Why is Gene Snitsky so over?

Recommended Posts

Guest CronoT

It's something of a modern day miracle for a no-name "jobber" to suddenly find himself in such a high profile position. The last wrestler who really did this was Steve Austin, when he defeated Jake "The Snake" Roberts at the "King of the Ring" PPV about 10 years or so ago. That was when he coined the phrase "Austin 3:16." We all saw how fast and heavy that took off.

So, what are you ideas? Also, let's not stat flaming and get this thread closed, okay? we can all be/act like adults here.

I wouldn't have called Austin a no name jobber when he did that. He had been around since January, competed on a few PPVs and some people still knew him from WCW.

Snitsky surprises me because it seems no one heard about him. It looked like he was going to be some local indy squah guy and ended up in a high-profile feud. As much as I don't like an abortion angle, I just think it is cool because it is so rare to have surprises and guys coming from no where these days.

Snitsky is not over like Austin. Austin was looked at as a cutting edge character, who connected with fans like no one ever before. Also, he had the ability to cut great promos, exuded personality and believability, was something different from the norm. Add in his ability to have great matches, which both told a story and added to his character, as well as great feuds with Bret, DX, McMahon, Foley, Rock and the Undertaker. Also, Austin was born during the begining of the wrestling boom, the monday night wars, where main event matches and huge production shows, weekly, were something new which attracted new fans. These new fans loved the competition and what it inspired in the shows. Rules were broken which had previously been thought were a death knell on the business....(Main event matches, NWO acknowleging the competiton, cruisers and workrate dramatically changing on a national scale, the basic end of squash matches etc...)

Snitsky is preceived as a joke of a performer where the audience mocked his character and the angle by calling him baby killer. The WWE has ran with it, seeing there is no way the audience will buy the angle as a serious one. Snitsky has shown no promo ability, has not shown he can connect with the audience on an emotional level, has goofy facial expressions, has shown no workrate to enhance his character and has not been a ratings draw. Right now the audience thinks they are mocking the stupid angle, as soon as the moron fans realize they are being played they will get tired of the angle and Snitsky will be in OVW or in the lower mid-card.

Edit: Also, people were clamoring for Austin to be elevated at the time. He already showed his charisma and promo ability in ECW, had the right look, had a presence in the ring and had been a major break out star in WCW. If his scheduled feud with Flair had gone down lord only knows where the business would be now, and where WCW and WWF/E would stand.

He looks like the love child of Sarge and Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart. Two true legends of the squared circle. If that isn't reason enough, I don't know what is.

Or, alternatively, the crowd had been souring towards the whole Lita/Kane angle and Lita especially (slut chants and the like), and it was Snitsky who injured Lita and ruined Kane's life. Now they've put a unique twist on it, made Snitsky the heel and it's something different. And quite unexpected. Oh, and he has a ready made catchphrase, which helps.

Ummm...... wtf? Austin was a solid mid to upper card guy in WCW and had been fairly well known when he entered the WWF.

I think the only reasons for his current interest is that he looks like a goof ball and he's new. Once we get used to him I think he's going to be pretty boring pretty quick. I don't think he has much in the line of mike skills or charisma to make him consistantly interesting. I don't now what he brings to the table as far as actual wrestling talents but from what i've seen so far I am not impressed.

It's not every day you see someone in the "jobber" role, stand up and take a spot on the RAW card. When he did this, it sent some shockwaves, that's for sure. I'm not sure why he's so over... but who cares! PimpDaddySarp is right... it's all about the name.

While I know you guys don't care about his opinion and neither do I, this is Scott Keith's take on it and it's an interesting way of looking at it.

While I'm thinking of it, the thing that REALLY bugs me is what they're doing with Gene Snitsky. Not because it's a great injustice to him or the angle is insulting or whatever, but because they're about to create a BIG star out of a completely undeserving idiot. They've been trying for MONTHS to find the next big thing using all their manufactured and recycled ideas, and they're getting this dude over by ACCIDENT. Why?

1) He looks different than the roster, thus giving the fans something to identify outside of the usual generic bodybuilder look.

2) He has a catchphrase that's both easy to remember and can be used outside of the arena without sounding like a dork.

3) He was actually booked to do something MEANINGFUL (ie, kill Kane's baby) and thus does not have the stigma of being a loser attached to him, like everyone else on the roster.

In short, while trying to find a two-bit fall guy for the stupid pregnancy angle, they have now stumbled ass-backwards into a potential money-drawing heel, who the fans have actually shown interest in, and they're going to completely squash him at the PPV and thus kill off the character dead. They might surprise me yet on this one, but I doubt it.

I saw that yesterday. He made some good points there, but I think the WWE is actually gonna be smart for this one. They realize they have hit on something with Gene, and they don't have him get squashed by Kane. They have a longer feud that leads up to Survivor Series or Armageddon where we see some sort of blow-off match. That is where Gene gets murderalized.

