Mentally ill family member of Hitler's was gassed

VIENNA, Austria -- One of the thousands of victims of the Nazi regime's program to kill mentally ill people was a relative of Adolf Hitler, two historians said Tuesday.

 

The woman, identified only as Aloisia V., was 49 when she was gassed on Dec. 6, 1940, at an institution in the Hartheim castle near the northern Austrian city of Linz, historian Timothy Ryback said.

 

Ryback, an American historian who heads the Obersalzberg Institute in Berchtesgaden, Germany, said the details surrounding the woman's death surfaced last week after Obersalzberg archivist Florian Beierl gained access to her medical file at a Vienna medical institution where she had been treated.

 

An ink stamp on the file serves as ''proof of extermination,'' Ryback said.

 

''It's painful to see what this woman went through,'' he said in a telephone interview from Salzburg. ''It highlights the cruelty and brutality of that system to an excruciating degree.''

 

That mental illness flourished in Hitler's extended family is nothing new -- a secret 1944 Gestapo report that has been known for decades described Aloisia's line of the family as ''idiotic progeny,'' Beierl said.

 

Raises questions about dictator

 

 

 

Wolfgang Eisenmenger, a German expert, warned against drawing any conclusions about Hitler's own mental health.

 

''An expert on hereditary psychological illnesses could perhaps draw some conclusions from the results of the reconstructed family tree,'' Eisenmenger said in a statement.

 

Regardless of any such conclusions, the findings so far are intriguing, Ryback said.

 

''Given the basis of the Nazi ideology and Hitler's own world view, the very notion that congenital insanity exists in a paternal line in Hitler's family itself is interesting, to say the least,'' he said.

 

It's unclear whether Hitler was aware of his relative's fate, Ryback said. AP

Was Hitler really that evil?

I mean every time someone comes to an argument about Hitler and the war it focuses merely on his negatives not everyone elses.

Now in my opinion this guy was almost a second coming of Jesus to the German people, he was a great talker, he would not have had the country behind him if he wasn't, and he knew exactly what they wanted to hear.

Now the Germans had been treated by all accounts very unfairly after the first world war and their economy had completely collapsed, they were in a depression unlike any we are ever likely to see, and this guy comes along and tells them it's not their fault blame it on someone who also can share the blame. The Germans like any country would embrace this man with open arms and blame others.

Now ok he had some extreme views on the perfect race, but what people forget is that in that day his views really weren't that uncommon, his refusal to give the gold medal to Jesse Owens being a prime example of his views on a master race, yet in reality was a racial view of african americans being inferior to other people really that extreme?

You may say that it is not but in this day and age we still have the Ku Klux Klan and in the United Kingdom we have the British National Party and a very heavy underlying racial problem which was highlighted in a documentary shown a while ago about the police force. Or you could turn to the recent coverage of the football where racial chants were hurled at black players in the England vs Spain match or the Real Madrid vs Bayer Leverkusen match. Ok it will never go to the extremes that Hitler went of taking something of these people but the thought is still there.

I am not trying to say that Hitler was a good man, I am not even trying to say he was not bad I am merely trying to get people to look at this from more than one angle.

I don't usually visit this folder, but I have to say this is the stupidest thing I have ever read.
