Why I can't go to lunch right now

does Atlanta have anything like the Grandview Triangle?

This project, in its more primitive form, went by the unholy name of the "Grandview Triangle." For the record, the intersection of I-470, I-435 and U.S. Highway 71, plus seven local routes, comprise the basic interchanges. With the possible exception of the Bermuda Triangle, this may have been North America's least loved triangle. Indeed, not since Eddie Fisher abandoned Debbie Reynolds for Liz Taylor has any triangle gotten so much bad publicity. The Grandview Triangle reaped such bad press for a good reason: it performed a vital function poorly, so poorly in fact that it allowed neighboring Kansas to prosper at Missouri's expense.

The Grandview Triangle in Kansas City, Mo., has one of the fastest-growing rush hour traffic rates in the country. A confluence of three major highways - two interstates (I-435 and I-470) and a major highway from the south (U.S. 71) - the Triangle is arguably one of the city's most congested interchanges. It also has the second highest accident rate in the state.

In the early 1960s, when the Triangle was built, the area was hardly more than a wide spot in the middle of U.S. 71. But new interstates built to provide access to the burgeoning suburban area 20 miles south of Kansas City, a regional mall, numerous businesses, office parks and sports facilities all put pressure on the interchange. Each day, close to 250,000 vehicles pass through the Triangle, which was designed to accommmodate 170,000 vehicles a day.

Additionally, the Triangle was plagued by structural complexities that made navigation a challenge for everyday commuters. Unlike most interchanges that are composed of 12 movements (exits, entrances and through traffic), the Triangle has 64 movements. And, while most interchanges are spaced at least a mile apart, the Triangle has more than four interchanges (including a slip ramp) within a mile.

The Missouri DOT (MoDOT) knew something had to be done. Working with locally based HNTB, it planned to reconfigure the Triangle, adding multiple lanes and widening or replacing 26 bridges. When complete, the $200 million project would double the Triangle's capacity.

(..)

Steve Porter, senior public affairs specialist for MoDOT, says the Triangle presented not just logistical but "highway logic" problems. Several exits, for example, were located on the left-hand side of the highway, lanes traditionally reserved for high-speed traffic. In addition, the westbound lanes of I-470 now cross U.S. 71 twice. (The redesign will take I-470 over the highway only once.)

Imagine what Atlanta could do with a triangle where you could go south/west on 435, or south onto 71 or south towards 470, or north on 71

So he just gave up, huh? Should have just blew his brains out, because he's going to end up dead in a bit anyway. It would have saved the good people of Georgia some tax money keeping this shitbag locked up, at any rate.

Killing three federal agents (I don't know if a court reporter counts as one as well) and attempting to kill another? You can't be any more fucked.

Regarding traffic. In the Cincy area, I-75, I-71 and I-275 were real nightmares during rush hour, but not as bad as the other places mentioned I'm sure.

Pittsburgh just sucks. Parkways East and West are a joke -- only two lanes each way backed up for miles gives us the impression that a lot of people live here...

Good to see him caught. Just for the sake of starting a likely controversial argument around here (like we need more of those!) should female deputies presiding at the front of court rooms be reviewed? I mean, he overpowered the presumingly smaller deputy and probably judged in his mind (correctly) that he could take a woman. Or at least add other deputies for those presumed to be violent criminals, something needs to be looked at...

Killing a judge and/or a peace officer during any time in the history of the US has almost ALWAYS netted the offender the death penalty. I'd say this guy's fucked about 6,000,000 ways from Sunday.

Say hi to Hitler for us all, while he's getting his daily "pineapple suppository."

You are equating this dude... to Hitler?

I'm getting mighty tired of fools comparing people that haven't done really anything to reach Hitler's level. Give the man some props.

I wonder if Ripper ever did get to eat lunch

I was wondering the same thing.

In troubled times like these... courage.

And I think Crono was implying this guy was going to hell, not that this black guy was Hitler -- the only HITLER around these days occupies the White House and has us occupying formerly sovereign Middle East countries...

I was in a Church youth group where somebody mentioned the idea that 'maybe Hitler repented before he died'.. I didn't answer that with "wouldn't shooting yourself in the head end up sending you to hell?"

I know that we've used a few Hitler references the past month talking about the ten commandments and 9/11 sensativities, but in this thread it's really too far.

Time to start enforcing a variant of Godwin's Law . He who drags out Nazis or Hitler in a thread that isn't specifically about those subjects has lost the arguement.

I'm all for that.

And can we retroactively apply that to the recent remarks of the elder senator from West Virginia?

I think he was just inferring that Nichols will meet Hitler in Hell in the near future.

Ding ding ding! We have a genius here!

The important thing to mention here is that I was eventually able to get something to eat and get home at a decent time. You can all rest easy now.

Toasted sub. Italian. It kicked all kinds of ass. My coke was watered down though. But I was able to deal with the tragedy.

Why did they arrest him?

Why didn't they yell, "HE'S GOT A GUN!" as they rushed in and shoot his unarmed ass? And if there were witnesses, say he shot them too.

Damn police, WHERE IS THE LOVE FOR THE JOB!?!?!

Blame Rodney King. This would be a good excuse for police brutality.

I wonder if the little old lady he overpowered asked if they could just get along.

None of you can match the hell of driving TO Charlotte, NC. Once you get in it's not that bad but I believe until about a year ago it was the only large city in America with two lane interstates going through the city.

TWO LANES!!!!

To be fair, so does Atlanta, because doing road work on 3 of the lanes at rush hour is the best plan EVER!!!!!

Detroit during the Super Bowl next yr= worst traffic ever

horrible roads+ insane traffic= lots of broken down vehicles on 75 and 94 and 96 ( as if the construction delays on the latter two now dont make the delays/detours long enough)