You give the WWF way too much credit. This is the company that's cut off everyone at the knees who's managed to get over the last few years.

Eddie Guerrero and John Cena are perfect examples where they totally missed the boat on someone.

But..but...Snitsky is a HOSS and Eddie and Cena are not. Eddie I will agree that they've screwed him over, but Cena really isn't a real talented wrestler to begin with. Cena was over mainly due to his rap gimmick, which doesn't play well as well as a face.

There's an Ed Wood quality about Snitsky that makes him fascinating. See, compare Bela Lugosi's stuff he did for Ed Wood to the bleh Monogram movies he did in the 40s. Tyson Tomko and a bunch of these OVW hoss guys are the equivalent of Monogram: bland, uninteresting, somewhat bad but not bad enough to be entertaining. Snitsky is like Bride of the Monster or Plan 9 From Outer Space...he's so hilariously untalented and campy on the mic that he becomes perversely entertaining.

The 'Gene Snitsky' name sounds so phony bologna (I really don't know if it's his real name or not).

I can imagine whomever wrote the wwe.com piece about him probably had to ask around to find out how to spell Snitsky. Was it Snitsky? Shnitsky? Snitchky? Snishky? Schnitsky?

Actually when I first heard his name I though it was Sinisky, like some sort of take off of Gene Kiniski.

But I guess it really isn't his fault his name is so marketable.

Because he is our savior, that's why

Actually, I think it's because 1.) his catch phrase is cool, and 2.) He's involved in an angle so sleezy, it's enjoyable

I compare it to the song "Ice, Ice Baby". In the year 2004, I have not gone into a bar where, if available, I play that song at least once. And you know what, people go nuts. Everybody is "rapping" along, and making fun of it. It has an air of freshness to it through respectful badness. The song is some sort of illogical icon of the early 90s now.

Snitsky is the "best" part of this "awesome" angle. The facts about this great storyline.

*Lita is a slut who f***** Kane to save Matt(way to build Matt up there, hon)

*Lita got pregnant from said action by Kane(so...umm...she is supposed to get sympathy how?)

*They get married(WWE weddings...a great example why the only marriage amendment in the constitution should be against fake bad marriage angles in wrestling)

Now by this point, I was angry. I was fed up. This angle was not entertaining at all. Then, we get this guy I'd never heard of, hitting Kane with a chair. Setting up a miscariage. Remember what Cornette said about these kind of angles? THEY ARE CRAP. And insulting crap at that. I was more insulted by this than the damn necrophilia angle.

But...out of this bad, insulting, pointless illogical crap that takes up at least 10-20% of every freakin' RAW in the last few months...comes a catchphrase....

"It's not my fault."

Perfect. All of the sudden, this horrible angle, had a centerpoint. This Snitsky guy was sent to do a job (Break of kayfabe there?), and it ISN'T HIS FAULT!!!

This horrible angle has now become as much of a joke as Ice Ice Baby. But, remember, this won't draw fans at all. It just entertains a select few of us who appreciate how bad this really is. And, it's not Snitsky's fault. At all.

Besides, I cannot wait for the SNITSKY 913 SAYS "I JUST KILLED YOUR BABY" t-shirts.

You can tell they didn't expect this by the jobber name they gave him. There's NO WAY that ti could EVER be marketable.

And he won the first FULL match I saw with him with a sideslam. Even the ref looked confused before counting the three.

The Rock Bottom is really little more than a modified sideslam. The facial expressions he made Monday night were priceless. I guess this really is the perfect example of something being so horribly awful that it's good.

I don't know about anyone else, but I was laughing my ass off when he brought that baby carriage to the ring Monday night.

So you mean to tell me that Scott Keith contradicted himself in his latest babble? Wow, shocking new ground!!!!!!!

Snitsky's got a short-term window--like Eugene had--and if it goes beyond that, it'll depend on what happens as far as character growth. (Save yourself the hassle of coming after me with BUT HHH KILLED EUGENE! 1)That gave Eugene two more months of being useful and 2)Who the fuck are you gonna feud him with, Kane, La Resistance, Coach?)

Gene Skitsky reminds me of a young Sid Vicious.

He's a big, raw, power guy. He has generic, yet imposing theme music. He has a sadistic, crazy look. And he handles himself well against other hosses.

I think he's gonna be huge.

You mean you believed HONKEY TONK MAN about that?

Well, Kane did get his start in Memphis.

And it's not like WADE KELLER reported it.

That may be true, and the Eugene character may have died out under it's own weight, but Triple H certainly did a lot to speed it up.

If Gene Snitsky gets over, I won't be surprised if Triple H uses his heat vacuum on him.
