Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted September 17, 2004 I've been listening to their s/t debut and Too Much Too Soon a shitload lately. Let's talk about how great they were, how they made the Rolling Stones look like a bunch of prim and proper pussy-assed schoolboys and how anyone who doesn't think they simply fucking rock more than most every other band that ever existed under the pretense of "rocking" are so terribly wrong. AboveAverage484 0 Report post Posted September 17, 2004 I've tried to pimp before but people hate on 'em. They do definitely rock. "Personality Crisis" is kickass. So is "Trash."
Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted September 17, 2004 People who hate the New York Dolls should probably stop having opinions on music. They're clearly in no position to judge what's, ya know, good. By the way, the recent "reunion" this band did is a big fucking joke, seeing as how over half the original members are dead. However, that does not take away from the fact that their two studio albums are great fucking rock records.
AboveAverage484 0 Report post Posted September 17, 2004 Here's evidence, these fuckers probably never even actually heard the NYD's. http://forums.thesmartmarks.com/index.php?...=new+york+dolls LooseCannon, Doomsault, Youth N Asia, and redbaron51 can all suck it. And I like redbaron51 and Doomsault is my brother, hahah.

Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted September 17, 2004 My heart has just been broken. LooseCannon—who, no fucking joke, is one of my all time favorite boarders—said the Dolls "sucked." What a piece of shit. I hate him now.

Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Report post Posted September 17, 2004 They were a lot less "punk" than they've been billed as, but those fuckers were more arrogant and brash than anyone else. It makes a motherfucker wanna strut...not dance...but strut. And fuck a dirty prostitute after sharing an infected needle together.

Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Report post Posted September 17, 2004 They dressed up as women, right? And they fucked women...man, thats punk rock.
River City Rocker 0 Report post Posted September 17, 2004 They dressed up as women, right? Johnny Thunders didn't! There's a quote in the book Please Kill Me about how Thunders refused to dress in drag onstage. Still, they're such a great band. -Ben
5_moves_of_doom 0 Report post Posted September 17, 2004 I don't listen to them too regularly, but they pretty much do what they do in their style better than anyone else out there. Loads of fun for the car and with friends and whatnot, but I would rarely just want to sit down in my room alone and listen them. Definitely a band that's best served by specific environments. It should be noted that they're really the only band that I've ever heard of Morrissey liking. Oh, and early Roxy Music.
DCMaximo 0 Report post Posted September 17, 2004 Didn't David Johansen totally piss away his credibility by doing a cover of "Hot Hot Hot" in the mid 80's? And why did he appear in a Hulk Hogan movie? But yeah, buying the s/t as a 14 year old (bought because "apparently they sound like the Backyard Babies", a ludicrous chain of thought) was a real eye-opener, there's a real brash swagger about their music that really excited me and still sounds great now. "Vietnamese Baby" is the song I always put on comp tapes for people, even if they really don't want it.
PLAGIARISM! 0 Report post Posted September 17, 2004 They ruled. And on a Morrissey live dvd of a show from about '91-92 he covered 'Trash' and it was far from the disaster it should have been. I'll probably have to suffer some grotesque version of them supporting him in december too, but it'll be a laugh.
River City Rocker 0 Report post Posted September 17, 2004 Didn't David Johansen totally piss away his credibility by doing a cover of "Hot Hot Hot" in the mid 80's? And why did he appear in a Hulk Hogan movie? He did reinvent himself as Buster Poindexter in the 1980s, and I'm still not sure why. Maybe he wasn't afraid to be laughed at or criticized by serious music fans? Whatever, though. Lately, he's been on a big blues kick. He also portrayed Eli Zabitz during one season of OZ, too, so it isn't like he was picking completely crummy roles in the movies and TV shows he appeared in. -Ben

jimmy no nose 0 Report post Posted September 17, 2004 I'm a big fan of the Dolls as well as the solo material from Johnny Thunders. Has anyone had a chance to see this new New York Dolls that are touring now? The guitarist filling in for Thunders was originally Izzy Stradlin of GNR, then it was Andy McCoy from Hanoi Rocks, but they both quit before they played. I'm not sure who's playing now. However, that does not take away from the fact that their two studio albums are great fucking rock records. I've seen the "reunion dolls" three times this summer, including Killer Kane's last gig, and they are excellent. Obviously it's not the real Dolls, but for Johansen and Slyvain + others it's a helluva lot better than it should be.

Kinetic 0 Report post Posted September 19, 2004 For those interested, the girl group song referenced at the beginning of "Looking For A Kiss" is "Give Him A Great Big Kiss" by the Shangri-Las. It's quite good. Yeah, and both New York Dolls studio albums are excellent. The Dolls section of Please Kill Me is terrific, as is that in the lesser-known Glam.
