful of hits (They did Come And Get It, No Matter What, and a cover of Nillson's I Can't Live If Living Is Without You). What a weird bill, Mungo Jerry followed by Black Sabbath followed by Badfinger. Is it just me or does the whole Linkin Park/Korn/Snoop Dogg/The Used/Less Than Jake bill sound weird. You got two faux punk band, two faux metal bands and Snoop Dogg for shits and giggles.
Corey_Lazarus 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 Boston pop/punk band Dirty Water opening for The Misfits in '02. Seriously. What the FUCK?! First band was Chaos, a decent BHC band. Then there was The A-Team (I think that their name), a kickass BHC band. And then...Dirty Water. Fuck you. When I saw Megadeth in '00, Boiler Room (generic whiny nu-metal) and Staind opened. They all got boo'd the fuck away. The Megadeth fans weren't having it. At the H82K2 tour (Slayer and Soulfly headlining), the band downthesun opened. Nobody could understand anything because the bass was turned up way too high, but they had two vocalists, and I'd imagine they sound like post-Felons Dope (ie. generic nu-metal that blows ass, as Dope's first album was fucking great for a nu-metal band). Limp Bizkit, Deftones, Mudvayne, and Linkin Park for Metallica. Yeah, it makes sense because Metallica became a soulless radio rock band, but seriously. It's well-known that Metallica primarily plays the old thrashy stuff live, since that's what the people come to hear. So...why the fuck would a bunch of thrash fans want to hear LINKIN PARK and LIMP BIZKIT?! Bizkit was decent live, because they seemed to genuinely enjoy themselves up there, but Fred was getting shit on by EVERYBODY. Between songs, they got shit thrown on stage. Fuckers. King Kamala 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 Got another one I forgot to mention a whiny female singer/songwriter (IE Jewel ripoff) opening up for Weird Al. Man it must suck to get heckled by 1000 eight year olds.
Skywarp! 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 Deftones for 311 I'd wager these bands have many of the same fans. There's a good cross-section that do. I'm a 311 fan that hates the Deftones, however. I was force-fed that White Pony album almost every day when I worked at a record store 4 years ago and I found it tedious. Another strange 311 bill was the "Sprite Liquid Mix Tour", where they were followed by headliner Jay-Z. Some other weird mixes of rock and hip-hop were on that bill, as well. King Kamala 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 Forgot another one Smashing Pumpkins opening up for KISS at Dodger Stadium during KISS' first comeback tour. Also during the same tour I think Pantera opened for KISS. When my dad saw KISS during the Dynasty tour (Dynasty was the album where KISS went "disco") and he said the opening act was New England (A Boston ripoff down to the name). The fact that New England sucked horribly, made KISS seem 10x better then they already were.

Red Baron 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 Metallica opening for Van Halen Metallica and Phil Collins
King Kamala 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 Metallica and Phil Collins I was going to mention that. But that seems really suspicious to me, the first time I heard it was from a Metallica hater. Maybe it happened, to piss off the metal heads I'll say I'd rather see Phil Collins. *Runs away singing Su-Su Sudio*
Guest PlatinumBoy Report post Posted July 21, 2004 Snoop Dogg opening for Red Hot Chili Peppers. NERD "opening" for Hoobastank--it was a free concert, but so many dumb rednecks just chanted HOOBASTANK, HOOBASTANK at NERD the whole time--I found a good way to rile them up was to chant Incubus back at them (the rednecks, not NERD) The Donnas and Busta Rhymes......
